Well played, Jess! Fortunately, the version that you saw was the original that we all saw back in February 1982 and not the one with the updated snake effect! Thankfully, the original couldn't disguise it's artificiality. We were really worried which one you would be watching. This is actually one of my favourite stories and has my favourite actress, Mary Morris as the elderly Panna and there are some obvious Prospero and The Tempest references here. Mary Morris was also in The Prisoner for one episode - which was called Dance Of The Dead - The Prisoner is a series which I hope you are familiar with - or maybe will be, one of these days - as I believe it would really appeal to you and stars Patrick McGoohan. Personally, I hate to see you traumatized. Phobias aren't for entertainment. I suffer from claustrophobia and my worst nightmares are of it. Not funny. I remember you have claustrophobia as well. Actually, one of your panic attacks from snakes was in Doctor Who. The Magician's Apprentices and The Witch's Familiar and Colony Sarff and the way you freaked out was alarming. That's when I thought that Kinda is coming and I was worried which version you would be watching. Thankfully, this one.

Well done Jess for making it through this one. I thought we may have to be consoling you afterwards, but you did it! I seem to recall commenting a while back saying that when you got to a point whereby you could choose to watch a story with original or updated effects, to choose the former. I was, of course, referring to this one but didn't want to give away any spoilers! I'm really glad you enjoyed this because it's one of my favourites also. I just think the concept of The Mara is terrifying. I've had bad dreams I can't escape from on occasion, so it really strikes a chord with me. I love Hindles madness also. The way he pulled it off was amazing. Glad you've thus far really enjoying this era. See you next time!

The worst Who-related nightmare I ever had was after seeing the troll doll in Terror Of The Autons when I was nine back in 1971.

James Fish

That was the year I was born lol so I didn't see it when it originally aired. I imagine it would have terrified me though! Terrence Dicks claims they had lots of complaints about that one because children refused to go to bed with their Teddy Bears after seeing that one lest they ' come alive in the night and set about them'. I don't mind admitting though that I've had Dalek related nightmares and some where I'm trapped in the drilling project that was Inferno, being hunted and stalked by the Primords & not getting listened to when trying to alert everyone to the dangers. Even though I didn't get to watch Inferno until it was first released on home media in the early 90's, it had a real impact on me. With the new series, I've also had Weeping Angel based nightmares - I think they're terrifying!

Josef Schiltz

Actually, come to think of it, I may have had a Dalek related nightmare after watching Evil of The Daleks - or was it Power? - it's so long ago now that the image in the nightmare sort of remains, but the context doesn't. I don't get TV related nightmares now. Human beings are far more terrifying.

So, in a few minutes, we should be getting the newest Doctor Who episode, I think. It’s almost six o’clock in the evening where I’m at right now, I think that’s when the new episode airs, in my timezone, anyway. In any case, I just wanted to take a moment to say Godspeed, Jess, with the filming and editing of your reaction. I sincerely hope the BBC overlords don’t prove too troublesome if at all with the copyright. Best of luck, come what may.

Butting into your conversation about Who related nightmares, I was 5 in 1982 and season 19 was the first time I got into Doctor Who. I was a bit scared of the Pierrot in 'Black Orchid' but the story that did scare me alot was 'The Awakening'. The Malus was terrifying to my 7 year old self, in particular that wrinkled old git apparition that manifests in the barn and traumatised Tegan...

James Fish

When I've had them, they're very loosely based on Genesis / Destiny of the Daleks, usually involving running around in a network of underground tunnels trying to avoid them! Take your point though, people are much more scary!

James Fish

I totally get your fear of The Awakening - the biggest scare for me as a kid was Robots of Death. I was 5 and irrationally thought they were going to crawl through the screen and kill us all lol!

Josef Schiltz

The worst claustrophobic nightmares that I've had are underground tunnels and then I see a ladder leading up to a hatchway, a way out, but as I climb the ladder the aperture gets smaller and smaller until it's too small for me to go any further. Most nightmares for me are missed transport. i have masses of stuff to go into a folio. It's the last bus and no matter how much I cram, not everything goes in. But I don't get TV related dreams anymore. Weeping Angels don't frighten me one bit.

James Fish

Strange you mention about missed transport, that's a theme I commonly dream about. Had one just the other night where I dreamed I missed the last bus back to my hometown, which was miles away, or that I get to where the bus is supposed to turn up only to find I have to walk to a set of stops a mile away and get there too late! I also have ones where I get on a train, which stops in the middle of nowhere & the driver gets out and abandons everyone! Dreams are strange products of the imagination!

Josef Schiltz

I usually put it down to having a lot of head traffic between the ears and the traffic cop is not always there. I've had to learn to edit doing stuff into manageable amounts these days because I am just older and prone to tiring than I used to be and those types of dreams are diminishing. I got far more of those dreams when I was a caregiver 24/7. They may have been about the mind sorting out and dealing with the reality of having self-determination disempowered and the dreams disappearing is acceptance that some things are just not going to get achieved.

James Fish

Yes, pretty much. I think the traffic cops abandones my hesd a long time ago!

James Swann

It's the episode... WITH THE BIG SNEK!
