The future of the Legion.... (Patreon)

First off, let me state that I haven't forgotten about the Off-Panel page for Sonic Retold #3. It was one of the high-tier Patron rewards that was postponed during my absence. I'm working on it just now and it should be ready in the next few days. ^_^

Second, I mentioned in my last post that I would be discussing back issues of Archie Sonic while researching ideas for my script. I'm particularly focused on Knuckles' adventures and the echidna society as a whole, which has undergone drastic changes under Ken Penders' quill. Knuckles' transformation into Chaos Knuckles was a turning point for the character, but I needed to re-read the issues to remember the details. One part of this arc was the four-issue story "Reunification" in Sonic #106-109.

No doubt inspired by Days of Future Past, it introduces Jani-Ca (Lara-Su) who travels back in time to prevent Knuckles' assassination. Meanwhile, Knuckles is working with Dimitri to reintegrate the Legion into echidna society. After the assassination is foiled, the high council agrees to review Dimitri's request aaaaaaand...... nothing happens. o_O

The arc shifts back to Jani-Ca returning to her time, but the loose thread of the Legion's reintegration is never properly concluded. The image above is the last you ever see of this plot point, then the next arc involves Mammoth Mogul kidnapping Dimitri. The Legion's prospects remain unfulfilled right up until Sonic's extended absence from Mobius.

This is one of those odd loose ends from the old continuity that nobody ever talks about, but seems critical to the echidna side of the story. What happened? After Knuckles' evolution, there was a prolonged build-up of him working with the Legion from Sonic #99 onwards, but there was no payoff. Whether or not the high council supported the Legion is a mystery because soon Echidnaopolis was destroyed after Sonic returned home.

The reason I bring this up is because I'm trying to work out how this relates to Sonic Retold. Currently, the fighting is over and now the echidnas have to try and rebuild Albion with the D.E.L. It presents opportunities of cooperation... or domination depending on the outcome. If echidna society is to continue changing and merging with the Legion remains a possibility, how do you think it will go.....?
