I haven't got to see the reaction yet - or even the episode. But I was watching the "The Church on Ruby Road" extras in preparation to watching this new series and they said something that made me sit up. Now, this has probably been mentioned to you - the extras have been out for a while, but they had one where the main cast were asked various questions and one of them was something like: "What secret room would you hope for in the TARDIS?" And Ncuti answered: "A spa room."

I adore so much that one of the first things RTD did with his new Disney money was the most juvenile, bathroom humor-based episode that show has ever had. And of course it helps a lot that we weren't just stuck with this episode on its own for a whole week, you'll see what I mean on that one. Plus, I defy anyone to come up with a better representation of this show's role in the world than the Doctor gleefully making a bunch of babies cry in terror. This one was certainly designed to freak me out, because I'm with Homer Simpson on this one: "Ughghgh, babies." And it doesn't help at all that I swear they didn't even try to make the CGI lips match the lines most of the time. And I have to wonder if this was a deliberate attempt to fix the notorious "eye goo" monster by putting a similar concept in a much lighter and wackier tone where it fits better. Whatever the cause, it really worked for me. For as much as the first few minutes are just naked exposition for the newbies, it also has my favorite acting moment of Ncuti's so far, with the way he roars "GONE!" before instantly calming down again for a fuller explanation about Gallifrey. My favorite parts of Thirteen were when she seemed about to snap like a twig, so it's lovely to see that continuing.

God, that dress is a lovely shade of blue, complimented most well by the red on your nails. Addressing the labeling of the reactions: calling it series fourteen seems to make greater sense, for as you said, convenience, ease of access. You ask is the numbering controversial, it’s confusing, I’ll tell you that much. I will say that IMDB has listed everything from the sixtieth anniversary specials onward as part of a separate Doctor Who then Classic and New Who which just creates further confusion. I also see that on your full reaction website, a similar thing has been done. My two cents would be to label the videos as series fourteen. Now to the premiere. You say you found it wonderfully weird. Not entirely sure I’d go with wonderful myself, but it’s a solid enough start to the season. I’m already seeing pretty negative comments on youtube, but it’s a fun episode to jump back into things with. It did have a good starting point for newcomers whilst still having sprinklings of lore as you noted. You mentioned that the set-up with the babies could either be cute or unnerving. I inclined towards the latter view, so I would not feel too bad. Setting aside how shit I am with kids, let alone babies, the cgi on those babies was unsettling as SHIT. They were more fucking terrifying than those goddamn e-trade babies, though mercifully less terrifying than the cgi Arnold Schwarzenegger baby in Junior. Of course, I can’t judge as I was ugly as HELL as a baby. How I look as an adult isn’t much of an improvement to be fair. I liked the character of Jocelyn. I shared your reaction to her letting it all out when Ruby and The Doctor talked her down from ejecting the bogeyman. Speaking of, you and I caught what the monster was right about the same time. In my case it clicked, making the connection how though it’s “booger” in American English, it’s called “bogey” in English English. Rather amusing how your mind went to the show got dark enough to have babies getting eaten in the season premiere. I’m fucked in the head, even my brain didn’t make that leap. Which is weird considering the number of memes and jokes my brother and I have shared between us, vis-à-vis Revenge of the Sith, pertaining to Anakin and the younglings. God, we’re sick. And to further illustrate my point as to how sick I am, I was cackling at all your reactions and comments about your fear and concern about the baby becoming a light nosh for the monster. Apparently, I have a sicker sense of humor than our current Doctor, which as you say, you are living for. Could have down without the fart joke, “That happened.” as you said. All in all, the story resolved well, with further intrigue about Ruby. The day will come when they go to that church on Ruby Road that Christmas. But it is not this day. It’s going to happen though. You don’t set something like that up and not follow through with it, not on this show. Other highlights: The Doctor kept saying about pushing buttons, to the point where, in addition to making you nervous, my response was that I started bellowing, “Push the button, Max!!” after every time the Doctor would say something button pushing related. I just could not resist. Alas, no Betty in the opening. I did get somewhat upset on your behalf on that one, Jess, saying, “Wha-No Betty? Well, apart from anything else, that’s just rude.” You, however, ultimately were ok with it as the scene was still majestic, so that makes me happy. Still curious how the Doctor did the John Coffey thing with the butterfly, though that time-travel gag was hysterical. Another shared moment that you and I had: Without getting too in-depth into the issue that the writing was so obviously alluding to, I shared a similar reaction to the reaction you had at Ruby inquiring about how the planet down below will refuse to stop the babies being born, but once they're born, they don't look after them, I heard that line, and went, “...Ah-ha. Hmm.” Then there’s the thing you greatly appreciated about the theme of seeing things through the companion’s eyes. That’s me lots of times with your reactions. It’s beautiful seeing a lot of the shows and films through your eyes, and Doctor Who is particularly lovely to view through your eyes, Jess. So, yeah, maybe not the strongest episode, but I liked it well enough, and it was lovely to see you greatly enjoyed it. I thank you for the fun reaction, and I wish you all the best of luck with the editing and copyright with the next episode. I do hope it doesn’t prove too distressful. Until then, again, a fun reaction, Jess, thank you.

I just assumed it was the same way he breathed a year of his life into the TARDIS in Rise of the Cybermen. I was just amused by the whole thing since a certain set of fans had been freaking out at the scene in the trailer, saying it went against all the show's rules about time travel. To which I said, there's probably going to be some "whatever device" one line explanation, plus let's not start pretending this show has EVER had consistent rules. It's the place that gave the world the phrase "a big ball of timey wimey stuff."

Thomas Corp

That could be; what you said of the connection to the Rise of the Cyberman. My thoughts were more, “Wait, he, he can do that now? Or is this reference to something I’m not recalling right now?” I didn’t see the trailer, so to hear you say that certain viewers were crying about it for some time, first I’ve heard that one. At least as it pertains to this season. Because a fandom crying about canon being upended? Inconceivable.

I don't watch Doctor Who despite it being an institution here, but I want to ask; how is everyone finding Ncuti? He's been getting rave reviews here in the UK it seems, and looks to be something fresh to bring in new fans to the show.

I will say it is something that Davies had the cajónes to just go full-tilt with the type of humor with the money this show now has. It’s like the line in Anchorman, “I’m not even mad, that’s amazing!” Again, this is probably not going to become one of my favorite episodes of the show, but I do applaud the chutzpah. That’s a succinct thought of representation of this show’s role in the world by having the Doctor gleefully making a bunch of babies cry in terror. I have been hearing that I’m not alone on being unsettled by the cgi with the babies. Seeing you and others expressing that, makes me say, “Oh, thank you. Good, that’s not just me then.” I have also come across a few comments expressing a similar assessment concerning the bogeyman thing being an attempt to rectify the previous eye-goo monster. That is a damn good acting moment from Ncuti. Similar thoughts on Thirteen in that it was a highlight to see Jodie sell how the Doctor was nearing a breaking point and struggling to maintain her customary bubbly and vivacious personality.

Thomas Corp

So far, I’m liking him well enough in the role. I don’t have much to compare him to when it comes to his past work, save for Barbie. Peter Capaldi as the Doctor is cemented as my Doctor, very closely followed by Matt Smith in second, and John Hurt and William Hartnell tying for third; Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee roughly tie to round out the top five for some frame of reference. Ncuti’s done well so far. Strong energy. A little high-spirited, and maybe just a wee bit too silly for my personal tastes in some regards, more so the plots, the stories. But it’s still early days, and as I said, Ncuti’s acclimated well, in my opinion. He has made a solid first impression.

First Doctor: "Sheer poetry, dear boy, sheer . . . What did you say this creature was made of? . . . Sniff, hmmph! Don't be ridiculous!" Second Doctor: "Oh really? Mm. What a good idea!" Third Doctor: "Good grief! What complete and utter nonsense!" Fourth Doctor: "Ha ha ha!" Fifth Doctor: "Well, there's always something new! . . . . stifles a laugh." Sixth Doctor: "OH REALLY! THIS HAS GONE TOO FAR!" Eleventh Doctor: "uUurgh! Bogies!"

Thomas Corp

How did that one line go? Oh. Yeah. “How you English say? I one more time, unclog my nose in your direction.”

Josef Schiltz

I was trying to think what remark Seven would come up with and then it hit me. Seventh Doctor: hHerh herh! Just be thankful it didn't come out of the other end!"

Josef Schiltz

Brigadier Alastair Gordon Lethbridge Stewart: "Well, that's the first time I've fired in anger at something that came from a blessed handkerchief!" Sgt. Benton: "Should we tell them to wipe their own noses, sir?" Stewart: "DON'T JUST STAND THERE SMIRKING, BENTON! OPEN FIRE!!"

Ed Green

Getting a strong Tennant vibe from him in Space Babies. 10 is my Doctor so that's fine by me.

Andrew Vignaux

Thank you for the fun reaction. I guess it had to be a weird/cute/bizarre episode to get you to forget to mention in your outro that we saw DINOSAURS! :-)
