to get her the job philip implied gakyung is his mistress. When hideo says “why not work at your boyfriend’s office” and when she says “there are too many eyes in the office” shes playing into the lie that she’s philip’s mistress.

I think there was a little misunderstanding about Gakyung’s past! In an earlier episode, they showed the same scene of her being kicked out of the house, and in that scene she actually called that woman “auntie,” not “mom.” So I don’t think that was her mother. We don’t know if she was her actual aunt or just someone she was living with, but that’s how I interpreted it. And about the “filthy blood” comment, since I don’t think that was her mother calling her that, it seems like she was constantly mistreated and discriminated against throughout her life for being half-Japanese. So I think that phrase comes more from the way other people treated her and made her feel about her identity, rather than her mother rejecting her for being Japanese. At least that’s my interpretation so far!

So far, so good. I think this show has all the potential to be the Kdrama of the year. Of course, we’ve often seen dramas start off strong only to fall apart in the second half. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen here, because it would be a real shame. These first three episodes have been incredible.

So Shinichi adopted Hideo partly because of the policy of Naisen Ittai (“Japan and Korea as One Body”), which promoted the assimilation of Koreans into Japanese society, and partly because high ranking officials in the Government General of Korea operated in a climate of resistance and political violence. He may have needed someone close to him whom he could trust for protection.
