The Visitation is a very good story which only makes this a great season overall. The writer Eric Saward, who had previously been a writer for radio, submitted this story to the Doctor Who production team, and on the strength of it, the producer, John Nathan-Turner (JNT) offered him the job of script editor which Saward accepted. The Terileptils were a brand new race of aliens and this was the first time in Doctor Who that a form of animatronics were used to give the Terileptils actual facial movements, which made a change from usually having static monster heads with no movement at all. The main plus point in this story however is the character of Richard Mace. Saward gives him dialogue that, if you didn’t know, could have come from the pen of the master Who writer himself, the late, great Robert Holmes. Michael Robbins who played Mace had primarily been a comedic actor, starring ten years before this in a popular UK TV comedy sitcom called ‘On the Buses.’ Whilst Robbins performance in The Visitation isn’t strictly serious, he has a way with the dialogue that, even though he’s meant to be a highwayman, you can’t help but love his character. Finally, the end of the story, with the fire starting in the bakery in Pudding Lane (which causes the Great Fire of London to start that kills off the plague), ties up all the elements neatly and in a satisfying conclusion.
