"Goodness me! So, there are five of me now!", The 1st Doctor, "The Five Doctors" This is such an important and fun story that I decided to rewatch the full story before getting to your reaction. Actually, I decided to watch it with a commentary track (there are three available). I selected the one with the New Who people - all big Classic Who fans - Phil Collinson, David Tennant, and Helen Raynor who had just come in from filming "Gridlock" for Season 3 (Helen had been working on her Dalek episodes from that season) to record their commentary. If anyone has a copy of this commentary I would recommend it. That commentary was great fun - they had all seen the story when it was originally broadcast in the UK (except for David who had arranged to get it recorded off-air on video from a neighbor) and there were lots of fan memories of watching the show. Phil mentioned that it had two of his favorite companions: Sarah Jane and Tegan - he has good taste. I'll probably watch the "Companions" commmentary (Carole Ann Ford, Nicholas Courtney, Elisabeth Sladen and Mark Strickson) in prep for next time. But, what a fun special! Obviously, they couldn't get Harnell but I think Richard Hurndall does a fine job portraying Hartnell's Doctor. The actor was spotted playing a role in the other BBC SF show "Blake's 7" and it was suggested he might be able to play the role. And lovely to see Carole Ann Ford again as Susan. "That's Colonel Crichton, my replacement.", "Ah. Yes, mine was pretty unpromising, too.", The Brigadier and the 2nd Doctor, "The Five Doctors" We love, love, love the 2nd Doctor! And the Brig! In the last story Tegan was cloaked up as a Yeti. And now the 2nd Doctor is also wearing a big fur "Yeti" coat. And I love that he ties his coat up with string. "You've had this place redecorated, haven't you? Hmm. Don't like it.", The 2nd Doctor, "The Five Doctors" I still recall your scowl when David's Doctor reprised this line (commenting about the 11th Doctor's TARDIS) in "The Day of the Doctor" without your knowing the history of the line. The line was originally the 2nd Doctor's commenting on the 3rd Doctor's TARDIS in "The Three Doctors". And as the script editor of "The Three Doctors", Terrance Dicks, would naturally have known it - and reprised the line in this story. And then Moffat recycled it for his multi-Doctor story. And the Brigadier's line: "Wonderful chap, all of them," is an altered version of his "The Three Doctors" line: "Wonderful chap, both of him". "No. No, you changed remember? You became all, er ...", "Teeth and curls?", Sarah Jane and the 3rd Doctor, "The Five Doctors" We love the 3rd Doctor too! And Bessie! And Sarah Jane! And K9! Sarah Jane was originally intended to be paired with the 4th Doctor and the Brig paired with the 3rd Doctor, but when Tom Baker decided not to appear the pairings were re-adjusted. And so we got the "Shada" shots inserted. Elisabeth was very disappointed in the show of her rolling down the slope - it really doesn't look very steep, does it? We get yet another Borusa regeneration! And it's only been since in "The Arc of Infinity" earlier in this season. This time he is played by Philip Latham. Also, neither Colin Baker nor Elspet Gray were available to reprise their roles. Only Paul Jerricho's Castellan remains. "Who to Rassilon's Tower would go, must choose below. No, no, no. Who unto Rassilon's Tower will go, must choose above, between, below.", "Are you in pain, Doctor?", The 2nd Doctor and the Brig, "The Five Doctors" The "above, between, below" was echoed in the 10th Doctor story "The Age of Steel" as the ways to infiltrate the conversion factory. We, Classic Who viewers, love these references. And I love the Brig's "Are you in pain, Doctor?" line. "Tegan, Tegan, Tegan. Humour him. You know, I sometimes used to get a little tetchy. Fortunately one mellows with age.", The 5th Doctor, "The Five Doctors"

This may just be my favorite reaction of yours ever, after looking forward to it for literal years. Every return appearance was exactly what I was hoping for. This was the first piece of Doctor Who I watched, years before the new series was announced, which in retrospect was about the worst thing I could have done. I figured it would give me the broadest possible look at the stuff in the show so I could then pick and choose which parts I wanted a closer look at first. But in practice it was just throwing me into the middle of all these characters I had no context for, with the show assuming I knew every bit of it, and if the show didn't already have a thriving online fan community to explain it all, I would have been totally screwed.

See, upon noticing your delightful little TARDIS necklace, my mild fear was somebody spoiled something for you about the special. Dummy me, I forgot that it’s known that it is the twentieth, hence you have the trinket for the occasion. Tis indeed a bit strange that you already saw the fiftieth nearly seven years ago now, and you saw the sixtieth specials when they aired last year. Shame that there’s no thirtieth or fortieth special to look forward to. Or if there is, I’m not remembering them. Who was off tv in ‘93. And I don’t remember when I was twelve there being a fortieth special, at least not on television and/or in the States. Ah well. Now to this SUPERBLY wonderful reaction. Just the scene of William as One and your reaction is sob inducing. Addressing how you said you felt stupid. First off, you say you should have expected this. Quite the opposite I should think, given your profession. I loved that you were not expecting this as it made your overwhelmingly beautiful joy all the better. Now, to be fair, you have seen The Five-ish Doctors. You say that you were made aware of the general idea of this specific story, which is a valid point. The warnings you got of needing the title blurred likely tip off there will be something big. But I also remember the blurring for the Judoon return. Meaning there is some precedent of blurring the title, so it would not be a guarantee that this would be The Five Doctors. Now you DID mention that it IS The Five Doctors, and we are in the middle of Five’s run, ergo you note that this specific story is something you should have started to expect sooner rather than later. I hear you say that, and concede, “...Well that, that is true. All right. I give you that one.” I still would not agree with you saying you were stupid, though I understand your thought process. Absurdly emotional to see Patrick and Jon as Two and Three again. And since William had sadly died, we have Richard Hurndall as One, who does indeed convey the spirit of William, and paved the way for the beauty of David Bradley having portrayed William and One both in the last decade and change. Tom as Four’s absence, as I understand was more because of burnout. I adored your reaction to each Doctor’s return. Tight spot they’re in, which my comment on that being, “They’re fucking Phantom Zoning the Doctors!!” I adored the reaction to the return of Bessie, the fine gentlemen of UNIT, Sarah Jane, and especially, I LOVED your reaction to Susan’s return. It did not sound weird at all to hear you describe your heart melting seeing Susan again. More bittersweet as now Carole is the last surviving cast member of the original main cast. Sarah Jane really should have listened to K-9, loved your commentary about that. Bringing us to the hilarity of the High Council recruiting the Master to save the Doctor, which yes, is about as absurd as the Gotham police hiring the Joker to save Batman from say Lex Luthor. I can understand the logic of not suspecting the Master not being behind the fuckery, as I doubt the Master would keep that to himself if he’s successfully put the Doctor in this serious of peril. As to the matter trusting him anymore than you can throw him: (even with a bad knee,) Oh, good God, don’t, never trust anyone. You could trust his rivalry with the Doctor, and thus, his desire to be the one to kill the Doctor. Using the analogy of the Joker, how he’s often of the feeling, “DON’T touch Bat-Brain! He’s MINE to kill!!” The Master would have the same mentality. Loved his outfit which served Evil Queen from Snow White meets Bela as Count Dracula vibes. He is working it, so who’s complaining, really? Unsurprisingly, you and the Doctor’s have a very hard time believing the Master. And for good reason as he seizes the opportunity to team up with the Cybermen to get to kill the Doctor. Good times, seeing the villains work together, yes? Other small notes. Nice NES sounding music accompanying the Cybermen. Quite surprisingly sweet to see your reaction to Turlough having a little artist moment, and that you loved that for him. And at the beginning of the reaction when you said, “Deep Breath” and how it wasn’t a deliberate Twelve reference. The way you clarified that is me. I say stuff like that, hear it as soon as I say it, and I clarify that such a joke, reference, pun was unintentional. Halfway through, and this is beautiful as all HELL, and already I’m chomping at the bit for next week. Until then, thank you for this BEAUTY of a reaction, Jess.

I know that of Doctor Who, there is the reaction Jess had to The Husbands of River Song, my favorite Doctor Who episode. That’s probably permanent for me of favorite Who reactions that Jess has had. And that is probably the reaction of the many that Jess has had that I have rewatched the most. Favorite altogether, that’s tougher. I tend to highlight favorites of fandom/series. For example: of the Star Wars animated shows, there are the entirety of those, with special fondness of the reactions to my favorite episodes. Andor’s the One Way Out episode. LOVED the Revenge of the Sith rewatch. Lots of movie reactions are great. One of my favorites there being the Home Alone 2 reaction, largely for how much Jess called out Kevin for being a little serial killer in the making. Hill House, there was the Shirley episode, and the Two Storms episode. All of Midnight Mass and The Fall of the House of Usher. There’s her reaction to the diner episode, my favorite episode of season one of The Sandman, and episodes three and five of season one of The Last of Us. And that’s just scratching the surface. I can see the thought process as to why you would think this would be good to see first before seeing anything else of Doctor Who. Like you said, you get thrown right into the middle of it all, albeit yes, a strong online community to help explain a few things. And it’s not like it’s difficult to just jump into the show with every new Doctor. I mean, they’re not going to say that a new season is completely newcomer friendly and then blindside you with one of the biggest villains of the franchise who hasn’t been fucking seen on the show in half a goddamn century. That would be silly.

There's a fantastic commentary by Terrence Dicks and Peter Davison, in which Dicks admits that he let a personal grudge he'd developed with Jon Pertwee influence him writing Three as "pigheaded and totally wrong" regarding the Master. And I have to imagine Jon was going through some very complicated emotions, working with a new Master after the death of his close friend Roger Delgado was what drove him to leave the show. I was pretty surprised Jess didn't comment at all on K9 being with Sarah Jane, which only makes sense if you've seen the failed pilot K9 and Company. I guess the sheer emotion of her unexpected return overrode any thought about that. And boy is this one not kind to her, with the notorious scene where she needs to be rescued from a gentle slope. Dicks says in the commentary "Couldn't they find any bloody cliffs in Wales?"

Like I suspect many others, I'd been very much looking forward to you reaching this one, and I enjoyed your reaction hugely. I'm so glad you have had the willingness and the stamina to go through the whole show - it means you get so much more out of a story like this, and we get so much more from your reaction. Looking forward to next week! Thank you so much as always for all you put into these. It'll be such an achievement when you're done, but so sad it will be over!

As I mentioned last week, I try to rewatch the reactions each week just before the next one is released. And rewatching this reaction with you again was absolutely delightful.
