You did say you were going to be busy this past weekend, hence no apologies necessary, Jess, for this reaction being a bit later than usual. A whole ass mess is a fair description for this episode. Plenty to say, hence I’ll likely split my comments up. Start with your girl, Sylvie. It was a strong moment for her, when she prayed for God to give her the strength she needed to save Laurent. Even though she did not succeed, respect is given for her efforts in doing her damndest to save Laurent. Knew your reaction to poor Sylvie’s death was coming, your vicious anger toward Losang upon his saying that Sylvie’s faith was weak, likewise was anticipated. I got pretty pissed off about it myself, both my own anger, and just preemptively feeling your rage and lividity. It was particularly shared when Losang was going to use Sylvie recently walkerfied to bite Laurent. You said, “Are you kidding me? You SICK. FUCK.” and Fallou had that “What, bitch?” look on his face, love that comment that you made. Me, I was outraged and yelling, “Oh, fuck you! Fuck you! FUCK you!! You’re dying now, Buster!!” One silver lining is that in this life, Sylvie never learns of Emile’s betrayal. The heart breaks thinking about how she’d react upon reaching Heaven when she does learn the truth. One thing for sure, your love story with the cuteness couple is now a dead story, and I do apologize about that, Jess. The whole series has done a great job of exploring faith. What is faith? How do you define faith? What is doubt? This season is increasing that focus, and yes, this episode really tackles the matter via Losang. The look in your eyes when Losang espoused how Daryl is a man without faith, that look could have melted adamantium. I anticipated that. As you mentioned, you anticipate that I and other long-time viewers figured what your reaction would be there. I’ve remembered how that is something that has angered you in the past: how men of faith dismiss those who are not religious, and they declare they have no faith. As someone who was raised Catholic, it is a shared feeling, your anger at that. Simply because one does not subscribe to religion, it does not mean that they are devoid of faith. It simply manifests in different ways, what someone has faith in, likewise. Daryl was in NO MOOD to listen to Losang justify his villainy, and neither were you or I. I’d probably piss him off as Daryl has by being very doubting. Given my name, I fail to see how he would be surprised by that. Then again, Losang is so full of shit. Among other things, if he was really so sure of his righteousness, he wouldn’t have roofied Laurent for the ritual, nor would he say he’ll throw in the towel if the ritual is unsuccessful, last Hail Mary or not. He also shows stupidity with torturing Daryl as torturing a man don’t do shit. If you fucking beat a man long enough, he’ll tell you he started the goddamn Chicago Fire! Now, that don't necessarily make it fucking so! And Daryl, when asked where they are, I want him to say, “They’re on Dantooine.” Please, give me that once. I quite like how you are so fucking done with Losang, and I’m offering encouragement, “Use your aggressive feelings, Jess! Let the hate flow through you!” I have no objection to your naming Fallou as collectively all of our bestie. That’s agreeable. We do have now another love story. One I’m getting heavily invested in. I saw the spark between Daryl and Isabelle last year. Both Norman and Clémence are going above and beyond with this, making me just quietly sob, and inducing such a sweet reaction from you in that scene. Special shout-out to Clémence who next year makes twenty years since my formal introduction to her and her work. She has evolved very well as an actress and she is impressing the hell out of me. I do hope she and Daryl can get Laurent, and they and Carol, and Fallou, if he wants to, can get back to Daryl and Carol’s home.

Now to Carol, and by extension, Genet. I find Genet is rising the ranks of being one of the more fascinating villains in the universe of The Walking Dead. Anne Charrier, the actress who plays her, to the best of my recollection, I’ve not seen her in anything outside of this show, and she is making a very solid first impression throughout last season and this one. The flashback showing Genet being a janitor at the Louvre made me say, “I feel your pain, Madame.” Sort of like the episode of Tales, it recalls the beginning of the pandemic where you’re just going to work, doing your job, then rather out of the blue, world altering events happen, and the atmosphere at work just changes rather drastically. Nothing QUITE as dramatic as what happens to Genet here, though. The heart does break for her when seeing her husband’s death, and how she describes greater priority was given to the art, rather than the people. We see how Sabine has remained her steadfast ally. Even maintaining the first name basis with Genet, by calling her Marion. I like that name. Marion. The scene with her dealing with the man and the soup, love how you anticipated Genet saying, “Manger, bitch.”, before Genet gave that exact command, leading to you having a delightful laugh at that. And it shows how despite her psychopathy and villainy, Genet does have some genuine standards. Unsurprisingly, Carol, and yourself for that matter have little faith in Genet’s grand plan. Carol’s scene with Codron was great. She might have made more distance if not for Mr. Ed, as he knows the score with what show he’s in, like you said. Shame about Remy betraying Carol, and how he looks like he was bracing himself that Carol was going to hit him, and it looked like he wasn’t going to fight that. Carol did have a bold strategy of shooting straight with Genet prior to telling the lie that she is there to kill Daryl. It might have worked too, if not for Genet being sharp. And I appreciate the well-written villainy. Genet already would be suspicious of another American that she does not know appearing in France not too long after Daryl arrived. Her men would likely be fooled as they see Carol, and they see that the woman is a woman, a, how do you, housewife. Genet, of course knows better, and sees that Carol is, for real... a TIGER. Ergo, Genet knew that it would behoove her to keep a close watch on Carol, and her movements. And I think that Carol’s complete honesty shot herself in the foot. Genet sees what Carol looks like when telling the complete truth. When Carol then says about killing Daryl, and this is credit to Melissa with her acting, you see her slightly detach, as if she numbs herself so she can comfortably say that she wants to kill Daryl. Somewhat contradictory for a woman who has made extensive effort to track down and kill a man. Hence, I anticipated how Genet tricked Carol. You seemed more surprised. It is why it is a rule in life: Beware of one’s words. Genet intimates that she is agreeable to what Carol says she is after. She never once actually says that she believes that Carol speaks the truth about the desire to kill Daryl. So, she will allow Carol the opportunity to kill Daryl, just as promised, only in a much different manner than Carol hoped Genet would react. All fairness, I’m down for Genet bringing her crazy lady energy to the nest. Disrupt the plans of Losang and his Lady Macbeth. Fuck shit up there, and allow Daryl, Carol, and Isabelle to escape amidst the chaos and carnage. And if Losang and his aforementioned Lady Macbeth are killed at any point during the proceedings, well... Life has its little bonuses, does it not? Here’s hoping for both our sake that they are light on the needles. We shall see sooner rather than later, which is the benefit for you of the delayed reaction, that you don’t have to wait too long to see how this proceeds. The suspense has been eating away at me since Sunday. In any event, this reaction was completely superb, and well worth the wait, Jess, and I thank you for just how enjoyable it was.
