Thank you again so much for supporting on Patreon.  This video is 100% supported by YOU!  I've filmed a lot of really interesting stuff about Fuel Injection, but I thought it would be good to start by exploring what the spray itself looks like.  I hope you enjoy it! Your support on Patreon allows me think carefully about whether or not its a good idea to work with certain sponsors.  I'm grateful for that opportunity.

The JWST Space Team stickers are shipping out by the way!  Expect them soon.

I had a lot of different options for thumbnails on this one.  I've attached a few that I thought you might enjoy!

Regards,

Destin

When I first saw the title I thought it was going be rocket engine fuel injectors, still cool though

Barry

Whoa, love it! Looking forward to more.

Simon-pierre Gagnon

Great vid Destin! Your face while testing the flaming injector was just priceless, I lost it haha! Man, I need those glasses.

T Mo

Interesting to see the pink to blueish pixels travel against the flow at around 14:40-

Nashguy207

Great video of the injectors firing. You do some awesome videos and teaching for sure!!

Mark Van Raam

We did this in diesel class with a ship sized injector in college. But the instructor used a lot rolled up newspaper and the fireball was about 5 feet in diameter. Truly impressive.

Adrian Horn

First video as a patron and this is awesome. Not because it's a topic I enjoy, I actually know nothing about engines. That's why I loved it. You made it interesting to someone who knows nothing about it.

John Nixon

I have been excited about the fuel injector episodes since the carb episode! Can’t wait to see the footage from holly for the aftermarket injector setups.

mymanevans

Love these slow motion captures - I used your carburetor video a few weeks ago to help explain combustion engines to my students. Videos like these are immensely helpful for helping the students understand the science (and immensely enjoyable for their teacher to watch)!

Marcin Bator

ahh, I thought the same thing. Maybe it's an idea for a next video. Visualizing different types of turbulent flows in different injector types, maybe with different color fluids?

Spicy110

I am really interested for the high speed of the EFI injectors!

RoadRunner

I think that the thing I love most about these videos is the pure, unadulterated joy that Destin shows when one of his experiments/projects/endeavors works out, whether as expected or with unexpected results. Every time he learns something new, a smile just lights up his face. That is incredibly infectious! Thanks, Destin! Please keep up the great work!

Jonathan Womack

I'm really curious to know what caused those pixels. I wonder if it was minute amounts of fuel travelling backwards getting combusted. I would have to defer to Destin to know exactly what's happening!

Travis Macie

The spray pattern for most injectors depends on the combustion chamber and piston design, especially for direct injection and even more so for diesel direct injectors. Most newer diesel engines use a piston that has a combustion chamber machined or forged into it rather than the head. With a combustion chamber that moves, the timing when the injector fires is very important! EFI port injectors work similarly but rather than overcoming a poppet valve, an electrical solenoid is what releases the fuel. This generally happens at much lower pressures than direct injection. Then there is the whole world of direct injection that is electronically controlled!!

Walter Harley

Re the point about the gradient of fuel/air mixture, you can really see this at about 14:41, where just as the fuel pressure is cut off the flame finally manages to "run backwards" to the start.

Lucas

I'm impressed that Destin was able to translate the idea of Upper/Lower Explosive Limits for fuels into an optimization problem with boundary conditions. Truly, a separate way of thinking.

Richard Tullos

Would that more people were as fascinated by the world around themselves as is Destin. Don't stop what you're doing, buddy.

Tor Park

Thanks so much for this video! Engineers are so ingenious!

Richard Wessels

I am sorry Destin I had lost faith and was wondering if you knew and were going to cover: compression ignition, spark Ignition, stoichiometry, And then you got to it at the end, faith restored. I would have preferred it to preface to injector examples.

MatteBush

Seriously though, I really need these safety glasses in my life. For Halloween at least...

Paul Edhlund

That was sublimely awesome! Thank you so much!

Hi Destin, have you ever noticed when opening a self sealed envelope you get a purple light (spark)?? It would be cool to see that in slow motion!! I have some thoughts on it that it’s not just static electricity.

Ricky Stoner

It's stuff like this where I love supporting you on patreon. My family and I love learning with you. Thank you

JackFrost

There are also throttle body injection systems which are kind of like a electronically controlled carburetor.

John Taylor

Wow Destin. Just when I think you can’t out do a subject video, you go and do it. This is a great one. Diesel engines are great.

James Cahill

Yes! It's something that we worry about in my line of work (maritime industry) as opening fuel tanks for maintenance or pressurised fuels leaks we can enter these conditions. It was cool to see it visually as its something we're taught theoretically in my line of work.

Matt Bramlage

I love that Destin clearly creates his own captions instead of letting YouTube auto-caption the videos. If you haven't gotten a feel for what this adds, I'd recommend looking for "Wheezing Nerd Delight" when he first activates the injector with the torch at 9:45.

ShadowTux

Awesome slow mo footage! Any change to see the full files/or full slowmo video from them like in Pecan harvest video? 😊

Michael Hahn

Destin, seen your carburetor and fuel injector vids both great. I'd like to see you do a video on the efficiency of both, with a twist. Preheat the fuel to nearly vaporise it to measure its efficiency over misting it. Will preheating fuel improve it's effectiveness once fired in an engine?

Paul Hirsch

Learning the theory in class, and then seeing the application with the fuel injector and carburetor is awesome! Keep these videos--and the joy you're having with them--coming!
