I see that Secretariat has turned up . . . Oh! I mean the Myrka. Basically, the thing is just a pantomime horse with reptilian adornments. I'd love to see what Jess thinks of Peter's former role as Tristan Farnon. The Doctor is Tristan - pretty much - but brave and he carried a lot of his former role with him into the Doctor. I suspect that Peter's shorter hair is down to him reprising his former role in All Creatures Great and Small for a one-off Christmas special that he took part in between shooting schedules for Who. The cast and production crew were, in no way, happy within the shoot as there were many behind the scenes difficulties. Early in the production of the story, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher 🙁announced the 1983 United Kingdom general election. This created a sudden demand for BBC studio space and, as a result, the production schedule for the story unexpectedly lost two weeks. The cast were neither happy with JNT, or the director of the story, Pennant Roberts. Also, annoyingly, the Myrka's colour wasn't dry and kept smearing green over everything it touched.

Thanks as always for a great reaction. I guess that after the last story, this one had a lot to live up to! I think they felt that the return of old enemies might spike interest, but I'm pretty much on the same page as Jess in terms of not really gelling with this story. I like that there's a lot of humour in it, the situation they find themselves in & some duplicitous characters as well as some very interesting themes so it's not a complete write off! See you next time!

Not a fan favourite. The only attention grabber turned out to be it's biggest failure. Transparently two puppeteers in a costume, Then the amount of time to realize the whole thing was cut because Thatcher announced a surprise general election and their studio time was cut to release studio space for coverage. The thing that bugs me is that Michael Grade used these episodes and, in particular, the Myrka, in order to rubbish the entire series. Unusually, what I had to say about the man was censored in this comments thread. He is now a Tory peer. What a surprise!

Yes that totally doesn't surprise me! He never liked the show, being of the opinion that they should have spent their money producing more 'wholesome' content whatever that was meant to mean - probably the sort of stuff which hardly anyone watched!

His uncle had far more imagination than he ever did and it seems that Lew didn't understand much of what he passed for production. He just said to go ahead and make it. There is nothing to convince me that his nephew is anything but a failure. No matter what title he has, it just looks good on his resumé. Family idiot wouldn't look as good.

James Fish

Yes, clearly someone who was promoted above his station for who he knew, not what he knew.

Interesting that, when I went full throttle on what I thought of him, my comment was refused and deleted. Even here, we must - apparently - see that our words are phrased in the poetic and not given full vent and vitriol. The picture of him in his Lords regalia makes me want to chuck!

Whilst generally quite maligned as a story, I have fond memories of this. On a personal note, I watched this with my mum and sister not long after my Dad had separated from my mum and left the family home. Doctor Who was a connection to my Father, he introduced it and we it watched together from 1979 before he left in 1983. My Dad died last year, nearly 40 years to the day that he left the family home. So this season and the 5 Doctors in particular hold a special place in my heart.
