I had the opposite problem when I was younger. My parents were both very clean people, nobody was allowed to wear shoes inside either. I went to some friend's houses and was so shocked when I realized that not everyone else had super clean houses. My dad even folded his dirty clothes before putting them in the laundry basket. I picked up on that though and now if there is any trash anywhere it bothers me and I still take off my shoes at the front door before entering.
