So lovely that your schedule put these two together, and your reactions to Hera and Chopper were everything I was hoping for. It’s so great that they had the confidence that she could carry this story herself with minimal screen time for the show’s main characters, and the whole thing is done so well that I imagine even someone who hadn’t seen any of Rebels would be able to get into it. I especially appreciate how it corrects one part of Rebels that never sat right with me, how Hera’s mother was a badly outdated case of a female character whose only importance to the story is that she’s dead, not even getting the dignity of a name. And Eleni is fully believable as someone who would combine with Cham to make the character we know so well, plus she even gets to survive despite us knowing she dies in an Imperial prison, which led a lot of us to spend the week between the episodes assuming we’d be seeing that. And what little we get of the Batch also works great and is everything you’d want from them meeting Hera, with Omega so proudly showing off her room being the big highlight. I have to close by giving big props to Vanessa Marshall, who in stark contrast to Freddie Prinze Jr. is 100% believable as a child version of her character, and is even able to perfectly nail the accent for a whole two parter after the tantalizing glimpses of it in Rebels. Easily one of the season’s big highlights.

We knew you were going to like these two eps Jess! This could almost be a Rebels episode with a cameo by the Bad Batch, and it captures everything that mighty show had. None of knew we were getting Hera and Chopper when the trailer came up, so it was a very pleasant surprise to see them, after Kanan turning up in the pilot. I'm not even sure the Ahsoka series was scheduled at this point, so we didn't know if Rebels was to be the last thing featuring them; so this one brought back many of the "feels". When watching this story, I'm always reminded of the Ryloth arc in season 1 of Clone Wars, with the episode with Numa the little Twilek girl, and at the end as she hugs the clones, they say to her "don't worry little one, we'll be back" - well here they are, not as liberators like then, but as occupiers under the Empire. This episode almost echoes last one, where we see the beginning of what being in the Empire will bring, this time however its not on a Separatist world, but a Republic one. The senator there decided it wasn't for him and he'd do what he could to fight back, while Orn Free Taa is more than fine with it, since he has been hanging around Palpatine for a long time now both in the movies, and in Clone Wars. Cham and Eleni Syndulla want this peace to work, but soon see that they aren't finished fighting yet. Howzer is an interesting clone. He seemed to be Cham's clone commander in the war, and looks to be 'normal', just like we saw with the clones during the war. To me this suggests he never got Order 66 since there was no Jedi seemingly on Ryloth after they left. He must have been assigned to Cham. This isn't just reflected in his attitude, but also note he has his armour coloured still. All the other reg clones now are unpainted and monochromatic to reflect their obedience to the Imperial Regime. Hera is 10 here (she is 24 when we first meet her in Rebels, Kanan was 14 in the first episode and hence 28 in season 1 of Rebels). She's had Chopper just a couple of years and so he's not quite what we see him later become, a little madman!! Hera and Chop look great in this animation, though Chop isn't that different from what he looks like in Rebels. She would have took him out of the crashed Y-Wing (which you see in the background in one of the scenes) in the first year of the Clone War, so nearly 3 years at this point they have been together. You can hear Chopper's squeaky wheel still - so in all these years, she never oiled them! :D That line from Cham though, that it is his hope that Hera won't have to fight, when we know all she'll end up doing, makes me well up. Very sneaky of Gobi (who is fighting alongside Cham in Rebels with Numa) saying to Hera she could come and fly the ship during the supply run - it seems all of her family are rebellious! Hera is even in her correct seat as well when flying - its too much! :D Hera towers over Omega, but Omega we believe is a year or two older (its not confirmed her age but she is clearly a bit younger than Boba who would be in his early teens at this point). So while Hera is 10, Omega is around 12 and short for her age. Its so sweet watching the two of them together, and Hera telling her of her dream to become a pilot and live on a starship. And these creators damn well know what they are doing using Hera's Theme as well! Welling up again writing that! :) Cham getting setup for the attempted assassination of his old nemesis Orn Free Taa; strategically its a good move by Admiral Rampart as Taa was always disposable and it gets rid of Cham so that the people don't have a leader. He underestimates him to the Empire's peril.

1x12 : Great line from Eleni Syndulla speaking to Rampart : "I have seen how you treat your allies Admiral; I'd rather remain your enemy" - its a beauty. Hera's hologram kneeling and saying "I need your help", just like Leia. Hunter is unwilling to overly risk his squad, but Omega tells him they are soldiers, its what they are there to do. She sometimes sees things clearer than the rest of the crew. Just also noticed Hera has her arms crossed in worry about her parents before the Bad Batch commit to helping her. We saw that multiple times in Rebels whenever she was worried for her crew, and when she was grieving for Kanan. So cute seeing Hera organise her first plan as a leader. We know she becomes such a guide for her family and great rebel leader down the line; great to watch the start of all this, with Chopper at her side! :) Chopper shanking that droid with glee then shouting "get out the way!" - he's something else! As I say earlier, he isn't quite his snarky self yet, but when he gets there, watch out galaxy !! :D Tech may not have a 'feeling' about flying, but he still has some moves! Howzer doing the honourable thing in telling our crew of the imperial plan to ambush them, but won't go with them as he is loyal to his men. So many of the regular clones were good honourable people and great soldiers; there is still some of them left who may be able to get out of the Empire, and do their own thing like our crew here. We see it with Rex later, but how many others managed it? I appreciate seeing Hunter look towards him as he goes off to try to get through to his men, as Hunter surely feels the responsibility of being the leader of his own crew. Cool that Hera learnt how to scramble the Ghost's signature from Tech, love that! We didn't think we'd get to see the start of Hera's fight against the Empire when this aired, but as Eleni Syndulla states, it will be the next generation's fight to when war does come. And Hera and Chopper will be right in the thick of it!! I love seeing Omega beginning to find her own personality, and show that she has great strength and help Hera find hers, who we see she gives strength to the Ghost crew later in Rebels, especially season 1 with Sabine and Kanan having self-doubts about his ability to be a mentor and Jedi for Ezra. So unexpected but joyous and emotional, to see Hera and Chop start this decades-long fight against the Empire. Crosshair's face after he asks permission to go after his former brother's, there is a lot going on there.

I was most anticipating your reaction to this two-parter, Jess. And I am pleased nobody spoiled this for you. I mentioned this is where I started back up after I fell behind. The weekend part one of this aired happened during a terrible, terrible week, the weekend was busy, and by the time the second episode aired, a certain event had happened, and things were bad enough that I was in a dreadful place and had no strength to watch. Despite that, the internet was OBSCENELY LOUD over our guest stars these episodes. My cousin was beyond happy about said guests, so I knew I had something good to look forward to when I ultimately started back with the show. Words do not do justice to how delightful it is, Jess, to see how lovely it is to see your reactions to young Hera. Now, as Ryan notes, we have another case like Freddie Prinze Jr as Caleb and dear Ming-Na as Fennec in that Vanessa Marshall is significantly older than Hera is meant to be, but, the twi’lek accent, combined with Vanessa’s skill as a voice actor, you cannot tell. It is truly wonderful to see young Hera move you so. A lovely touch of Kevin Kiner’s theme for her playing. A theme that’s worthy of John Williams himself, especially as the theme contains that nice little homage to John by featuring that distinctive melodic progression that John likes to use. I understand your nervousness throughout the two-parter, though you had some comfort of Chopper going to chop. Amusingly, it seems like Chopper’s days of wanton murder were in their infancy at this point. Though I would imagine the events of this two-parter likely pushed those days into their adolescence. Love the showcase of Cham and Eleni navigating the early days of the Empire. Not helped by the “attempted assassination” of Orn Free Taa. Of course, no need to worry about that fat fucker, no he’s fine. The melon he calls a head’s so thick, the blaster bolt probably didn’t even penetrate his skull. Whether he’s fine following the last time I’ve seen him remains to be seen. A lovely dynamic between Hera and Omega. It does make sense, as you said, Hunter’s reluctance to get involved, particularly upon learning Crosshair’s present. Though you knew he’d cave. I do love Chopper snarking to Hunter, “Quite the smooth talker there, Billy Boy.” when Hunter isn’t initially forthcoming with the help. I enjoyed your flight instructions to Hera, leading me to chime in as well with, “Try spinning; that’s a good trick.” Then there is Howzer who quickly became a fan favorite. For good reason as Howzer’s a mensch. Well shown when he lets Cham know that he’ll let Hera’s getting caught slide, but he’s not going to be able to keep doing so indefinitely. Then when he draws the line in the sand, helps our heroes, and convinces his brothers to lay down their weapons, even if it leads to their arrest. Loved all of your reactions to that. Fans were surprised that Eleni lived, though I don’t know when she dies. That’s not a spoiler as her death was mentioned in Rebels. In any event, Hera and her family, (and you too, Chopper,) live to fight another day. Things will, of course, be stressful for Cham in the years to come, especially around eight years following this when the Emperor and Darth Vader pay a personal visit to Ryloth. But that’s another story. I just so loved, Jess, everything about your reaction to the beginning of Hera’s heroic journey prior to becoming the mom of the Shady Bunch. Just as I greatly enjoyed you sounding like a mom with your not sanctioning Crosshair’s silliness. Unfortunately for you, Jess, Crosshair’s silliness has yet to reach the point to warrant Graham Chapman popping up in a colonel’s uniform to shut things down for being too silly. And now Rampart has given him permission to hunt down his family. Speaking of Rampart, no worries that you don’t like him much. I love imperial characters and he is quite the snake. I doubt too many fans will argue with you on your opinions about Rampart. Oh, this reaction was just so lovely, and is such a perfect one to leave on prior to your break. Thank you for the wonderful reaction, Jess, and best of luck with your break which I hope that your break will be lovely.

The reactions to Hera and Chopper lived up to my hopes as well. I can see that if someone hadn’t seen Rebels, like you said, they’d be able to get into these episodes. Though knowing Rebels adds so much weight to this. Yes, they do correct that aspect of Eleni and she perfectly complements and balances Cham, whilst showing how Hera inherited from both her parents. The Batch working with the Syndulla family was brilliant. And yes, props to Vanessa with her skill in her voice work as young Hera. This is one of the standouts of season one, I concur.

Ryan

My first time watching this season, I actually never picked up that Rampart even existed. It just never felt like there would be a need to keep any particular officer in mind and these could have all been different random guys.

Yes, this is essentially a Hera prequel to Rebels, with special appearances by the Bad Batch. Like I said, I knew Hera and Chopper would appear because the internet got LOUD about it upon the initial broadcast. Gave me something to look forward to once I got back to the show, though. That is a good parallel with the line Numa had. The echoes of the previous episode are great; I love the showcase of how the different planets respond to the rise of the Empire, and the myriad of ways and perspectives that can be explored. Good thought on Howzer probably not receiving Order 66. I remember reading Hera was about my age at the time when Rebels premiered; I was twenty-three when Rebels premiered ten years ago. Making Kanan my brother’s age as he turned twenty-eight that year when Rebels made its debut. Chopper is still in his early days of the murders by this point. Good observation on the squeaky wheel. Boba’s about thirteen at this point. He’s established as nine years younger than Anakin/Vader who was nineteen by Attack of the Clones, making Boba ten then. This being three years later would make Omega about a year, maybe two years younger. Figured you’d love Hera and Omega’s scenes, and especially Hera’s Theme. Until I heard it, I often imagined John’s theme for Fawkes the Phoenix for Hera, then I heard Kevin provide Hera’s Theme, and said, “Oh, yeah, that, that’s nice, that’s just right.” Strategically a good move by Rampart having Taa shot.

Thomas Corp

Eleni had a good line. Hera’s hologram call nicely parallels Leia’s famous one. In fact, having now seen little Leia in Obi-Wan, there are nice similarities and contrasts between little Hera and little Leia; seeing them when they’re young and full of zeal, yet don’t have the level of skill and experience that we know they iconically have. Good catch with Hera crossing her arms. Oh, that Chopper. Tech surely does have some moves. The moment Howzer has is fantastic. I knew Jess would love it. Given the great success of Hera’s scrambling a ship’s signature, she and the rest of the Shady Bunch owe that man plenty of beers. It is most touching seeing Omega help Hera find her way. Especially how we see young Hera in the kind of role that Ezra and Sabine were in by the beginning of Rebels, or like I said, little Leia in Obi-Wan. Yes, most joyous and emotional to see Hera and Chopper start this decades-long fight against the Empire. That was a look Crosshair had.
