3x5: Omega waking up back on the ship with Lula. She's been sleeping in that dark cell on Tantiss for nearly six months alone, and coming back to Pabu with her family must feel like a dream. I love her little cardigan too she wears in this ep. Crosshair keeping to himself with the others; however he has forged a solid bond with Omega and is as open as he can be with her, though is acting stubborn about speaking to Hunter in particular. This was never going to be easy. His hand is still acting up. And since you see episode 6 here Jess, you know that he was getting "conditioned" into becoming a Clone X Assassin but somehow rejected it. The trauma of that though is weighing heavily on him, as I personally believe of the guilt he feels deep down of his choices and actions with the Empire. There has been a cost to his time with the imps, and showing that he isn't quite able to do what he used to as the best sniper in the galaxy, is a big price for him to pay. Hunter isn't sure about giving him his rifle back, but what I love about Wrecker is that there is an honesty to him; he trusts Omega's judgement completely, so trusts Crosshair. That little moment where they all look down in sorrow remembering Tech, is tough. Tech and Wrecker in the last season tried to rescue Crosshair, but as we know that mission went south. Now Crosshair is back, but Tech is gone... Its understandable that Hunter wants to protect Omega by not having her coming along to Barton IV, but she reminds me of Ahsoka during the Citadel arc here, where Anakin didn't want her coming along, but she said it had to be her choice when to put herself in danger and that she couldn't be handled with kid gloves all the time. Same with Omega here. She may be small in stature (nor is she a Jedi), but she is increasingly getting able to handle herself and it was her (and Crosshair) that made it back to the group. She isn't that kid on Kamino in season 1 any more. Omega even manages to get a little smile out of Crosshair in the next scene - that's big hehe! And Wrecker giving him his armour back is a nice moment, though I would have loved an acknowlegement from Crosshair to Wrecker even with a nod - but he's a very closed off individual, and displays his thoughts through his actions; it as hard for him as it is for Hunter in particular with having him back. When Crosshair mentions "he started it" with the tiff with Hunter, it to me shows how mentally underdeveloped many clones are. We've seen this before when Hunter asks Omega about certain choices she does, and he usually sees things in another light after, suggesting to me that though they know about soldiering, life is more difficult to adjust to. Crosshair picking up Mayday and the other clone helmets to place them back as a memento mori, is heavy. This was the place where he broke and coming back here must be painful. Hunter watches him carefully. The last time they spoke, Crosshair told him they were superior to the regs, and now he is doing this for fallen regs... Hunter squaring up to Crosshair has been coming for years. Out of all the Bad Batch, these two must've bickered the most when they were growing up, and Hunter feels Crosshair betrayed them. To me there is a touch of bias in his thinking, as when Crosshair put them in danger in season 1, his chip was active and had been heavily tweaked so he was subservient to the Empire. At the end of the season when he had them back on Kamino, his chip was taken out and twice saved them and Omega in that finale. He just wanted them back with him as imperials. And he also warns them later that the Empire is after them as is brought up during this scene. Crosshair sniping back when Hunter prods him about what happened, both are angry at themselves and each other about their actions and guilt, and are trying to hurt each other. A big worm gets in the way before things get messy though! Wrecker saying "why is there always a giant monster" and this time I agree with him. I would have liked a bit more dialogue instead of having to see off this beastie. HOWEVER, with the way Hunter was butting heads with Crosshair here, I don't think anything he might have said, would have enabled Hunter to trust him yet. Hence why seeing him back in action with him and the crew, and helping save his life is a big moment, as it tells him that Crosshair is not the same person they left on Kamino, which is then followed through on by the conversation as they board back on the ship and you can feel the guilt and probably self-loathing Crosshair has about all his wrong choices. This is realistic and things will not be quite hunky dory just yet, it will take time to have Crosshair back gelled with the squad. I'm glad this you loved this episode Jess as they did balance out everything well and have some sort of partial resolution.

3x6 : I love the realisation when watching this episode, with its title "infiltration" that this isn't about our heroes infiltrating to do some good. No, its the Empire coming for them and showing how dangerous these Clone X assassins are. It is a sick outfit Rex is wearing. As if he couldn't get any cooler, they put him in a poncho! It makes sense too as it hides his 501st armour underneath for covert ops like this, and if things do kick off, like they do here, he is protected. Good to see senators Chuchi and Singh back, and there is some subtle references to Palpatine being scared of people uniting against him. While I never actually think of Darth Sidious being scared of anything, one thing he would be concerned about, is losing power (something he references in Revenge Of The Sith at the opera scene with Anakin when speaking of his master Darth Plagueis), hence why the Empire ramps up militarisation to keep controlled worlds in check. And then there is the Death Star too, and Project Necromancer in case his body perishes and what they are seeking Omega for. Before they can delve more deeply into it though, the assassin comes for them. Rex is a boss as always and they manage to stun him before taking him back to their base on Teth (which you saw all the way back in the Clone Wars movie Jess, when Ahsoka and Anakin climb that cliff-face to get Stinky. It was also in the Ahsoka series recently when she is in purgatory and wakens up as her younger self in the clone war). I love Omega mimicking Crosshair on the ship. We've seen her do that with the others, but she's never spent time with Crosshair before now, so is trying to emulate and learn from him also. Its rather sweet. Also love Echo telling Omega to keep the other clones in line. She's more mature than many of them it seems! :D Howzer going in hard on Crosshair. Understandable since many of his clones got killed by the Empire that defected with him from Ryloth. I like Hunter sticking up for him though telling Howzer to back down. They learn about the experiments on M-count stuff (though not the details yet) and Crosshair tells them about the Clone X programme, and what Hemlock is doing to clones on Tantiss. Hearing how twisted that clone assassin was in his line delivery shows how messed up they must now be to become this. It kind of reminds me of how some Inquisitors get made later, through torture until they break their psyche. Clone X2 (is the name the community have given this one who is causing them all grief) is damn good at his job and has our heroes on the run. Then backup arrives for him bringing everyone into danger. Good to see the clone commander who we all know, back in that final shot! Yes this is a two-parter and I believe was aired together like the first three episodes of the season were. Looking forward to the resolution next week!

Yeah, this season kicked up a notch. These two episodes are superb. Start with the first one. It is nice to start with Omega waking up holding Lula in her nice little nook on the Marauder rather than the sad and drab room on Tantiss. Though in terms of sad and drab bedrooms, I’m not one to talk. I love your joy of seeing AZI and Batcher. Then when Echo stops by it’s perfect. Well, no, it would be perfect if Tech was still alive, that aside, your enthusiasm is really lovely, and I’ll stop raining on the parade. Perfectly understandable that Hunter is slow to welcome Crosshair back. Contrast to Wrecker being a lump of sugar by saying that if Omega is vouching for Crosshair, that’s more than enough for Wrecker, especially as you do recall correctly that he expressed that he missed Crosshair back in season one. You are correct that it is a shame that we never see Crosshair being informed of Tech’s death. And whilst, as you say, he likely would not have an outwardly emotional reaction, you do see when they mention Tech being dead, a rather solemn expression crosses Crosshair’s features, telling us that his brother’s death hurts him. Lovely how you clocked the return to the outpost. So lovely to see your reaction to Wrecker giving Crosshair his old bad batch armor. Likewise, a damn fine moment to see Crosshair in the old bad batch armor again. Slightly funny moment where you see him tugging at it a mite, as if thinking, “It’s a little tight across the chest.” I stick up for Crosshair when he reasonably defends not knowing certain things saying the Empire was hardly likely to give him mission briefings. It gets you right in the heart seeing the discarded helmet of Mayday, complete with that French horn playing those notes. I love how you knew Crosshair would do what he did with the helmets. Tellingly, though Hunter is trying to get Crosshair to shoot straight, he sees that moment, and never really touches on that; knowing that if Crosshair is going to talk about that, he’ll talk about it, and Hunter won’t force that issue. It is healthy for both of them to vent their frustrations. The one that Crosshair says about Hunter being angry that Omega escaped with Crosshair’s help, not Hunter’s, he might be right about that on some level, and I think Hunter needed to hear that. I share how you liked how we hash things out with the “Baby steps, Bob, baby steps” energy. We put a hold on the hashing it out to deal with them damn snow wyrms. You hate ‘em, right? I hate ‘em myself. The energy of dealing with the snow wyrms would feel like the old days of this show, yet the fun is muted. It is like how you mentioned the hole following Tech’s death. They all come through. LOVED you cracking up over Echo’s comment of Crosshair and Hunter’s tiff being sans blood this time. Made me comment, “...Perhaps you could elaborate on that one?” Though not entirely patched up, nice to see progress made. Just as lovely it is to see you express the desire for our heroes to free all those trapped on Tantiss. The second episode is tense and aired simultaneously with the next one. Nice to see Senator Singh, and Claire-Bot, sorry GS-8 again. It is fantastic to see how Singh and Chuchi forming to come together under the common interests after being on opposite sides during the war. Once again, fantastic reactions to Rex being goddamn amazing. Not surprising, but always impressive, like you said, Jess. The assassin getting gottity-got got as you put it, now leads to Scorch bringing in the big guns by activating Tech to join the hunt. Oh, sorry, er, uh, the unnamed clone assassin with the designation of, uh, have it for you in a moment, uh, the, X2. Not Tech. Who said anything about Tech? I didn’t say anything about Tech. X2 is not Tech. I mean he’s so OBVIOUSLY Tech just at a glance. A blind man could tell you that one. And it unites the fans in anger against Filoni as for him to do such a thing is SICK! HE’S A SICK MAN!! WHY WOULD HE DO THIS TO- I'm just fucking with ya, Jess. OF COURSE X2 IS NOT FUCKING Tech. You try telling that to the NUMEROUS fans who held onto that theory for MONTHS. They would NOT shut the FUCK UP about it. Chrissake. Sorry, I’m going to vent about that for a hot second. I will say, your words you spoke about Tech, appreciated that, Jess. It is tense when Rex and the boys see Omega on the puck, leading to our heroes getting called in. I share your assessment of Howzer in that given his experience, his anger and mistrust toward Crosshair makes sense. Though I love Hunter sticks up for him, and I love how Crosshair has the “Believe whatever you want. I’m telling you the goddamn truth.” energy. Now the clones know that the Empire seeks Omega for her midichlorian count, though they don’t know what that is. Not helped by them using the codeword of M-count, which this area is where Disney are cowards about the word does work in a story perspective. Though if I remember the prequels correctly, only the Jedi ever actually talked about midichlorians, hinting that the galaxy at large does not really know about that. As I recall, the Emperor is the only other character who mentions them when he beguiles Anakin with the Tragedy of Darth Plagueis the Wise. X2 shows up and starts fucking shit up. Sad to see Fireball get killed. I know your concern about Batcher is great. Made worse by Rocco going through medical problems that you mentioned. I fully understand where you’re coming from, particularly as I VIVIDLY remember your Midnight Mass reactions, and that one Fear the Walking Dead reaction. To end on Wolffe is great, making a man say, “Good to see you Wolffe.” This two-parter, which you said you’d see the concluding half shortly after, was most intense when they dropped. I think that was around what would have been Papa’s, that’s my dad’s dad, nintey-third birthday. It was a night seeing that two-parter. I look forward to your reaction to the concluding half, and your reaction to the next few episodes. Until then, thank you for the lovely Bad Batch reactions today, Jess, they were wonderful.

It does the heart good to see that opening shot of Omega with Lula. Crosshair always was a more solitary sort. I still imagine he and Tech got along well for that reason. Considering I’m goddamn stubborn beyond belief, I’m sympathetic to Crosshair and his attitude toward speaking to Hunter. It hurts seeing his hand shaking. The guilt and trauma’s likely having a day or two. The honesty from Wrecker with his, “We trust the kid? Then I trust Crosshair.” energy. That was a sob that night when they bowed their heads for Tech. The situation is comparable to Ahsoka with the citadel. The batch is going to have strong big brother energy, even if Omega points out they are the little brothers, getting a smile from Crosshair. In terms of siblings, I’m the baby, so I have no younger siblings. There are my younger cousins, which my brother describes he and I as being quasi uncles in that regard, so ultimately, I do relate to everyone in this one. Crosshair in that damn fine armor is a picture. The “He started it” moment, well, they are brothers. Everyone who has a sibling regresses like that once or twice. The funnier times are when you get told, “You take that back!” in a rather petulant tone, and you call your sibling out by laughing and asking, “Sorry, “Take that back”? What are you, eleven?” God, does that bit with Mayday and the others’ helmets get you. Gets Hunter too and he doesn’t even know the story. Crosshair and Hunter both are letting their arguments be influenced by letting their personal feelings get in the way, as you note. Love Wrecker speaking for the audience, and yourself in this instance, with the snow wyrms. Though it does force them into action and they work together which better kicks the ball rolling better than words would have. Not all patched up, but progress. Good to see Jess love the episode as she did.

Good note about the title. You know Rex, he keeps getting better and better, and with continuous good looks. Still love his Endor look. Whilst not fear, yeah, the Emperor would have concern about losing his power. There’s the mentality: One system stands against him, then they all might stand against him. They do outnumber the Empire, and the Emperor would prefer it if they don’t figure that out. After all, although he can easily destroy everyone with ease, as he tells Darth Vader, he does not wish to rule over a galaxy of corpses. Remarkably, this means that the Emperor shows more restraint and pragmatism than the Targaryens, go figure that one. Omega parroting her brothers is always adorable. You can tell Hunter isn’t too happy that she’s imitating Crosshair, yet you get the sense that he’s fighting a smile or two. If nothing else, he’s just happy to have her back. Howzer’s anger makes sense. I wouldn’t help if I was Crosshair, as I’d probably say something like, “My sincere apologies for being knocked out and completely unconscious the entire ride to Tantiss. How silly of me.” Great to see our heroes gradually learn about the midichlorian counts and how it pertains to Project Necromancer, plus Hemlock’s other projects with the clone-X program. Frightening how that one clone has the blood of Kali going through his veins. Knew you’d love seeing Wolffe again. This episode and the one following dropped at once, yes.

"If Echo was just here, it would be a perfect episode." Well, hold that thought. Absolutely the right decision to devote an entire episode to hashing out the complicated feelings of Crosshair rejoining the group, no matter how much we know he genuinely regrets everything. And it's especially nice that they have the confidence in the audience to never once explicitly reference Crosshair's past with this place and trust that we'll remember and understand his reactions to things like those helmets. Dee really outdoes himself here, having to play all sides of this hugely complicated emotional soup, and if one more clone showed up his head might have exploded. And Wrecker probably speaks for a lot of fans across all of Star Wars at this moment, "Why is there always a giant monster?" With the arrival of this new bad guy, who I'll just go ahead and call CX-2 since it's not like that's any kind of spoiler, I need to point out that what I'm saying now is simply a report of my thought process at the time this episode was released, and doesn't necessarily have any bearing on what happens later. There were naturally a whole bunch of people with different theories of who was under the mask, with the most popular being Tech. I was still thinking Tech was alive, but didn't buy this idea for a second, for pretty much the same reason I never thought the masked bad guy in Ahsoka might be Ezra: with this being the final season, it seemed hugely unlikely that they'd have enough time in the remaining nine episodes to properly cover the Batch learning it's him, rescuing him, deprogramming him, and dealing with his guilt over what he'd done while brainwashed, all on top of wrapping up everything else they needed to. And speaking of that guy in Ahsoka, he'd also introduced us to the idea that the franchise was now perfectly willing to spend multiple episodes building up a mysterious masked figure, only to anticlimactically kill them without ever revealing any kind of secret identity, so I was already starting to prepare myself for how that might happen here (I was even kind of expecting it in The Acolyte too). So you'll see soon enough how much that hit it.

Two references to upcoming '80s reactions so close together. I guess the sequel has it in everyone's heads anyway.

Yeah, that was great how Jess spoke of dear Echo, and he then appeared. I remember how the return to the outpost episode dropped by itself, and yes, it is absolutely the right move to dedicate the episode to the baby steps hashing things out. The writing does show great intelligence and trust in its audience of remembering the outpost episode, and the events therein. As I said, I love how Hunter sees that moment with Crosshair and the helmets, how he recognizes something happened, and he chooses to not pry too deeply on that specifically. Likewise, the writing is great how they give equal balance to everyone’s views on Crosshair’s return, and they have that thing of even if you don’t agree with everyone and what they say or do, you get completely where they’re coming from. Dee really does outdo himself here, “having to play all sides of this hugely complicated emotional soup” as you put it. I’d say Wrecker speaks for me more with the repetition of the giant monsters. You no doubt saw my venting about the theories of X2. I am going to say thank you for not buying into the idea that X2 was Tech, somehow returned, even if you had the idea that Tech was still alive. Part of my frustration is that for me, there was no question about Tech being dead. You don’t hit people with that hard of a death scene otherwise. The one exception to the rule is Spock, and even there: One, it wasn’t fully planned out right away. Second, it takes two whole movies until Spock is alive and back to his old self again, and it’s an arduous process the whole time, and there is great cost to balance the equation. Thirdly, the Wrath of Khan scene STILL hurts beyond belief even with the knowledge that Spock comes back. With Tech, there was never any doubt for me. Again, the way the shot of the rail car falling was framed, I maintain that was put in precisely to remove ambiguity. You mention about how there aren’t enough episodes to properly dive into it if that’s what they were going to do, I’ll speak more on that later, as I had a similar thought that I yelled to some people.
