I hope your Christmas was amazing. I spent quite a bit of mine getting this video over the finish line so I hope you can enjoy it at some point!  I understand that it's long, but I felt like this video NEEDED to be made. The Saturn V, explained from someone who helped build it.

Luke Talley is an amazing person, and I was honored to be able to meet him at the US Space and Rocket Center early one morning to hear the story straight form the horses mouth.

Thank you so much for supporting on Patreon.  I spent Christmas finishing this video up, hoping it would be ready this morning.  I'm trying to avoid making the overly-sensational content that the algorithm demands.  Thanks for enabling me to make the content I think will truly make the world better.

Regards,

Destin

As a former SpaceX Merlin MVac propulsion technician it was really fascinating to be able to compare how far we have come in all these years, and how much talent and hard word went into the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs… Thanks Destin!

Robert Thompson

Video stability note: Please don't shake the pictures you are holding in your hand that you want us to look at. X-)

Leroy Johnson

This was one of my absolute favorite videos, just the depth of knowledge, the coolness and thoughtfulness of the technology, everything. Well done.

Luke Hileman

Take a nice new years with your family.

Ethan Horvath

Same dude, looks like such a good video

J Liddle

I wonder how much more processing power it took to make this video than to send that sucker to the moon...

Will McKelvey

Merry Christmas, Destin. Hope your family had a good one!

John Cox

Hey I met that guy. I arrived early at that building for ThinkerCon 2018 and there were very few people there, so we got to have an old engineer to new engineer nerd out for a while. Real cool guy.

Gavin Sullivan

I’m about to get on planes for 22 hours - is there any way I can download this via patreon??

Tim S Root

Thank you for sharing this. While I don't use my engineering degree, really, I know enough to be able to guess what it must have felt like to have been as the bleeding edge of technology

Edward Conway

To have someone who was inside this project, start to finish, walk us down the rocket and point out things that were so important the success was amazing. And he did it in plain English (he sounded like my Grampa from Ensley Alabama) but made it clear how it functioned and what it did to make the mission go forward. Thank you so much, Ed

Rob Holcomb

Luke is amazing, a mind like a bear trap for facts and figures. I can only hope I'm that lucid after I retire.

Steve Kurt

For an hour long video, it went by fast and left me wanting more! Thanks to Luke and Kitty for being part of the Apollo team, and thanks to Destin for the interview and editing! When I worked at McDonnell Douglas in the 90's, I worked with guys who had helped develop the Mercury and Gemini capsules. It was fun to have that connection with those early programs!

Anthony May

this was amazing, thanks Destin!

Rick Beethe

Just watched the long video on YouTube. Is there a reason there was no mention of the problems that occurred on Apollo 13? It would be interesting to hear Mr. Talley's take on these problems, the depiction by Hollywood, what the astronauts went through, the work done on the ground to solve problems.

Mark Jacobs

Wow! Just… Wow! I think that was one of the most educational and entertaining videos I have ever seen. Thank you, Mr. Talley! And, thank you, Destin!!! 👍🏼😁

iliketodrawdinosaurs

This is random but I was LOVING my Canary box cutter yesterday. I had a mountain of cardboard from Christmas present deliveries and it made short safe work of them. Thanks for recommending it! Merry Christmas

Jay Mweller

Happy Holidays, Destin. 🎄

Jay Mweller

If you pay for YT, you can download videos there. I watched the entire Navy Sub Deep Dive on my trip to Australia from California.

Gavin Sullivan

Thanks I might do that - but I have paid already as a patreon supporter… I’m assuming beyond Destin’s control though.

Mark Jacobs

I do have a question. I saw the Saturn V horizontal display in Houston. I noticed the the vertical fins on stage one had, what appeared to be, movable trailing edge surfaces, IE: elevators, ailerons. I’m guessing the ICU controlled them in conjunction with engine gimbaling (?). Could you shed a little light on this, please? Thank you!

Ragan

I just finished watching the long cut and it is great. Thanks for sharing it with us!

Mike O'Dell

Thank you so much for capturing this while you still could. The contributions of the space program and all the people who brought their talent and dedication what became the the most fruitful period of invention in the history of man up to that point. Their “awe shucks” humility has made it easy for people to completely fail to understand what miracles all those people created and how much of today’s world is still owed to them, and will always be.

Tim Thayer

Really enjoyed this one. THANK YOU!

George Burgyan

I just went there a couple months ago. This was some great added color from an amazing engineer! Thanks!

Michael Hahn

This was great Destin. I need to get to Huntsville one day soon, since SaturnV is my handle 🚀 It'd be ashame not to visit my namesake.

John Lin

Thank you Destin for making the world a better place with your videos!

PA Nilsson SM3TTZ

Merry Christmas Destin & family. Thanks for quality content!

Kevin

Thank you for your amazing work Destin. Can I skip the main channel entirely and start with the second channel or would I miss something important?

Steve Jones

As always, such a cool video. Such an awesome person to interview. I REALLY need to get to Huntsville to check out the facility there... Maybe it will be a stop on our eclipse trip next year!!

Michael Bagnasco

Stellar video as always. I found myself smiling hard and didn't even realize a whole hour went by! I'll be watching the longer video this afternoon. Thank you, Destin!

Emil Janesten

Will the longer video contain the same stuff as the shorter, and then some more? So I watch the right one without watching it twice. 😅

Nathan Hazard

Fascinating video as always! Wise words from Luke Talley, nothing like that first hand experience. I was able to watch the whole video with my father as well, he got a kick out of it! Would love to visit Huntsville someday. Merry Christmas!

Tony Fantozzi

Absolutely fabulous video. Thank you and Luke for the time and energy it took to make it!

Nashguy207

Thanks for sharing this. Luke seems like a great guy. I am so sorry to hear about his lose. I love Huntsville I spent a lot of time there on business and pleasure back in the 80's through about 2007. I used to race remote controlled boats and put on races for racing these boats at Brahan Spring Park. Also My father in law worked for a division of GM Delphi I think he was involved somehow in some of the early Nasa rocket launches and had to be a there at cape for some of the early launches. It was either with the Mercury or Gemini programs I don't remember and he has passed away.

Steven Foster

Please don't bend to " the overly-sensational content that the algorithm demands" I am ALWAYS fascinated by your videos and usually want them to be longer! I pass the videos on to my 2 sons and watch in fascination when my oldest Granddaughter watches them and then asks great questions about something you talk about or see her reaction to a fact or picture on the subject. I wouldn't want you to change a thing. Just keep doing more for as long as you can.

Brice McReynolds

I think its a statement of how important and awesome Smarter Every Day is (and other channels/creators like it) that I could understand a majority of what was being talked about and the things Luke was explaining made sense BECAUSE I watch Smarter Every Day. Talking about the slosh in Stage 2 made sense, because of NDQ I knew what hoop stress was, the "air/fuel ratio" with the injector plates, all brought to mind another SED video that had a bit of that concept in it. Talking about one of the greatest feats of modern engineering with one of the guys who made it seems like a long way from putting a camera on a chicken's head or flipping cats in slow motion but also its right there with it. I'm not traditional college educated, I did everything I could to take the easy math and science courses in high school, but dang it if you don't make these incredibly complicated and intricate concepts feel "gettable" for a trailer park kid from Kansas. Keep doing what you're doing Destin, its good.

Tim Higgs

Thank you for this amazing video! I learned so many things in this I stopped counting! LoL Thank you so much for posting the longer second channel video. I love alllllll the details of the content and listening to your guys conversation!

Gavin Sullivan

Just wanted to chip in with another thank you. My main YouTube fodder is rockets - I hadn’t realised that you had a bunch of Saturn V videos. So my weekend is well and truly made! Luke is absolutely wonderful to listen too.

Oshan Apte

Hey Destin, this is a great video. It really solidified my intention to support you on Patreon, so that you get to create more of these videos. As someone who edits YouTube videos, I know how much time needs to be spent on making these long videos. So I just wanted to chip in a lil bit.

2026-09-03 02:00 Destin, I respect you deeply and look up to you a *ton* - THANK YOU for what you do, and the immense respect you provide everyone in your videos (and presumably/hopefully your real life as well)! That is the decorum we should all strive for! I'm a senior electrical engineer at one of those big bay area companies you've heard of, and your videos are both super enjoyable to me, and truly enjoyable to "normies" my age (30s) who have no engineering background but are smart and curious and open minded - that is so beautiful my dude. I even moreso love sharing these videos with my younger cousins who are still in school, it ignites a spark in them and they are always asking side questions:) Thanks for helping to inspire a generation man, you and others like you, are to that generation, what "mythbusters" was to me, but with even more science and less (no?) establishment entertainment people dumbing things down. Merry Christmas, happy holidays, happy new year! Peace, Love, & Science <3 -Aldy

This is great. I smiled through the bit about Luke's career at IBM. My dad started with big blue when he was 16 in the late 60s and had a 40+ year career there, retiring as CTO -- it's amazing to consider the changes in technology over that time. You better bet he has some stories! Thanks for sharing your interview with this absolute expert, Destin.

Dustin Van Hofwegen

This is a great interview, thank you for making it and for letting Mr. Talley tell these stories. So fascinating!

Austin Burnham

I finally got to visit that museum a year ago. I stayed almost the entire day and my wife had to pull me out of there so we wouldn’t be late to something we had scheduled. This interview was so enjoyable to listen to! I learned to much. The Saturn V is an amazing engineering creation. I’m glad to support content like this. Destin, you’re coming up on a whole decade of being on Patreon. How time flies! I think it would be neat to have a livestream or something for those of us who have been supporting here since the beginning. Definitely no pressure, but I’ll throw the idea out in case you’re interested!

I got to visit the USSRC today and meet Luke. It wasn’t busy so he spent a good deal of time with me and my brother. I’m great full for people like him who continue to volunteer and pass a long their first hand stories of their experiences.
