"Thou shalt get distracted by bullshit every goddamn time." Just about every reactor who's played the games points this out as a sign that the crew are definitely fans themselves. The Gulper is such a supremely fucked up creation, something you've truly never seen before that gives this setting its own identity apart from every other post-apocalypse story. And you can practically hear Ella thinking "I am NOT getting eaten again!" She and Walton play incredibly well off each other and I'd love to see them in more stuff together, maybe with a reversed dynamic (just check out the Sweetpea trailer to see how good she could be at it). Regarding Michael Emerson, Maxxxine has an extremely creepy scene about how these prop heads are made, and if it's anything like how they're still done he deserves a paycheck for all its appearances. Also very nice to see more of Cooper's human life, though it's a bit weird the show tries to play his being married to a black woman as a twist when we've already seen his clearly not entirely white daughter. The scene with Maximus and the caps is a lot funnier to fans, as apparently in most of the games even a single bullet costs more than one cap. Loved that just like me you immediately thought of CJ's woot canaw, and at least he didn't need to go full Fantine. On my first viewing I didn't bother remembering any of the bullies so the early scenes with Thaddeus just came off as him getting drunk with power, though luckily the part where Thaddeus reveals the reason behind it got me to catch on. Your getting so attached to Norm is maybe my favorite part of these so far. No one saw this kind of performance coming from Moises Arias after he'd mostly done Disney sitcoms before this, which helps the story quite a bit as you truly have no idea how far he'll go. I'm a bit surprised he didn't try telling Blind Al there's cocaine out in the Wasteland; that would probably get her off his back completely. And I would kill a man to actually see these guys try to integrate the raiders into their society. "This is the cornfield, and it's perfectly splendid."

Three episodes in and this continues to be an interesting show. Still remains great how our protagonist triangle is comprised of people who will show the world that they can get ahead. The question of Michael’s paycheck: It doth raise the question of does Michael still earn the bread for simply being the decapitated head. If so, I’m not even mad, that’s amazing. Love the scene of the Ghoul dunking Lucy in the water, and how he brings up the studies of torture. The Ghoul is of course one hundred percent correct that for the purpose of gathering information, torture is ineffective as shit. “Under torture you are as if under the dominion of those grasses that produce visions. Everything you have heard told, everything you have read returns to your mind, as if you were being transported, not toward heaven, but toward hell. Under torture you say not only what the inquisitor wants, but also what you imagine might please him, because a bond (this, truly, diabolical) is established between you and him.” as has been said. The Ghoul espouses that he concurs with such studies about the ineffectiveness of torture, which is why he does not consider himself part of those groups of men who believe they can produce the truth with white-hot iron. Love how you clocked how Lucy was not being tortured and instead was of “the bait variety”, as you put it. Indeed yes, she is the proverbial goat all ready to go for our dear old Betty to feast upon. Sidenote, you say it’s difficult to refer to the Ghoul by the name “Cooper” with Kyle playing a separate character. Wouldn’t know, I see Kyle, my first instinct is to call him Jeffrey. Or Paul, depending on if I’m in a sci-fi mood. But more often than not, Jeffrey. That creature did have a memorable Nickelodeon look, loved that deep-cut reference by the way, Jess. Sucks for the Ghoul for him to lose his beauty serum/asthma medication. The dynamic between Lucy and the Ghoul is great. How Lucy is trying to appeal to the golden rule, whereas the Ghoul is a veteran gamer who is utterly SICK of such bullshit. My mind of course instantly recalls a different golden rule espoused by my favorite Disney Villain, and favorite Disney character, period: “Whoever has the gold makes the rules.” It is the theme of is Lucy going to retain her pluck, especially when inevitably, she’ll have to resort to violence, possibly murder. No worries on continuously mentioning how that’s a particularly favorite aspect of post-apocalyptic stories. My favorite show is M*A*S*H. One of the big things of that is people who are not soldiers far from home during war. The themes of how you retain your humanity and sanity, how do you retain who you were before, and although you know you’re going to come out of the experience irrevocably changed, what that ultimately looks like is a separate question. So, it’s fine, Jess, you’re in good company of loving such a thing in post-apocalyptic stories. Maximus is going through it, though now he’s got one of his old bullies stuck with him. It’s very human how after indulging in a bit of childish revenge, he hears his squire’s story and softens. Then they work together to take out the monster in a great moment. I was dancing alone to the Glenn Miller. Good to see you did the same. Mom loves big band. Dad always REALLY loved big band. Naturally, my brother and I would pick up the love for it as well. Now to your dear Norm. Love how he shrugs off the “Lacks enthusiasm” label when asked did he know about it by responding with a “No, but that tracks.” response. It is a moral conundrum of what to do with the raiders, and like you said, such a thing pops up a lot in these stories. The difficult thing of what’s perhaps morally right is not necessarily where the smart money is. Certainly, the high-ups aren’t going for any smart money. That whole meeting felt like retail bigwigs, the Jedi horseshit, meets the Yippie mentality of giving the finger to anyone over thirty, generically hating the American establishment, dropping out, and getting high, and just generally how the progressive movement got painted for so many years. You know: People passing out daisies to soldiers and trying to levitate the Pentagon. Not helping from the sound of it that calling up the other high-ups of the vaults doesn’t seem to go to well. Then again, I suppose it is expected when old Dimitri gets irate when such a call is not sociable and/or friendly in nature. Never mind the fact that if it wasn’t a friendly call, he probably wouldn’t even get it. Norm is NOT happy. The question is what he’ll do about that, which I don’t know as I’ve not seen past this episode. The Ghoul shows that by shooting the sign that he’s sorting out some deep personal issues. Makes sense, given the revelation at the end. I do love the flashbacks with the Ghoul and his wife. They have a good chemistry. Sidenote about the Lavender business. Knowing how atrociously picky my palate is, I doubt very much that I’d go for Lavender. Then again, a man does get yelled at for being a freak, simply because he loves anchovies on a pizza. Nice to hear you quite like Lavender though. Just as it is nice that you are enjoying this show. I am as well, and I look forward to more. Thank you for the lovely reaction, Jess.

Recalling my Knights of the Old Republic days, that one wise old woman would definitely have words to say about that one golden rule. My own joke is, “I know the feeling well: You show up on a planet just to look for a map, and you end up fucking dragged into a goddamn familial squabble amongst the Wookies.” That gulper looked gnarly. Walton and Ella are having a good dynamic. In terms of the dynamic being reversed, I could see Ella bringing some of that Jinx energy. If the process is anything like how they usually make casts out of heads, it’s certainly messy. I like Casper Van Dien describe how when they did when he worked on Sleepy Hollow how they pile on so much plaster that “any moment it feels like they’re going to stick two straws up your nose and SUCK your brains out.” Not entirely sure if the twist about the Ghoul being married to a black woman is itself the twist. Rather that they are married, openly it seems, and judging by the aesthetic feeling very much that of the fifties given the mention of the Blacklist, it feels like it’s silently saying the before time is far into the future, presumably. Hopefully, the place Maximus went to wasn’t Dr. Christian Szell’s Dentistry, complete with the slogan, “Don’t panic, it’s safe!” Similar thing of I forgot the precise bully, though I read it less as Maximus drunk with power and more he’s seeing how far he can push the guy. Love the scene Thaddeus had. I remember Moises from the Disney Channel days, did a double take when that registered, saying, “Wait, that’s him!? HO-LY SHIT!!” Shared sentiment of loving how Jess is loving Norm. I assume because of said Disney Channel days, that’s why he doesn’t think to go the cocaine route with Blind Al as Disney is VERY STRICT about that. And you can’t get around it by saying for instance, “Bolivian Marching Powder” as they know all the slang terms. They have a list! Even snowboarding. Even disco dust. White Girl, Interrupted. Even Forrest Bump. Booger sugar. You wouldn’t even try powdered go-nuts. Hence when asked, “Do you want to build a snowman?” the answer is stuck being, “Yes! But I CAN’T!” You mention the “perfectly splendid” route. I wouldn’t say no to that, though I do remember that drinking game of take a shot every time that little girl said that. Made me sound like Joe Pesci when the kid started milking that later in the series by saying, “And it’ll be just...” drawing it out, and I pointed to the screen, “DON’T say it!!” Good times.

Boy, the way Glenn Miller played, huh? Lucy's story occasionally makes me think of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, where their idea for how to make such a seemingly one note heroic character interesting was to throw him into a morally murky '70s political conspiracy movie and watch him forcibly yank it all to his own viewpoint. And it's still a popular choice for the best MCU movie to show how good an idea that was. Funny you bring up Dr. Strangelove, as I recently started intending to bring it up in a certain upcoming reaction, regarding another movie where the title character doesn't really play that big a role, but still makes such an impression that you never question the movie being named after them.
