Ever since you passed the point where I stopped watching, I've kept checking out the thumbnails to see if any were enough to comment on. And I guessing this is some kind of Donnie Darko homage (never seen the movie and I have absolutely no interest in it, I just know the rabbit).

My take on this episode was that Chester was innocent, and became a vengeful spirit because he was murdered for being different. Supernatural does this a lot, where they have "being different" seen as the same thing as "being dangerous" by various characters throughout the series. Sam, for one, experiences this repeatedly, especially in the earlier seasons, when his psychic abilities were portrayed as inherently evil. I feel like Chester is that representation, that just because he acted differently, or seemed to behave differently than what is average for his town, he was an easier target for people to lash out at, and blame, and fear, and when people get scared, they do awful things they might not otherwise. A heavy episode, and a tragic one, but also important for the overall season.

Frank crossed my mind as well upon seeing the bunny mask. No Donnie Darko homage. More akin to the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, albeit with the inference that the guy responsible for the killings in this episode was innocent of the crime he was originally accused of, though they leave that somewhat vague. Been some years since I’ve seen Donnie Darko. I like it well enough, preferably the director’s cut. My brother likes it more than I. Definitely an acquired taste of a film. Never have seen the sequel, but by all accounts that I’ve heard, it’s complete shit and not even worth bothering with.

I did like how the question of the guilt or innocence was never fully answered. Even Dean explaining about a wrongful death leads to vengeful spirits is more educated guesswork in this particular scenario, and they don’t exactly have the time to figure out for certain. It DOES seem likely that Chester was innocent, and wrongfully killed, based on the hints and evidence that we’re presented with. Which does tie into the themes that reoccur in Supernatural that you mentioned of how someone acting differently, or seeming to behave differently than what is average makes someone an easier target for people to lash out at, and blame, and fear, and ultimately terrible things happen. It’s well done here.

The possibility of Freddy being innocent is literally the only good idea that movie had, and they completely wimp out on it.

Thomas Corp

It is. And I would have been more agreeable to the idea if it wasn’t Freddy fucking Kreuger that we’re talking about, hence it’s a forgone conclusion and a half that Freddy was guilty. Supposing they had gone full force with the idea, I’d have applauded the audaciousness of it.
