Good thing you weren't hoping to save your throat on these two, with both Rex and Cad Bane showing up. Rex going full Aragorn for his entrance was a very neat touch, and that bit of animation as he remembers his own time under the chip's control is one of those not strictly necessary but very appreciated moments that Filoni and his crew are so good at. Some fans were disappointed that this one action scene was all that the weeks of Wrecker's ominous headaches were leading to, but I have a very hard time imagining what a full arc of him going bad could add to the show that we don't already have with Crosshair's story, so this was plenty for me. Much more troublesome is that, as you may have noticed and a lot of fans were certainly complaining about, after the Batch's Clone Wars arc went to so much trouble to reveal Echo was alive and have him join them, at least up to now he's been given surprisingly little to do, made especially clear when Rex brings up Fives and he doesn't seem to have any kind of emotional reaction. Does he even have any idea what happened to Fives? Because from what we get here, your guess is as good as mine. Still, just having Rex here is a joy, and another fun indication that the potential spinoff about the Martez sisters is still canon even if we don't get to see much of it. On the next episode, keep in mind that this season came before The Book of Boba Fett, so this was the first time we saw Cad Bane since Clone Wars (and unlike those of us watching at the time, you know that he'll survive this appearance whatever happens, which should add an interesting wrinkle). And the show's crew knows exactly what we'd want to see from his appearance on this show and doesn't waste any time giving it to us. Plus they manage to do it without making Hunter look bad, since Bane only wins the quickdraw with a wild shot from the hip that a trained soldier couldn't be prepared for. Both these episodes also show a real strength in being able to bring these characters back in a way that doesn't just feel like empty fanservice (just contrast to Bane's appearance in Boba Fett). That's something the show is always great at.

I see that you have uploaded the pilot on Youtube Jess. I just want to say again, please be very wary of spoilers coming, especially from the first vid. I hope the stuff about Kanan showing up, is the only thing you know about. Editing and converting this reaction right now for my own perusal, but will post the rest of my thoughts once done and I've seen it! :D

I rewatched these episodes last night and thought they would be a rollercoaster for you Jess; two very good ones indeed. Indeed, you are correct that you can get the Mantel Mix that Omega and Wrecker eat, at Galaxy's Edge - nice bit of promo there. People got so excited when we got to Bracca. There is a Jedi there in hiding at this time. ;) As we see, Bracca is a ship-breaking planet dismantling all the big Republic and Separatist ships from the Clone War, and is where you start off on in the game Jedi : Fallen Order. The Jedi padawan in hiding, is who you play in it, Cal Kestis. At this time he'd only be about 13 (only slightly older than Omega), and he stays there for 5 years until the Inquisitors show up when he uses the force to rescue his friend. Then thats when you take over and play through the game as him. The big beastie in the water here, is in the game too, which is a great nod! We might see Cal one day in live action as well, as his actor, Cameron Monaghan, is a fine screen actor. Rebels is my favourite aesthetic in Star Wars animation, I love the minimalism and 70's Ralph McQuarrie designs; but my god, seeing our crew here walk onto that Jedi Cruiser, is jaw-dropping. The sense of scale and the rustic colours really jump out beautifully. And season 3 is even a step forward on this!! Onto Rex. In the last ep I mentioned that there is a clue as to who Rafa contacts, and the clue is the astromech - that's Ahsoka's droid from Clone Wars. We saw it being beside Rex as he approaches the Y-Wing and looks over to see Ahsoka at the clone graves they dug; so uses it now to be a help to the Martez sisters in doing their missions with and for him. I'm glad that Rex doesn't tell them who helped him remove his chip; though we can trust this squad and Echo of course served under Rex and Ahsoka in the 501st. She is in hiding just now and that would be a big secret to reveal. I hate the background implications of this episode. It shows the tragedy of the clones. First they are forced to turn on their beloved Jedi Generals and destroy the order, to end the Republic and therefore bring the rise of evil under the Empire; and here - like with Crosshair and Wrecker - this bloody chip turns clone against clone when it is activated. And for it to happen with Wrecker, who is the most terrifying, yet childlike; is just horrible. I like how Hunter tells them of what happened to them with the Jedi in the pilot episode. Obviously when he talks of the padawan, he is referring to Kanan, who as we know, Rex will work with in the next 15 years. Wrecker chasing down Omega is just so sad. Seeing how close they were at the start and have been throughout; she even has his gun firing towards him solidifying that link. Later when the chip is removed and he apologises, we all know he couldn't help it, but he'd still feel horrible about his actions towards her and the others. She, like the delightful person she is, is fine and accepts him to help him get over that guilt. That bloody chip... Rex looking at his helmet and everything he's done in the war, wondering what it was all about. Its just a moment, but one we know he is thinking of how it all went wrong. And when he moves off into the fog, it shows us this legend will still be fighting for everyone up until Endor, when most of his brothers are dead, killed or turned sides now.

Onto 1x8 : Wrecker showing Omega the ropes in disarming some explosive devices (which she failed at!). He mentions he failed his first time too, which I think is evident by the scars and loss of eyesight on his face! I like Echo and Hunter's dialogue. Hunter is wanting to keep them in low profile for all their sake, especially Omega; Echo is just like Rex, a soldier to the core, loyal to his definition of the Republic. Its a dynamic that gets brought up several times, as it asks what the Bad Batch themselves should be? Soldiers fighting against the Empire? Or a family who look after each other trying to stay safe. This period is all about change, and choosing sides, as Rafa said. Rex has chosen his, what about our crew? Omega asked the wrong person about the war, Tech is totally logical and can think no other way. Perhaps she should ask Echo, though I hope he would leave the part out about him being turned into half-droid by the separatists. As Kanan later says, "battles leave scars, some you can't see". Crosshair is my favourite of the Bad Batcher's, but man is he cold: "aim for the kid..."; of course this is the chip speaking, but he was always cut-throat if you remember how he acted when we first met him in the Clone Wars arc where our squad was introduced, and him clashing with Jesse and Rex. Using the Jedi Cruiser as a weapon against the imperials, hints that not all the republic is gone yet. And Crosshair took an engine blast to the face, ouch! We all screamed at Cad Bane showing up, he's not just a bounty hunter, but THE bounty hunter! Hunter is quick on the draw, but he's not Cad Bane quick... Now Omega is gone, and we see how quickly the squad have warmed to Omega who they consider to be one of their own. They will move heaven and Earth to find her.

Yeah I agree that its bad enough we have much of this episode dealing with Wrecker going haywire, we don't need more especially as it would just be repeating one of them going against our crew, and thats what the Crosshair story versus the others is all about. Can only imagine how bad this could have went had Rex not showed up though and took them to that Cruiser. Wrecker going ape on Ord Mantel or aboard The Marauder would not have ended well for our crew.

Quite the whirlwind of a day, Jess. Love the showcasing of where the batch’s relationship with Cid is at. Humorous to see Omega and Wrecker indulge in the Mantell Mix, which yes, I too have heard it’s at Galaxy’s Edge. I’ve never had it but judging by its appearance, I get a Chicago style popcorn tin vibe from it myself. Now to the return of Rex, which your delight in seeing that was wonderful, Jess. It was guessed those three years ago, following the Martez sisters’ episode that it was him that the Martez sisters contacted. Those that didn’t predict that asked those of us that did how we knew, to which my response was, “Well, that was a guess, but it seemed logical.” I don’t mind in the slightest your going on and on about your love for Rex. You know me and the characters I’ll chatter away about. You love the noble characters such as Rex, who has indeed been doing stuff and thangs as you said, which, as you also commented, all the best men do. A fantastic plotline of the inhibitor chips being fully addressed. And thanks to Rex, Tech now has the better information to work with. To answer your question of “Why is it always so STRESSFUL!?!” I refer to you the statement made in a most excellent youtube video, which was, “Star Wars is a story filled with hope and revolution, but it’s safe to say its characters suffer time and time again. Not Palpy. No, Palpy is loving life 24/7” I knew you were worried about Wrecker; the feeling was mutual. I have been waiting for this episode. I recall your introduction to Wrecker and what a big lug he is, and how you found him to be a lot. Come this episode, when the chip activates, and Wrecker goes full Manchurian Candidate, it is terrifying, and everything about your reaction to that was worth the wait, Jess. The writing and Dee’s acting sold it all so well. I so adored your reaction to Wrecker apologizing, and Omega keeping the post-mission tradition going. And Rex then rides off into the distance leaving you with a delightful ending. Or it would have been if it were not for the scrapper shenanigan silliness putting a damper on the sweet ending of the episode. I would not have been opposed to you continuing to be most loquacious about your love of Rex for an additional thirty minutes. The second episode of this reaction brings the drama. I love the nervousness you feel with Crosshair. Made more notable that as you observe, he knows how the batch operates, to the extent that even Tech, with all his cleverness and badassery is at something of an impasse. Sidenote, I adore that you are expressing living for Tech. You expressed queries on the batch’s plans if any of trying to help Crosshair with the chip, the same thought crossed my mind as well, so your in good company there. First, he’s got to get to a medic after that playing with fire. Scarred for life he is, I would imagine. Then we get the incredible return of Cad Bane, and I LIVED for your response, “SHUT. THE FRONT. DOOR. RIGHT NOW.” And like when Fennec arrived, one, I love that his name is never said, and two, it leads me to say to the batch, “I’m sorry, boys, you’re not getting rooted for at this time.” Cad’s appearance was especially surprising in that there was a planned arc in Clone Wars that he was meant to appear in. The conclusion of which, it was believed at the time, resulted in his death. Whilst that arc never fully came to fruition, it was assumed that it still happened. Thus, seeing Cad alive and well provided a jolt. And even with you having seen Cad’s presumed death in The Book of Boba Fett, it does not diminish anything of your reaction to his appearance here, said reaction was fantastic. Of course, the thing is, when Cad is paid, he always sees the job through. You know that, Jess. And yes, the batch needs to save Omega. Alas, your reaction to seeing that, I’ll be behind on as I’m going to be on the road for most of the day next Tuesday, followed by an engagement in the evening, so I probably won’t see next week’s reaction until late at night, hours before the brand spanking new Bad Batch episode. It will be a lovely way to end the day, that’s for goddamn sure. Until then, I thank you so much, Jess, for this week’s wonderful reaction.

Tis going to be difficult in the youtube comments’ section, I would imagine. I know I’ve been doing my best to keep quiet on certain things, and I’m not going to say what, and even then, I’m only human, much though I hate that sometimes. I share the hope that the Kanan cameo was the only thing spoiled, and I reiterate that I’ll do my best to keep mum, spoiler-wise, I promise.

Bane does have a metal plate on his head here, so that's presumably how he survived that intended death. If it worked for Fennec, I have absolutely no problem believing it here. And oddly he doesn't seem to put much stock in a certain other quote from the same source: If you have to shoot, shoot. Don't talk.

I caught the episodes again on Easter. Yeah, you knew they’d be a roller coaster for Jess. Like I said, I get a vibe similar to the Chicago style popcorn tins with the Mantell Mix. Maybe a little Cracker Jack vibe as well. The Bracca appearance was nice. I can’t settle on my favorite for the three primary animated shows. Clone Wars I love for the scope and Shakespearean tragedy. Aided by the expansion of the Emperor’s being Iago meets Richard III with the Faustian overtones. Rebels you love the tighter focus and as Jess and I loved, the overarching theme of found family during war/hellish times like it is on our favorite shows; The Walking Dead for Jess, M*A*S*H for me. And The Bad Batch just has that great A-Team/Dirty Dozen for Star Wars feel which is so great. Good eye on the droid. This show does further emphasize the tragedy of the clones, and by extension, the commitment to making Order 66 the most traumatic fictional event. I know others say the Red Wedding or the Snap from the Marvel movies. No, it’s Order 66; nothing matches the feelings that came from first seeing that almost nineteen years ago now, and all the subsequent material just keeps making it worse. A nice little nod to the then future friendship between Rex and Caleb. Wrecker being full-on Manchurian Candidate felt like the Xenomorph in Alien meets Roy Batty’s big chase scene at the end of Blade Runner, scary stuff. Omega does indeed have a good heart. Love that last scene with Rex.

I share the opinion that Jess expressed that it was a good touch how Wrecker is self-aware enough to say that even he’s not that certifiable to have Omega train with live explosives. Strong dialogue between Hunter and Echo. Tech’s description of war. Well, it’s been a thing I’ve heard that Tech is embraced by the fandom as having Asperger’s. I have it myself, and even if it’s not intended, he is a respectful and accurate representation of someone who has it, evidenced by his answer to Omega, complete with his “I just told you.” which is absurdly relatable. Alas, he’s still second behind Crosshair for favorite of the batch. God is it great seeing him in action. Most unfortunate things got a little hot under the collar. Cad Bane’s return was so fantastic, and Jess and her reaction was worth the price of admission. Heaven and earth will indeed be moved by the batch to rescue Omega.
