Maomao proved twice over in this episode if she wasn't already an excellent apothecary she could have had built herself quite a nice life in sales... not excluding running the Verdigris House herself.

I feel like instead of denying that Jinshi like her, Maomao just not interested into relationship. Never seen she really blushing or some sort of that, flustered? yes, but didnt seem like she's into that much, she just have more interest in apothecary and stuff, at least that's how I feel

Yes, high-tier courtesans are generally used for POLITICAL DIALOGUE and other cultured arts reasons, first & foremost (for example, one of the 3 princesses, Joka, specializes in scholars & political advice (makes sense, as she's kind of a misandrist).
