Future-proofing my addons with Manifest V3 upgrade :) (Patreon)

Good news, everyone!

Upgrading my Group Speed Dial to version 21.0 last week, wraps up a HUGE upgrade of my most important addons, to ensure their compatibility / resistance to the upcoming Armagaddon :) in January 2023, called Manifest V3.

What is this Manifest V3 and why is it a problem?

All existing addons/extensions are built using Manifest V2 architecture. The V3 is simply an upgrade that brings some new features and removes many existing features. This upgrade comes after 10 years since the first version V1, so it's a big deal!

The problem is, that none of the existing extensions will work in V3 without some modifications.

Google Chrome plans to disable old addons already in January 2023:

Microsoft Edge will disable old addons in June 2023.

Firefox doesn't have a deadline yet.

State of my addons:

I've started migrating my addons in April with my ScrollAnywhere addon where I experimented with the new V3 technology and fixed some of the main issues.

After that, over the next months I've successfully migrated Private Notes, Auto Highlight, Web Translate, Movie Meter, New Window Setup, Rocker Gestures, Unload Tab and finally my Group Speed Dial addon.

The only missing is my Tab Sync Pro and Send Note to Device, but I will upgrade those at the end of this year.

Future plans

Migrating my addons to V3 took me almost 4 months, so some long-ago requested features has been delayed.

The good news is, it's over now and I'm again 100% focusing on new features!

Mostly in my Group Speed Dial addon where the upcoming 21.2 version will add new "List view" and special "Top pages" group! And there is more (and much more cool) features coming soon! So stay tuned :).

Thank you all for supporting my work with your donations!

You are the reason I can work on my addons every day so big THANK YOU for helping me do what I love :).

PS: me in my Firefox cap, it's 28°C in the office so NO I don't wear it while working :)
