Much like Love and Thunder, I saw this movie before anyone could tell me I was supposed to hate it, so I didn't, and now I'm stuck having the wrong opinion about it. And when I made my big post that 2023 was the best movie year I've ever experienced, this was on it. I'll agree that Guardians 3 was a big step up, but that just speaks more to how amazing that movie is. Of course, the big talking point is that this was our last look at Kang while Jonathan Majors still had a viable career, and the stinger especially is incredibly awkward to watch now. It got a lot of complaints that he couldn't be taken seriously after Ant-Man of all people got a clean win against him, but (much as I hate to put it like this) it feels like those people just don't get his whole deal from the comics, where he's basically the Omnidroid from The Incredibles, getting regularly defeated but learning each time so the same method can never be used again. And with No Way Home having firmly established all versions of someone across the multiverse don't have to look anything alike, I would have been perfectly fine with a recasting. All a moot point now, but I'm going to die a little bitter about this. This version of MODOK also got a really bad rap. Everyone who complained about him looking too silly, just take a good hard look at the character you're talking about, and explain how you would do it. I'm honestly curious what you come up with. Plus, making him a composite character with Cross was a genuinely clever touch that I didn't see coming at all but makes perfect sense. I even bought his redemption moment more than I thought could be possible. The movie got one last piece of bad luck when Bill Murray was faced with several sexual harassment accusations, right as they were clearly planning for his cameo to be a big deal, but suddenly his career had achieved total consciousness. It's still brief enough that I'm not bugged too much. Mostly I'm just excited now that Guardians 3 is up next. Don't try to prepare yourself for it. You can't.

You are right that this film is not necessarily one of the more beloved MCU films. I saw it opening weekend, and already heard rather vitriolic bile thrown its way. The one big thing that I’m with fans on is that this isn’t as fun as the other two Ant-Man films. The big reason for that is the absence of the heist/caper aspect, which is what gave the other two Ant-Man films their own little charm and fun. Ok, fine, in terms of heist/caper films, they weren’t at the level of say for example The Asphalt Jungle, The Killing, Le Cercle Rouge, Rififi, Topkapi, and/or The Anderson Tapes, no. But they were still fun. Here that’s absent, and it is an objective disappointment in the film. The other big gripe is that the cgi in this does in spots look like the same level of quality as the cgi in Spy Kids 3-D, which, rather jarring an accomplishment as the film came out twenty years prior to this Ant-Man and the Wasp film. But setting aside the cgi, and what we didn’t get, what we did get is still a perfectly serviceable popcorn picture, if not the most spectacular one ever made, and my buddy and I had a good time when we saw it the Saturday of its opening weekend. And it is now a delight, Jess, to see you really had a good time with it. Memory is stronger than I think I give it credit for as I only saw the film the one time, and watching your reaction, I remembered stuff well enough. I remembered how you said you love Hank, so I knew that part of this would be right up your alley. Hank came to work in this movie. Your reactions to him coming in with the ants, that was wonderful. That shot of Hank having that majestic pose with the ants, Michael selling that moment, he had the spirit of his dad with him on that one; that was pure Spartacus. Got me a bit emotional just thinking about it. Likewise, Michelle is up there on my favorite actresses, so I liked as you did, the furthering of Janet’s story, and defensiveness of Janet. Plenty of half-communications that led to the mess, but it all makes sense. Janet having had a dalliance with Bill Fucking Murray was a curveball, though you console Hank by saying, “Let’s face it, Hank, this is not the creepiest and/or weirdest romance that a character played by Michelle has been involved in.” It is sweet seeing your reaction to Hank’s moments of “I’ve one thing to say, and that’s damn it, Janet, I love you.” You demand a spin-off. I’d love the acting from Michelle and Michael in a hypothetical spin-off. Loved Cassie’s arc of her relationship with Scott, and wanting to save people. Took me until I got home to recognize Katy O’Brian in this, which is embarrassing really. The oozey hole guy with the Babel fish ooze apparently, had a charm to him. He lived his best life when he became holey. Soon to be two years later, still mixed feelings on the Darren of it all, so you’re not alone on that one, Jess. My thought was, “THIS asshole’s back!?” I guess it was nice. I got horrified at the multiple Scott scene, thinking of myself in that, I’d say to the villains, Multiples of me, “...Sure hope to God you guys got plenty of Ritalin and Adderall to deal with this many me. Probably want to have some Lexapro on hand too.” To now address the one delicate topic. Kang. My assessment of this is based on my viewing of it coming up two years ago, which, as I recall, was before any allegations came out toward Jonathan Majors. My thought was that he did deliver an effective performance, and that Kang himself wasn’t a bad villain. I would have liked to have had better writing/presentation for him, but I also recognized that this film is the looking price. The grand villainy would come later. Combine that with the tease at the end of Loki season one, plus the credits scene, you got the sense of what they were planning, and I was ok with it. Cut to Loki season two coming out in the midst of the Jonathan Majors, controversy, I guess is the word I’m looking for. And it became clearer that Marvel was counting on him bringing a strong Lon Chaney energy, combined with, as Ryan compares, an Omnidroid type deal with Kang. And if it was going to go forward with that, I wasn’t mad about it. They have now dropped Kang like a hot potato, as evidenced by the big news back in the summer, I’m not going to say one word about it, barring, I don’t what the fuck they’re thinking is all I’m mentioning, as I know you did not hear that news. Again, Kang got a good showing. Kang the conquering villain is most Kangry, yes. Loved your Godzilla encouragement. Serving Godzilla realness is a fantasy that every man dreams of. People in the theater were confused by the Loki tease, so it makes a fun contrast how you were delighted to see your beloveds. So, since I saw this already, my list of MCU films still not seen remains Shang-Chi, Guardians Three, and The Marvels, plus the slate for next year. I continue to love how positive you are with the MCU. Can’t quite say I’m the same, as this isn’t a franchise like Star Wars or Indiana Jones where, like you describe here, you go in knowing you’ll have a good time. Maybe not as spectacular a time as other MCU films, but a damn good time all the same, and it was nice to see that hear. Thanks for the fun reaction, Jess.

I keep noting that Jess and others love/are invested in the MCU greater than I. Looking over my top ten lists of years of film, none of the MCU films make my top ten. I do have seven MCU films that would make a top fifteen list of their years. This one is not one of them, but it is still a fun popcorn picture, my buddy and I had a good time, and it’s nice when you or Jess or anybody else has a strong reaction to it. As mentioned with Kang, I would have liked better writing for Kang in the film, whilst tempering that complaint with the fact that this is the looking price, and he’d presumably get better showings down the road. And it’s not like it was a cake walk for our heroes to defeat him here. Plus, the manner in which he is defeated does have the set-up for a “Somehow, this Kang returned” deal. One area Kang disappointed me was his explicit lack of a non-promise in letting Cassie go, I even noted in the theater was that he gives Scott no word to keep on that, and it was blatantly noticeable. Thus, you don’t have the fun of the exact words of the non-promise paying off. One downside of Emperor Palpatine being my favorite character: he sets the bar of villainy at the height of the Sears Tower, and my standards are too strict sometimes, but that’s just me. In terms of Darrining Kang, I heard Colman Domingo got brought up, and I would have LIVED for that. I know the one joke that circulated was “Esteemed award-winning actor, Kirk Lazarus to take over the role of Kang.” My brother and I both pissed our pants laughing ourselves silly on that one, saying, “Goddamn it, that’s fucking awful!” They have now made the shift that they did, I’m not going to talk specifics as, I believe anyway, Jess does not know the news about that. Severely mixed feelings on the announcement that they made is all I’m saying until I know that Jess knows/we tackle the films when the information becomes relevant. I’m with Jess on having the “what the fuck” response to the Darren of it all. Good to hear you liked the redemption arc that he had. As to Bill Murray’s career achieving total consciousness, he is now free to continue his hunt for the gopher. Though he was in the Ghostbusters film this year. Meantime, he bought, or at least became a big shareholder of the minor league baseball team in my hometown. Past few springs/summers, I’ve gone to a game or two with my uncle, and sometimes, one of my dad’s cousins joins us. We have a nice time. It’s nice to get out, see a game, and just spend time with each other. Still need to see Shang-Chi, Guardians Three, and The Marvels. You have been saying that the fans are back to liking Star Lord again, which tells me I’m going be the goddamn asshole in refusing to forgive the fucking idiot, though my opinion of his being a fucking idiot predates Infinity War. I got a small rant ready, as I’ve been like Betelgeuse hocking the loogie in his coat pocket, saying, “Save that guy for later.” waiting to use it for when we get to that film. The film itself, you say that in being prepared, “We all think that at first. We are all wrong.” my response is this: So long as Nebula lives, we’re good.

Always good to see someone else who doesn't despise this movie. I'd totally forgotten Katy O'Brien was in this, so that was a lovely surprise. Also pretty fun to come back to Kathryn Newton after coming to love her so much in Freaky and Lisa Frankenstein (and I'm a bit surprised Jess didn't seem to recognize her as Castiel's daughter). It was pretty controversial that Cassie's actress from Endgame got replaced, but she's certainly a good one to go with.
