Whilst not an episode that I would rank as one of my favorites of the series, yes, despite its somewhat rocky start, it rights itself and ends up being better than you and I feared it would be. Said rocky start being sans Captain’s Log, which you noted, though that ultimately becomes rectified. Picard’s Captain’ Log doth provide copious comfort, hence I share your sentiments, Jess. Another occasion of one of our heroes falling head over heels in infatuation, a rather troubling trend that to be clear, the greater issue is more so the expeditious manner in which it consistently happens, like you said. One thing that helps here is that Marina is given the spotlight with Deanna being the lead of this episode, as I’m with you on loving when Deanna gets that time to shine. I’m aware of your aversion to the usual trope, and I like how you played the waiting game of would it be creepy here, or would it just be again a case of something just not being your cup of tea. Starting with being startled by the staring, and you asking is it romantic or creepy, made me answer, “...Yes?” and then you noted that possibility of it being both, and I laughed how we were on the same page. The writing for Ral is solid, and Matt McCoy plays it well. Bad vibes abounded with Ral, and it is done well. Shared reactions to Ral laying it on REAL goddamn THICK in his initial scenes with Deanna. You called him too intense, whereas I sounded like a chaperone, saying “All right, you, Sir, are getting too handsy. And we’ll have none of that, Mister. Separate. Now.” And then when he started undoing Deanna’s hair, and I IMMEDIATELY felt your reaction even before seeing it. Now seeing your fantastic reaction to that moment is exactly what I anticipated it would be. You asked both during and after the episode about what is it with Star Trek specifically where men seem to think it’s romantic to fuck up a woman’s fashionable hairstyle. There, I’m afraid you’ve got me, Jess, as I’m just as stumped as you are on that one. I do recall your past statements on the matter, and I know that if Ral tried that on you that you and your acrylics would ensure that he’d be left with empty bloody sockets where his eyes once were. I’m all for you keeping on harping on that. The question of why we lingered on the shot of Ral giving Deanna a foot massage for so long. I would assume because Quentin Tarantino took over directing duties, but I have no viable evidence to support that theory, beyond the aforementioned extraneous shot. It is well done how as the episode progresses how Ral shows how he is a very unscrupulous individual with manipulating the bidding war to his advantage. Pretty ballsy move to try and swindle the Predator by the way. It reaches high levels of being so completely fucking done with what a complete fuckface rodent he is when he tries to gaslight Deanna with his false equivalency with ethics. As Deanna notes, she is responsible for the ship, captain, and crew, and yes, sometimes has to use the advantage of her abilities to gain an edge, but it is for a greater good and safety. Whereas Ral is a horse of a different color, ethics-wise. As in, he ain’t got any. And to the surprise of no one, you kindly requested him to fuck all the way off following that scene, and the scene where he tried to fuck with Riker. Love how you loved Riker throwing it back at him. There was some STRONG Xanatos energy that Jonathan served in that scene, and I lived for it as well. Ral then sinks lower by working with the Ferengi fuckery. Said Ferengi fuckery already in play with poisoning the one poor gentleman who probably became afraid that Keyser Söze caught up to him. And there was the sudden needle jump scare, which was so fucking rude, KNEW you would feel the same. We were simpatico with our reactions there. Most satisfying when Deanna exposes Ral’s ass, and when he loses, loved your reactions to all of that. So loved how you were of the mind that Ral was not even owed the courtesy of a final farewell between him and Deanna, and how basically upon his saying that he was leaving, you essentially said, “Well... Bye.” Massive love and respect for how Deanna shoots Ral’s asinine sales pitch for her to run away with him to be his “conscience” (What in the holy FUCK does that even mean!?) by firmly saying her job is being the ship’s counselor. Your reaction to that was most wonderful, and my own comment to Ral was, “Yeah, I’m a bit rusty, but I believe the undercurrent of that statement translates to “Get fucked, you unctuous weasel.” meaning you need to put your big boy pants on and take the hit.” And sure, Ral doesn’t think it’ll be too bad for him in the long run, although I wonder if he’ll still maintain that bravado when doing insurance commercials. And Deanna never did get her chocolate sundae. Especially not with the Replicators being programmed for perfect health and nutrition. No wonder Riker does his own cooking. I’d be fucking driven up a goddamn wall over what the Replicators deem an acceptable amount of garlic in dishes. Then there was the strong showing of the bestie time with Geordi and Data. Loved how you were appreciative of Picard prioritizing the safety of Geordi and Data when entering the wormhole. Geordi showed how much of a complete fucking sweetheart he is by making the valiant effort to try to save the Ferengi from being stranded. Even if he did not succeed, I respect Geordi’s efforts there. Now to the sartorial portion of the comment. Nice to see that you liked the workout outfits that Beverly and Deanna wore during the scene that THOROUGHLY FAILED the Bechdel test. Marina sure as shit didn’t as she’s gone on record saying that not even all the money in the world would convince her to wear such an outfit ever again. And in said scene, I recoiled at how Deanna said she felt completely out of control, happy, terrified, and I noted in response, “Well... That just sounds completely God fucking awful, Deanna.” Loved how you expressed similar commentary all throughout the episode. And thus, a solid episode, that has been made better by just such a perfect reaction and analysis that you had, Jess. I appreciated it so much, thank you.

A stable wormhole to the Gamma Quadrant? Sounds great, unless it turns out that Quadrant is ruled by evil shapeshifters who draw the Federation into a years-long war where they can't trust anyone they see, and at the same time undermining a hugely tense detente between two species who just ended a vicious war. But what are the odds of all that happening? Boy, that has to be some kind of record for reaching a Metatron level of hatred. But no one wants to look like they're just obsessively paranoid about Lloyd Braun, so I'll just say that after losing out a major role last time, I'd imagine Marina was pretty happy with this one, and she and Matt McCoy play off each other very well in all different kinds of dynamics. But of course the big thing everyone remembers this episode for is the workout scene, and the show is impressively committed to the idea that the kind of outfits people were seeing at the time in Olivia Newton John videos would just get sillier in the future. This is another bit that was brilliantly spoofed in Lower Decks, with the two biggest, toughest guys in the crew doing this exact same workout in the same outfits. And quite impressive to see Marina actually show more flexibility than professional dancer Gates. An especially big guest cast this time with all the wormhole bidders, and the script does a great job balancing them all so we don't end up looking at anyone at the end and thinking "Why were you even here?" Though I don't know what they were thinking inviting the Predator to bid on the wormhole. He's clearly only dressed like that to fool Lloyd Braun! Serenity now! I also can't stop thinking about those Ferengi, who are totally screwed unless there happens to be a nearby planet where the locals have evolved exactly like primitive humans, allowing them to live like kings exploiting their labor, until another Starfleet ship that got to the Delta Quadrant a totally different way happens to bump into them on its journey back home even after a few years of travel, and finally bring them to justice. But what are the odds of all that happening?

The Price is a decent enough episode, but I doubt it makes many people's top 5 tier lists for season 3. I had a feeling you would dislike Devinoni Ral, especially with his constant smug manipulation shown throughout the episode. That look on your face when he started messing with Troi's hair was a picture. It’s satisfying to see Troi ultimately stand her ground and reject Ral's methods. In the end, the episode is less about the fate of the wormhole and more about the choices we make when faced with temptation, whether in love, power, or morality. This isn't really relevant to the reaction, but I think you'd really suit a TNG era Starfleet uniform with that hairstyle. I'm guessing you'd go for the gold, engineering division colour in support of Geordi. I've got a red command one that I've worn at Comic Con North East and for the odd Halloween.

Replicator ( in a huff ): "Listen, Councillor! If you want any 'real' chocolate, go to the kitchens and make it yourself!" Scene shifts to a few minutes later with the replicator in pieces on the floor. Troi exiting in a thunderous mood.
