The Hickory Hideout fans are really feasting with this one. My biggest concern going into this show is that it would try to give Agatha the Deckard Shaw treatment, where now that she's a main character it suddenly turns out she's a super nice person and all the bad things she did were goofy misunderstandings. So it was a blast seeing this episode thoroughly put that to bed. And it was also nice to see the rest of the coven gets to have their own character rather than just being a collective "Kathryn's straight man." Of course, Patti LuPone is the big standout here, having apparently looked into a dying star at some point. It's been revealed that they really wanted Miriam Margolyes for a role but she turned it down, and assuming it's not someone we haven't met yet, Lilia is easily most likely that role, and I'm quite happy they were still able to get such a big name for it who fits perfectly. Disney actually included Teen's identity in the marketing, and assuming it's not just misdirection, I have no idea what they were thinking. Joe Locke also gets to show more personality here than in the first episode, being much more of an awkward geek than you'd expect while still managing to not feel at all like his Heartstoppers character (speaking of, beautiful to see the show go out of its way to reveal he's gay, despite it apparently having nothing to do with the show's story, for which I can only assume the dipshits controlling Inside Out 2 weren't involved). And of course I love getting more of Sharon, even if it's still pretty hard to not think of the whole "Is assaulting multiple women really a crime if he's a super nice guy otherwise?" thing whenever I see Debra Jo Rupp. Also kind of weird they killed her husband, since Fred Melamed is still alive and such a fun presence, and I just don't yet see why they'd bother to do it when he could just be said to be staying home. Having read Golem100, I'm a bit triggered at seeing a bunch of kooky middle-aged ladies singing in a circle, but quickly got over it because the song is a certified banger that it was no surprise has been all over social media the last few days. I have no idea what's to come as we ease on down, ease on down the road, and that's the most exciting position to be in while watching a TV show.

Forgot to mention in the first episode’s reaction that I am loving the color coordination game you are excelling at with the purple. I say you should go all out for the finale with a Missy meets Mister Glass type outfit. Of course, any fashion choice is up to you, Jess. I don’t mean to push anything. If I overstep my bounds, just tell me. Fair strategy by the way of rewatching the premiere whilst making dinner the night after you filmed the reactions. Now to the putting the band back together episode. Quite a band it is. Like you said, they are all established and shine brightly very quickly. All with fierce fucking looks too. And of the band, there is the cast member of the new MCU cast that I was most GLEEFULLY anticipating, and that is the gloriously wonderful legend of theatre, Patti LuPone, here playing Lilia. Seeing Patti as Lilia in this is a moment where I just stop being manly for a minute. I sounded like a teenage girl at a boy band concert, yelling with pure joy, “GODDAMN IT!!! PATTI!!! FUCKING!!! LUPONE!!!” The excitement is strong on this one. And already, I LIVE for Patti as Lilia. Agatha, Lilia, and Sharon are top tier for me at the moment. Speaking of Sharon, I had heard that Debra Jo Rupp would have a starring role, and I was curious how that would happen. Loved how it happened, though I was sorry to hear that Sharon’s husband died, which means no more of the talented and eminently underrated Fred Melamed. Damn shame. Sharon likely did take the place of April, (I, too, did not catch a name, hence my calling her by her Parks and Rec character,) and I would imagine that April will be none too happy about being left out. Sharon being part of the circle and the drug reference, yes, that is a deliberate That 70’s Show joke. Speaking of deliberate jokes, when Lilia’s accused of pitchy singing, and how she gets particularly salty about it, you KNOW that’s a deliberate joke. The show knows EXACTLY what it’s doing there. In between appreciating the joke, I took it all in, and got defensive, saying, “Pump your brakes there, candle witch! The woman whose singing you are besmirching, that lady’s a goddamn national treasure!” Bringing us to the topic of the musical numbers. That was over a year and a half ago that it got leaked that there would be musical numbers in this show, and when I heard that, I said, “Wait. The Agatha show is going to have the witches taking part in musical numbers? And Patti is going to be part of the cast, and by extension, said musical numbers? ...Thank you, God.” Already we have a damn good number, and you and I had a shared reaction to just vibing with it. It was glorious. To address your one observation, yes, there is far more of a comedic edge to this episode. The whole vibe of this feels like The Witches of Eastwick, Beetlejuice, and Hocus Pocus all wrapped up in one glorious camp package. Naturally, I’m living for it. So are you, though there was the horror of the Salem Seven at the end. All very unsettling and/or terrifying, says you. Beauteous, says I. Likewise, the crow was ominous, and gave you feelings that the Owls are not what they seem. I got more of a Damien Omen II vibe myself. There is the mystery of the boy. I may or may not know... something as the internet is a mite loud, though I’ve not delved into anything much about it. Since he’s under what seems to be the spell of Tarantino name censoring, for the time being, I’ll just call him Tobias. There is the other matter you brought up. I am neither confirming nor denying anything about the son of Detective Agnes, though the name is a familiar one. And in answer to the question of how many people abandoned Westview, well, evidently, there have been a few statements saying that the population did see a drastic plummet in numbers, which considering what the Scarlet Witch did, hard to blame the people taking a powder. And they’ve set up the spot condemning the Scarlet Witch, which apparently has angered her hardcore fans. I hear that response, and say, “Yes. Very sad. Anyway!” So, two episodes down, and this show is DELIGHTFUL as all hell. Now we join the witches on the journey down the road. Well, first there is the question of are we witchy enough to partake. To answer that: You are definitely witchy enough, Jess. I know I am. My family and my old school friends will vouch for that. So, I look forward to more witchy times sharing this show with you this spooky season, Jess, and thank you for the fun and delightful reactions thus far.

I'm enough not into keeping up with live theater stars to only really take interest in Patti LuPone after seeing her as Yellow Diamond. And ever since, she's killed it in everything I've seen. I was especially impressed in Pose, where she manages to hit the perfect note of making the character clearly despicable but also really fun to watch in the time she's onscreen. Elizabeth Olsen has been talking lately about being open to return to the MCU, so I have a bit of a suspicion that graffitied foundation's resemblance to the end of Carrie isn't a coincidence. Anyone who's seen the movie, you know.

Yeah, I’m a big theatre nerd. Hearing Patti being cast in this was such a thrill. I just really want to see her ham it up to glorious campy levels and with killer musical numbers too. I’m really excited about that. I’ve not seen Pose, but I can VERY easily buy Patti being brilliant at where she manages to hit the perfect note of making the character clearly despicable but also really fun to watch in the time she's onscreen. There was quite a bit of Carrie in the graffitied foundation, so that could go either way.

Well, that always is a pet-peeve of mine when the previous villain becomes a main character and/or joins the side of good, that they become such a nice person. It’s why I love Iago in the last Aladdin film where even though he’s now with the good guys, he still remains his usual grouchy self. Kathryn is keeping strong villainous energy strong, and I live for it. The other members of the coven I live for as well. Patti especially, and I goddamn near had a stroke hearing she was going to be in this, and I squealed up a storm. Assuming they weren’t wanting Miriam for a character we have yet to meet, Lilia does seem the likely character Marvel courted her for. She would have been amazing. Seeing as we get Patti, I’m not complaining. I heard something about Disney saying... something about the boy, who again, I’m just calling him Tobias for now. Cannot resist the Sweeney Todd references. I’m guessing they’re trying to recreate the Monica Rambeau mystery when that got leaked, though who knows? I remember you talked about liking the non-binary representation in Tales of the Empire. I had a similar response here to the reveal that Tobias is gay. How it’s brought up very casually, and even Agatha, villainous gadfly that she is, never makes much of a thing of it. Great to have more of Debra as Sharon. Shared dismay of the killing Fred’s character, though he did more or less just disappear after his sole appearance in the first episode of WandaVision, which I assume was due to covid restrictions which also kept Kat Dennings from having the bigger role in the final episodes. My best guess on that is that they didn’t want further confusion as to where he was during WandaVision’s end, and decided it was better to kill the character off, when like you said, they could have easily just said he stayed behind at home, or was say out of town on business. I’d have been happy with more Fred as he is eminently underrated. I need that song, and the soundtrack for this show somewhere down the line for my ipod. We are left with the uncertainty as we ease on down, ease on down the road, though I surmise no Richard Pryor. And yes, there is immense excitement about what we have to look forward to.

Seeing as Agatha definitely had a serious thing with Aubrey Plaza, it only makes sense she would stay out of the subject.

Ryan

She plays a stand-in for Leona Helmsley, an outwardly friendly real estate mogul who's actually a vicious slumlord out to destroy the gay community who have nowhere else to go.

Jess, you really need to avoid the YouTube comments.

Thomas Corp

Yeah, I’ve been seeing a few spoilery comments. Well, I haven’t read them in great detail, but I see them, register their spoilery nature, and about face. Probably be a good idea for Jess to avoid youtube’s comments section for this show.
