In terms of foreknowledge, I only have bits and pieces of things that I picked up when friends and/or people at work have talked about this show. Plus a few other things that the internet does not keep quiet about. Others, I imagine, know more, and even then, I wouldn’t worry much, Jess, since as you say, this is your initial gut reactions to all the messiness that has transpired. Terrifying opening of the festive Christmas Hell. (And, oh yeah, we have a demon, a witch, and the Devil there too.) Loved your reaction to that, and most fortuitous that on youtube, this is the Christmas upload. You do feel quite bad for Castiel in this episode, like your defense of him. Makes sense that he essentially benches Dean, given the smiting sickness. Castiel revealing that the last time God or the angels deployed power like what was deployed against Amara, Lot’s wife became the pillar of salt, had me say, “...Uh-huh. ...Good to know.” Shared thing of zero suspense that Amara lives still, though it seems she still needs to get some of her wind back. Progress. The main attraction is Lucifer trying to manipulate Sam, from what I’ve heard speaking for the audience some too. I’m with you on wondering where Lucifer was going with some of it, leading me to query, “Is there a point? Or are you just brushing up on your small talk?” You summarize essentially the same thoughts as mine. Lucifer is not incorrect on some of what he pointed out. And I know the fandom agrees with the Amelia business, though I still don’t entirely get how that’s the worst thing on this show, going by the fans rant about it at least. The arc did have problems, sure, and I’m not unsympathetic to the criticisms as they do make sense. Where I’m coming from is that it’s not the worst detour a show’s ever taken. Now, when Lucifer talks about how ludicrously co-dependant Sam and Dean are anymore, if we’re going to talk turkey about that topic, then I have a medical obligation to drink. All this aside, you and Sam hit the nail on the head. Sure, it’s not impossible that Lucifer is capable of defeating Amara, but he’s not offering much certainty, nor, like you said, does he really offer any real assurance to Sam about that, or assure Sam that nothing bad will happen after Amara’s toast. He mixes lies with the truth as the Devil often does, and Sam gains respect for saying no. Love how it sends Lucifer into a tizzy. His plan B was sloppy as he’s made it clear that he can’t kill Sam. In Sam’s place, if the beatdown had lasted longer, I’d taunt Lucifer by saying shit like, “Oh, is that it? Come on, you can do better than that!” “GodDAMN IT, how many windows are open down here!? Because I’m feeling a steady breeze!” “Seriously, if I wanted a kiss, Lucy, I’d have just asked your mother!” And when Lucifer inevitably asks where’s the money that’s owed to Jackie Treehorn, you customarily reply, “Oh, it’s uh... uh... it’s down there somewhere, let me take another look.” He threatens pain like one cannot even imagine. You ask him to please not do that, me, my response would be that I don’t know, my brain can imagine quite a bit. Elsewhere, Crowley and Dean have to deal with Rowena fangirling hard. I so love how you caught Rowena falling victim to one of the classic blunders of the poisoned tea. A goddamn shame that we couldn’t have a whole episode of mother and son trying to outwit the other, culminating in Crowley saying, “Because I KNEW that you knew that I knew that you knew that I knew you...” fill in the blank for whatever creative fuckery anyone cares to envision. Crowley using the witch catcher cracked me up. Less for what he does to Rowena, and more the great acting in the scene. Speaking of great acting, yeah, Ruth killed that last scene, as did Mark in a rather quiet and restrained manner. I feel you how you say you felt that scene. You mention the thought that Crowley had Dean order a pizza. You could see Crowley ordering a pizza to go with the witch catcher. Maybe even a nice big beef pocket if he really feels like a celebratory mood with tricking Rowena. And the spell succeeds. Or so they think. Similar thing of catching the ominous lingering shots and putting two and two together about Lucifer using Castiel as a meat puppet. Makes poor Castiel go full on Shatner, the horror! And to your disappointment, they have the Have You Told Anyone Else trope played PAINFULLY straight, leading to Rowena getting her neck snapped, and she is now dead. Dead, dead, deadski, gone, split, outta here, afterlife kids, deceased-ahh. Lucifer doesn’t give a shit, simply looking at her body, likely thinking, “Well, we won’t be seeing her again.” A sentiment you do not like, as one, you are, as you say, protective of the women in this show, for good reason. Two, you would have preferred a death for Rowena to have been more glorious. Can’t say I’m as upset as you like Rowena more than I. You call her delightful. Not the word I’d use, though she is a diva extraordinaire, so she is a complete blast. In any event, we’re left wondering what comes next. Whatever that may be, we shall see. Meantime, this reaction was most fun, Jess, thank you.
