The 5th Doctor's time in the Tardis has always given me the vibe of the older brother travelling with his squabbling younger siblings😂Don't know what Classic Who DVD's you own Jess, but the commentary with Davison and the cast is always brilliant, so much chaotic energy! It feels like they all snuck into a recording booth with drinks and watched their old episodes just to make fun of 'em, and I'm sure that's not far from the truth!

Stratford Johns - here playing Monarch - was far more familiar to viewers at this time for his role of Detective Chief Superintendent Charlie Barlow, a character that he portrayed first in police procedural series Z Cars, then in two spin-off series, Softly Softly Task Force and then Barlow At Large., so it was greeted with complete astonishment that he turns up as an anthropomorphized frog in Doctor Who. Frank Windsor, who played his colleague Detective Inspector Watt of the fictional Thamesford Constabulary, appears in Doctor Who a few years later in a far more recognizable form! Burt Kwouk was usually found at the side of Peter Sellers as his manservant Cato Fong in the Inspector Clouseau - Pink Panther films. The running gag was that Cato was ordered to attack Clouseau when he least expected it to keep him alert, usually with disastrous results. In Sellers' last film outing, the sadly not really well received, The Fiendish Plot Of Fu Manchu, Burt turns up again as a servant in the opening scene, Sellers saying to him "your face is familiar!" Burt was always called upon when an oriental actor was called for in British television series and films and did indeed become a very familiar face from the 60s onwards, also as a regular with comedian Harry Hill.

The Aboriginal character's dialogue (and Tegan's when she demonstrates she can speak his language) was originally scripted as plausible-sounding gibberish. Janet Fielding, an Australian, felt this was insulting, and requested that the writer consult the BBC's language department to rewrite the dialogue in an actual Aboriginal language. The one they settled on was Tiwi as filmed.

Thank you for another great reaction. I wasn't sure what you'd make of this story. When I first saw it way back when I wasn't as keen on it. I think coming off the back of the 4th Doctors amazing run, I was very much getting used to the new Tardis Team & it took me a while to gel with them. It has grown on me since. I think the dialogue between the Monarch, Persuasion and Englightenment is hilarious with Monarch scalding them for blaspheming! I too was impressed by Tegans masterpiece as drawn with just a pencil & paper & how she understands Aboriginal Australian. This is counterbalanced by Nyssa & Adrics apparent calmness & being content to explore. Many people have said 3 companions is too much to handle but I disagree when it's done right & think they nailed it with this Tardis team. See you next time!

As someone who also found themselves drawn to the arts, humanities and languages rather than science and maths, I'm firmly Team Tegan & Jess. I definitely want a green velvet jacket like Persuasion. Just to ponce around the house in. I'm also craving an avocado after watching this again.

I'm impressed with the 'speed' with which Tegan managed such a highly finished pencil drawing! It's miraculous given the time constraints! It must the result of the hidden minutes and hours phenomenon that we are witness to in that marvellous - though temporally anomalous - world of television.

James Fish

Yes, most of the sketch must have taken place 'off-screen'. I could imaginbe the Doctor saying 'For god sake hurry up!'

Josef Schiltz

About three to four hours worth - and possibly a bit more - in those 'sketches'! Tegan was really, really busy! Lol! Perhaps the Doctor's pencil has some dilatory effects?

James Fish

Well it must have had a hell of a lot of lead! Probably dimensionally transcendental!
