That is one HELL of a color coordination game you played with your ensemble today, Jess. It all looks very lovely. Just seeing the thumbnail told me there’s the shared sobbing that we had, and I grimly said, “Oh, God, this is going to HURT.” Start with the lighter topic first: I also have been adoring this show and am getting quite melancholic over it all being over come next week. I’ve been waiting for this episode too. Lilia getting her big grand timey wimey episode, and we are ALL so here for it. Especially with the non-linear Interstellar Hill House structure of it all. We were clocking the non-sequiturs were Lilia bouncing around. To see that revealed the way it was, breath left my body from how insanely good they showed that development. As Lilia says, the flow of time is an illusion, lunchtime, doubly so. I love how you got particularly invested in the friendship forged in fire between Lilia and Jen. The looks of the coven were fabulous. Agatha’s looking great as the old Wicked Witch, William is indeed gorgeous as our dear Maleficent. Lilia is sublime as Glinda. And Jen, she’s... I want to say Latrine? I could confirm that if she whipped up a fabulous dish that looks like a Seder at Vincent Price’s house. Seeing as she didn’t, I am unclear on the reference of her cosplay. Your guess of Queen Grimhilde in the old hag disguise makes sense. Fierce look either way. The tarot trial lets Lilia shine Loved how you were not appreciative of all the back talk thrown Lilia’s way, and Jen felt the same. So wonderful how you are yelling at the coven to listen to Lilia for in terms of getting through life-or-death situations, she always puts forth a charming notion; eminently practical and yet appropriate as always. Yeah, the whole episode just builds in such a way that you see Lilia is about to face her death, and she faced it so well. You and I had close to the same reaction. You ask the question that you’re not going to stop crying, made me say, “No, you are not.” One area we differ is the makeup of course. Occupational hazard, like you said. Such is life. Even with knowing it’s coming, you still are not prepared, especially when Lilia hits you with the line how she loved being a witch, shared sob on that one. Lilia holding the line by essentially greeting her enemies with, “Hello, Salem Seven! My name’s Lilia! What’s yours?” That move was something where she took them all off the board. The added bonus is that we can say that ding-dong, the snake is dead. Which old snake? The snaky snake. It’s gone where the goblins go, below. Below, below. Yo-ho, let’s open up and sing and ring the bells out. And Lilia dies well. Breaks all our hearts. Although, given the ending, death is not the end for her. She gets to live all over again. Meaning she’s yet another character that we could see again, just like your girl Sharon, or Alice. Yes, I know that people are pointing out that the last we’ve seen of them, they’re flat on their backs. Well, of course they’re flat on their backs. Witches often prefer keeping flat on their backs. Doesn’t mean they’re permanently out for the count. In any case, Lilia went out with such glorious purpose, having found her coven, and she lived happily. We never do get a real stand-out solo singing moment for Lilia. But we do have a Broadway Queen in Patti, and she reminds us of exactly what a Broadway Queen can do by giving us a fucking POWERHOUSE performance. Your praise of Patti’s acting made me cry again, as I appreciated what you said. Ah, God bless you, Patti. Excuse the SHIT out of that fucking rude as all hell siren blaring whilst you were speaking about Lilia. How gauche! Other notes. I think Agatha was on the road before. She looked genuinely livid at the implication that she wasn’t. Hell, her look looked like it gave voice to my comment to William, which was, “All right, you’re headed the right way for a smacked bottom, Son.” Fun to see how even Agatha’s getting in on the fun of Scarlet Witch being dead or not what with her needling William by noting that somewhere down the line, we’ll have a big “Somehow, the Scarlet Witch returned.” shebang. Should be fun, right? Now to Rio. Death herself. So, let’s see, she’s Agatha’s ex, has been involved with Deadpool, and is even the lady whom Thanos woos and courts... Well, goddamn, does the lady have a type. And she’s the lady that Thanos wiped out half the universe for? I ain’t even mad then, I relate, and I get it. And Agatha freely concedes that she likes the bad boys. Me too, Girl, me too. I had heard the idea pop up. It seemed logical, and it feels like the reveal was meant to be steadily surmised. You continue to show how sharp a cookie you are as you had it practically all figured out and wrapped up in tissue paper with pink ribbons on it. And now she’s on the mission: Coming for Julian’s wig whilst sporting her Sunday’s finest. (Aubrey’s Sunday’s finest that is.) Just such a beautiful episode, and now an equally beautiful reaction that is most treasured, Jess, thank you so, so very much.

There are certain times where I'm so impressed by something that my immediate thought is "This isn't just me, right? This really is an amazing piece of work." So it was quite a good time trawling through reviews and social media and seeing that even a lot of people who hadn't really been feeling the show so far completely loved this episode. The one big downside here is we've now reached a point where it's looking more and more likely that Sharon's plane really was shot down over the Sea of Japan. And what's everyone thinking for the classic pop culture witch she would have been dressed as here? Usually I'd say Glinda, but with Lilia taking that one, I'm going to go with Kiki. And I kind of suspect "If the cheekbones fit" is what Joe Locke actually said when he found out about this one, and they decided to put it in. Maybe my favorite set dressing so far, with a fantastic natural suspense setup. The Sword of Damocles is hanging over my head, and I have a feeling someone's gonna be cutting the thread (side note, you can now watch that movie on Disney+ if you have the Hulu bundle, which I find absolutely hilarious). It's a special thing when you immediately want to rewatch an entire story to see all the clues you missed after learning what Darmok and Jalad were doing at Tanagra. Last week I noted that one split sentence, but there was so much more I didn't catch, and as Edgar Wright notes in the Hot Fuzz commentary, that kind of rewatch value is just automatically owed to the audience in this era of being easily able to rewatch anything whenever we want. Patti is stupendous, of course, even if I'm also still curious what Miriam Margolyes would have done with the role, and you could feel the whole crew taking a serious duty to give her a fitting sendoff. I'm definitely going to be looking up more of her stuff after this. I did have to laugh a bit at Agatha claiming the Wicked Witch was based on her. You mean the character who only shows up in one chapter of the book, and never does anything evil so we just have to take the Wizard's word that she deserves to be killed, which provides so much wiggle room that there's a decades-running hit Broadway show about how she was actually the hero? Might want to keep that one under your hat, so to speak. The episode even retroactively fixes one of my biggest problems with the last one, as it's made clear Billy's sense of identity is still a very fluid thing, which could go just about anywhere in these remaining two episodes. I also assume that just like whether Steve was still alive in Falcon and Winter Soldier, this show's crew simply never got a straight answer regarding Wanda, which is why she's treated so vaguely. I at least have a bit more hope that'll be resolved sooner. Regarding the reveal with Rio, literally the only thing I know about "Death" in the Marvel Universe is that Thanos wants to fuck her, so that's off the table and I have absolutely nothing to go on for what this means. So I'm just open to wherever this ride takes us.

Time is an illusion, and so is death. And pants. My mind went more to "Why would you want to be here? What do you ever see here that doesn't make you feel worse than you do? And tell me, what's the use of feeling, Blue?" And I was kind of hoping she'd shout that the Seven were all clods. I was thinking the whole time that Jen was the Snow White Queen's old hag disguise; not up on her actual name so maybe that's the same one you're talking about.

Thomas Corp

Yeah, with Patti, my mind’s on the Broadway references. Good Steven Universe nod. Yeah, Queen Grimhilde is the name of the Evil Queen in Disney’s Snow White. I saw Jen’s cosplay, immediate thought was, “...She looks like Tracey Ullman as Latrine. Is that accidental, or is that what we were aiming for?” Jess making the Snow White guess tells me that the homage to the old hag’s look is likely correct.

It is quite refreshing to see the overwhelming shared response to this episode. The reference you made about Sharon, after fighting the urge to sob, I yelled, “Pause right there. We don’t even fucking joke about that reference in this household.” Good use of the reference to be clear, it’s just one that seriously threatens a breakdown. Suppose it’s payback for at work over five years ago when I made the crack that there’d be a second Red Wedding in the last season of Game of Thrones, and my one boss yelled, “Oh, Jesus, Tom, don’t even joke like that!!” It is getting likely about Sharon. Maybe she could be reincarnated into a Norwegian Blue. Remarkable bird the Norwegian Blue. Beautiful plumage, isn’t it? I wouldn’t say no to Debra dressed up in a Jadis get-up, though Kiki would be nice too. Considering that I’ve now heard that Joe Locke came up with the line of not wanting to go back in the closet, I can see him coming up with the cheekbones line. The setting of the trial does strike a good look where high is low, they’re dressed up with no place to go. And all they know is they’re at the start of a pretty big downer. (Tis fitting that the film is on Disney+ as Frank-N-Furter is one HELL of a Disney Queen.) Like Jess said, there is immense rewatchability in this one. And it is true that it is just automatically owed to the audience in this era of being easily able to rewatch anything whenever we want, and we don’t have to worry about being kind and rewinding. To the surprise of absolutely no one familiar with Patti, stupendous she was indeed. There is curiosity with what Miriam would have brought to Lilia. Again, assuming that’s who she was courted for, though at this point, that seems the most likely. Patti is such a goddamn national treasure, so I’m most happy how this all worked out. If Agatha is indeed the inspiration for the Wicked Witch, maybe she can tell us where Scarecrow got the gun that he had in the movie. Shared observation on the fluidity of William’s identity, and how that could play out a few different ways. The Scarlet Witch business does feel like the showrunners are hedging their bets by being as wishy-washy as they’ve been so as to keep their options open, particularly if they have a “Somehow, the Scarlet Witch returned.” type deal somewhere down the line. This show revealing that Thanos has got good taste in women was not on my bingo card for this show, but here we are. He did have a strong smile when it got mentioned that to face the Avengers would be to court Death. Last two episodes of this: Take the ticket; Ride the ride.

For whatever reason, that scene never had much effect on me, probably aided by how Hallmark's completely random airing schedule and the healthy online fan community meant I knew all about it long before I actually saw the episode. The one that gets me a lot more is when Henry gets the video from his family, knowing he'll never get back to them. And I've long been fascinated by the whole thing where a ton of OG fans were all 100% convinced McLean Stevenson had made a surprise appearance as Henry in a lifeboat on the next day's Carol Burnett Show, yet everyone involved with the show has always denied it happened and no video evidence has ever turned up.

Thomas Corp

Oh, I too went into the show knowing it was coming. That spoiler was more or less impossible to avoid, even in the days of dial-up internet. The random Hallmark schedule aided with that. I do remember that, now you mention it. It still hit like beyond a ton of bricks. Makes my top ten saddest television deaths. Probably top five. In terms of other scenes connected to that that hit just as bad, there is the episode where Henry can’t be with his newborn son, and Radar arranges for him to hold the one baby for a bit. That bit hurt bad, knowing what was coming. I’m aware of the urban myth about McLean appearing in the lifeboat on Carol Burnett, and it never happened. He DID pop up in a lifeboat on the Cher Show, so I surmise people got shows mixed up. Among other reasons, practically nobody even remembers that The Cher Show ever existed.

FUNKO spoiled us, that Rio was Lady Death and I can´t get over that! xD Lady Death in the comics is a relatively "neutral" character, so I kinda like the way how they talked about death... "a thing that we all have in common!"

Thomas Corp

They did? Oh. Hadn’t caught that, and I tend to keep tabs on the funkos, you know, keep an eye out for good ones. That is a nice line about how death is a thing we all have in common.

DieWinterkirsche

Yep, there are articels from September 30th talking about it... Her and William being "Wiccan" was spoiled. I mean, LEGO spoils stuff about Star Wars all the time. These companies really have to chill. xD Do you know about Lady Death from the comics? :)

Thomas Corp

I know the general idea about her. Such as Thanos going about with the Snap as a way to woo her in the comics. The companies do need to do a better job with the spoilers. One of the worst ones was how they had a funko for Infinity War of the Stonekeeper. Saw that before I saw the film, and deduced who it was by the appearance of the funko. Would have been nice to have been unspoiled on that one.

Ryan

Doctor Who has been very bad about this, all the way back to a magazine article in 1973 blowing the name of Galifrey MONTHS before it was revealed onscreen. And it can be hard to remember now, but one very nice subversion was Disney not making a peep about Baby Yoda until the launch of Disney+ which came with the first Mandalorian episode, giving up what would have been an absolute bonanza of holiday merch purchases because for a fleeting moment they decided the art was more important.

The Norwegian Blue? The plumage don't enter into it!! It's metabolic processes are only of interest to a historian! It's a stiff! Bereft of life, it rests in peace! It's effing snuffed it!!
