Oh dear. Monster problem. This is one of those instances when Jim Henson's Creature Workshop would have made a massive improvement on the Tractators and made them really scary. As it is, sorry, I really cannot take those creatures with any seriousness at all. They are just awful. I knew there had to be a reason why I didn't buy the DVD version of this story. That was it. Contextually, I like the creatures of Vortis much better. Within that era, and the stage play feel of it all, the Menoptera and the Zarbi and venom grubs actually do work. The Tractators, on the other hand, stick out like a sore whatsit. When the Tractator went, "Arrgh!" as the Doctor bowled a 'space ball' at him, I felt as if someone should ask if they want ointment on that. Maybe a handy Ood could provide? "Do you want ointment on that, sir?" I am reminded of what Patrick Stewart said when he had been crawling around in Planet Hell and the studio lot's stray cats had been using the dirt he'd been crawling through as a litter tray. He started to laugh and said, "I don't know how I got here!" Maybe the actor in the Tractator suit had the same thought?

The suits sucked so much that the actors were physically unable to do certain things the original script called for, so they had to be taken out.

Thank you for a wonderful reaction to something that was not in my top 10 of stories. Don't get me wrong here because I thought the plot and the story in general was extremely well written, perhaps just badly let down by how silly the Tractators looked. I could see what they were going for and I think if they brought them back for a New Who story, they would have the potential to look really terrifying. The thought of using living bodies as slaves to that tunneling machine was utterly monstrous and I feel that they pulled that off really well. It made me feel somewhat nauseous to see captain Revere trussed up in that thing looking like a living corpse with all the energy drained out of him. Also, I wanted to mention that I think they had a very interesting choice of names for the Characters. Revere, meaning deep respect or admiration for something. Brazen meaning Bold and without fear, and Plantagenet being the name an English medievil royal bloodline. Jess, you posed a very interesting question, which I'd also given some thought to. I feel that they, particularly Brazen, handled it in possibly the only way they knew how, before the arrival of the Tardis crew. They were probably terrified of losing the only resources they had & so locked them up rather than make use of them to figure out what was going on. People were getting swallowed up into the ground, they faced constant meteor bombardment and their fledgeling society was collapsing into anarchy. Their enemy was unseen & possibly they wanted to save their resources for when they had to fight. That's my take on it for what it's worth. I feel Turlough also killed it in this, his temporary breakdown was so well played & he proved himself to be very menacing with a hatstand! Lastly, I loved your analogy of their gravity beams as the pink floofy stuff! See you next time!

"Purplish pink floofy stuff" That's the new canon name for The Tractators' attack now. Be interesting to see how high the 5th Doctor ranks in your overall Doctor tier list.
