It was reported in quite a few fan circles at the time that this story would genuinely get rid of the TARDIS for good, but in later years it became clear that it was never seriously considered, and it's even a popular theory that the crew deliberately leaked a fake story for some cheap publicity after the ratings began their freefall.

"I'm not helping, officially. And if anyone happens to ask whether I made any material difference to the welfare of this planet, you can tell them I came and went like a summer cloud.", The Doctor, "Frontios" This story was written by a previous Who script editor ("The Leisure Hive" through "Logopolis") and writer of "Logopolis" and "Castrovalva". "I've got another one of these somewhere. Put them side by side, we'll have a pair.", The Doctor, "Frontios" I love Turlough's use of the hat-rack too! I suppose if the Doctor could find his other one, then Tegan could wave one around as well. This is way, way off topic: One of the things I recall the most about this story is that in the Target novelisation (written by Bidmead himself), two of the colonists are named and they are named "Kernighan" and "Ritchie". These two names are taken from the authors of a book describing a popular computer language and the names were very familiar to me - the book was universally referred to by the author's initials (K&R) by programmers at the time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_C_Programming_Language So I almost fell off my chair when I read the names in the novelisation. And I seriously doubt whether anyone else will mention the origin of these names in any of the Patreon or Youtube comments on this story. "Veruna is where one of the last surviving groups of mankind took shelter in the great er. Yes. Well, I suppose you've got all that to look forward to, haven't you.", The Doctor, "Frontios" We, New Who watchers recollect the "Utopia" episode with a last surviving group of humans. That didn't end well. "He said the earth was hungry.", Norna, "Frontios" People being sucked into the ground? That's basically the threat in "The Hungry Earth"? And an almost identical use of the line. I guess we assume Chibnall was influenced here. And, watching your reaction, I think you might have thought so too. "Now please, come and see the TARDIS. As an invasion weapon it's about as offensive as a chicken vol-au-vent.", The Doctor, "Frontios" Plantagenet is played by Jeff Rawle. He's got a stack of IMDB credits. But the one that concerns us is that he played one of the BBC people in the "An Adventure in Space and Time" docu-drama. He was also in one of the Harry Potter movies - the father of Cedric Diggory. Peter Gilmore, playing Brazen - your favorite annoyance, was extremely familiar to the TV public due to his role in "The Onedin Line". "Your population has already fallen below critical value required for guaranteed growth and you're regularly losing new lives. I think, and you did ask what I think, I think your colony of Earth people is in grave danger of extinction!", The Doctor, "Frontios" You tell him, Doctor!
