Whenever I rewatch this one, I always forget how good is it. And I also forget that we're going there to find Tegan's grandfather. Actually, I usually just remember the big Malus prop. And that there is another exploding church (like "The Daemons"). And the lychgate. I like the idea of a plot that historical reenactments causes issues - I always knew there was something creepy about reenactment squads. I like the Will Chandler character - and he was apparently considered as a possible companion. It could have been interesting to give a bit of the Jamie McCrimmon / Victoria Waterfield style of companion from an earlier Earth time-period. A completely random note I made when I watched it with you: I quite liked the camera setup of the moving TARDIS time rotor with the Doctor appearing behind it. "Stop it? Are you mad? You speak treason!", "Fluently!", Sir George and the Doctor, "The Awakening" We've seen a few actors before: we saw Denis Lill (Sir George) under heavy accent-makeup in "Image of the Fendahl", and Glyn Houston who played Colonel Wolsey was the head of the nuclear complex in "The Hand of Fear". BTW: the "You speak treason" / "Fluently" is a famous line from Errol Flynn's "The Adventures of Robin Hood". But it is a great line! Jane Hampden, the sensible schoolteacher, was played by Polly James. She is most well-known for her role in "The Liver Birds" - along with Nerys Hughes who we saw playing the sensible woman scientist in "Kinda" (she was also in "Torchwood") - and, for the first Liver Bird's season, Pauline Collins who played Sam in "The Faceless Ones" and Queen Victoria, later in New Who. So now we have a good set of Liver Birds. The famous horse blooper from this story is more interesting than I was originally aware - both takes with the horse pulling the carriage up to the lychgate went wrong. In the first the horse didn't stop on the correct mark (blame the cart driver) but stopped at a point which caused the actors to clumsily make their way around the cart - and then the horse walked off to investigate a nice bit of grass. In the second take, the horse was simply following the actors through the lychgate in a nice friendly way before completely knocking the set down. It was the second take that was used in the episode - cut just before it all went wrong. Actually, the only negative, for me, is the too static Malus prop. The creepy creature on the TARDIS wall is wonderful though. I rank this story highly among the Classic Who two-parter stories (that you've seen) - but still behind "Black Orchid" which I love for its 1920s time period. "Brave heart, Tegan.", The Doctor, "The Awakening"

if you're wondering what became of Kamelion, the shape shifting robot the doctor picked up in King's Demons, he was due to appear in Part 1 of this story but his scene was cut for time
