"The Solution. Oh, my little friend, if only you were.", The Doctor examining a vial, "Castrovalva" I have been really looking forward to your reaction to the 5th Doctor's regeneration callbacks to the previous Doctors and earlier companions. As with the New Who callbacks to Classic Who, it's really nice that the writers felt able to refer to the show's history - and it's fun that having watched the Classic series from the beginning with you we are able to pick up these references. BTW: playing the recorder - how wonderful! Talking about New Who references: we see the 5th Doctor's glasses that the 10th Doctor mentioned in "Time Crash". BTW: Does anyone else think back to the 3rd Doctor's wheelchair in "Spearhead from Space" when one appears in the TARDIS? I really like the way the Doctor drives it round and round in circles in the console room. We get a pre-title sequence - the first in Classic Who. It is obviously a special case - there would have been some viewers who had never seen a Doctor other than Tom. I do agree with you - I really enjoy the teamwork of Nyssa and Tegan as they try to work through their bizarre situation. We're getting a good-sized, competent TARDIS crew here. And I like the scene when the Doctor is allocating roles for the crew during his post-regeneration phase. "So, this air hostess person's flying it, eh? Well I wish her the best of luck.", The Doctor, "Castrovalva" Talking costumes: we gradually see Nyssa losing the full "fairy" version of her Traken costume (e.g. her haircomb getting caught in a tree) into a more practical outfit for climbing over rocks and things. At the end of the episode, we finally get the character credit of "The Doctor" rather than "Doctor Who". That was a request of Peter. The same thing happened for the 10th Doctor - at David's request. I certainly prefer it. "An isolated space cut off from the rest of the universe.", "He should have told me that's what he wanted. I could have shown him Brisbane.", Nyssa and Tegan, "Castrovalva" Well, that would be Brisbane, capital of the state of Queensland in Australia and was where Janet Fielding was born. (I haven't been there so can't comment on Tegan's joke.) We've heard mention of Brisbane before in the show - in "The Talons of Weng-Chiang" Magnus Greel was called the "Butcher of Brisbane".

Goddamn, was it a ballsy move to introduce Five by having him destroy Four's scarf. Just imagine how you would have reacted if the first thing we saw Twelve do was destroy Eleven's bowtie; that's the exact thing they were putting the fans through here. But maybe it really was necessary, to make clear that Baker really was gone and not coming back (it's not like this current time is the only one to have super loony fans).

I’m going to start by being candid. When I gave thought to my ranking of Doctors about four or five years ago, the Fifth Doctor was in the lower half. This by no means is anything against Peter Davison as he is fantastic. “There are no bad Doctors, only bad writing.” as the expression goes. Not to say the writing during Five’s run is generally bad per se, that I recall anyway. You expressed something I’ve often suspected with the Whovians in that it probably was an adjustment. And I feel bad for Peter Davison that he had the unenviable position of following Tom Baker. It’s like how George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton followed Sean Connery and Roger Moore respectfully; you’re following the man considered the best version of the character and are under that shadow, alternatively, you follow the man who appeared the most and people got comfortable with. With Peter Davison, I feel that probably affected fan opinion of him, though I do know that Five does have his fans. Thankfully, Jess, you have an open mind, and though you’re cemented on Eleven being your honey, you’ve now had a favorable first start with Five. A highlight of the regeneration is that the Doctor is somewhat out of the game, leading to Tegan and Nyssa working together. Sucks for Adric, who for being, as I understand it, the Wesley of Doctor Who, he held his own against the Master. That boy showed grit. Like you, I do love the callbacks to the Doctors and companions past. Similarly, I adored your reactions to them, the recorder and K-9 being the reactions you had that got me the most. I had Sesska’s Spa on my mind thinking the Doctor could do with a vist. Then he mentioned deleting rooms, which gave you concern about the spa. I was tickled by that, thinking, “That’s an amusing coincidence.” Much though I don’t disagree how silly it looked trying to carry the Doctor in the coffin looking cabinet on a wheelchair, take it from me, Jess, wheelchairs are sturdy as all hell. A fun first half of the reactions to your introduction to Five, which I most enjoyed, Jess. Thank you.

That is one benefit to Eleven taking off the bowtie prior to the regeneration into Twelve to prevent any harm being done to it. On the other hand, Twelve’s ensemble got perpetually worse for wear as Thirteen’s first hour went along. Though there, I did appreciate how long she wore the old outfit, as it was helpful to me in getting acclimated to Thirteen following the departure of Peter as Twelve. To your one point, destroying the iconic scarf does carry the note of finality. Yes, the super-loopy fans have always existed. The internet and social media has just given them a better platform to be more vocal.

Davison also had the disadvantage of being unusually young for the role at 29, and would remain the youngest until Matt Smith. Which was just catnip to the fans already disinclined to accept him, though he seems to have won a lot of them over by the time he left the role (and certainly in comparison to Colin Baker).

I remember watching the Peter Davison Doctor Who's back in the day. The only time I've really watched it. Even over here, he's probably better known for playing a vet in All Creatures Great And Small with the guy who played Cornelius Fudge in Harry Potter. Still working today though, and he hasn't changed all that much!
