This was the most successful the show ever got at making Dr. Pulaski an actual engaging character outside our horrific initial impression, and it's especially impressive that it was able to do it without denying what we'd already seen from her. Just seeing how invested you got after visibly checking out during most of her scenes before now shows how much they nailed it. Also pretty neat that despite being another Naked Now-esque pretty obvious copy of an idea from the original show, this one manages to do its own thing off that idea and justify its existence much more. If only they could have not made the old age makeup somehow look even less convincing than the jobs from two decades earlier, but just like How Short A Season, with how much else works, I'm not inclined to complain much.

have a lovely break! 👋😊

Yes, this is a strong episode to leave things on whilst you have what I hope will be a lovely break for you, Jess. The main event is Dr. Pulaski getting some much-needed time in the limelight. It’s funny, I mentioned last week being disappointed that it didn’t happen despite the prime opportunity. I forgot this one was this week. I truly enjoyed, Jess, how you loved the focus Dr. Pulaski got in this episode. Going through this with you reminds me that, overall, I don’t hate Dr. Pulaski. The main bones of contention are she replaced Beverly, which isn’t her fault. The other one being the writing let her down with the attempts to recreate the Spock and Bones dynamic without understanding what made it work. Namely, the respect the two men had, and Spock, tenuous grasp on human behavior though he had at times, he was highly well-versed in the verbal art of thrust and parry and could give just as much as he took. With Dr. Pulaski’s scenes with Data, it was more one-sided, and as Scotty once said, “It just... doesn’t! Feel! Right!” Thankfully, this episode finally confronts that some. I like the moment where Dr. Pulaski makes the machine crack, and without prompting, apologizes and revises her statement. Sweet to see Data help her, and the compliment she pays him, my reaction to that is similar to yours. The central mystery isn’t the most original, yet it yields the excellent work from Diana showing Dr. Pulaski’s stronger character moments. I concur with your observations of Picard as a captain and his faith and trust in his crew. Even if he buts heads with people, like he has with Dr. Pulaski, he still listens to her input, whilst being absurdly relatable in saying he’d appreciate being able to finish a sentence, LOVED your reaction to that part, and offers his support and stands by her decisions. Sidenote, your headcanon that Picard’s somewhat distant working relationship with Dr. Pulaski being because Picard misses Beverly so goddamn much. That is my assessment as well. In fact, I think it might be canon as, though maybe I’m projecting, there felt like a veritable cornucopia of subtext of that idea, it almost felt like straight up text. Which makes me wonder who on the writing staff was that much of a Picard/Beverly shipper. Not that I’m complaining mind you. I love how the central conflict is not malicious; it was a strong showcase of how optimism can at times be a most insidious threat. I have immense respect for Dr. Pulaski when she recognized she made her mistake, she knew such a mistake was a possibility, and shoulders the responsibility. It is great how Geordi was his trademark helpful sort, leading to you customarily singing his praises, which I adore every time you do, as it is lovely to behold, Jess. It is similarly great seeing Geordi and O’Brien working together to come up with the solution. Two upstanding, hardworking gentlemen getting things done, you got to love it. Speaking of O’Brien, nice to see he is now O’Brien. That the writers said, “How about we make Colm a more prominent character? He’s an excellent actor, the cast likes working with him. Why not let him shine more?” I share your reactions to the scene where Picard assumed full responsibility for whatever fate Dr. Pulaski would have. Likewise, a sweet moment, your reaction to Picard saying it was good to see Data again. Again, I reiterate that Picard is a rank sentimentalist. All in all, they save Dr. Pulaski, and it leads to your very sweet reaction to that and the episode itself. A lovely spot to pause on Next Gen, and I await your return, which as you say, will be here before we know it. Until then, thank you for the lovely reaction, and I wish you all the best with your break, Jess.

This is a good solid TNG episode. Pulaski being a bit bull-headed and showing overconfidence as she tackles this disease, to then succumb to it and accept that her rash decision almost costs her life. I like the conversations and working through all this with the crew, and they all raise good points to try to save everyone and bring the Doctor back when she gets a double dose of this illness. You don't see episodes like this much on tv now, everything has to have some sort of universe-wiping threat and can only be dealt with by force and showing plenty of explosions. To me, episodes like this show the best of what Starfleet should be, a good crew working together, valuing all opinions and the Captain (or Commander in some episodes with Riker) taking the weight of those decisions on their shoulders, which we see by Picard accepting responsibility if Kate gets atomised into space. I was never on board with Pulaski either when watching this as a kid, as the show just never felt right without Beverly; however I'm more keen to see how she's handled more in this season, especially as the actress is quite likeable and plays Pulaski very earnestly (and I believe was in TOS as well for a number of episodes). Also good to see Miles O'Brian getting more time in the series; Colm Meaney is great in everything.
