You had to suspect that this episode would be all about catching up with Jinx after she was absent from the premiere, and I love that they had the confidence to not rush a reunion with all the big popular characters right away so they could all have the space they deserved. It's so cool seeing Ella return to this role after her star has risen so much in the last three years, and as the saying goes, it's like watching her slip into a comfortable pair of old shoes. We also get that jaw-dropping opening, and at this point I go into each episode excited to see what kind of experimental animation they've come up with just as much as what's in store for the characters. And I'm still holding on to how we may well see Lucy MacLean get to this same level (and after The Penguin I'm also now hoping we get to see her and Cristin Milioti team up somewhere; those vibes feeding off each other would really be something). "How is it that even after you're dead, I'm still cleaning up your messes?" Well, this is what you asked for. Heavy is the crown. The animators must have freaked out hard when they found out about this new arm, affording them the chance to go hog wild like this. I also have to give big props to Lenny Citrano, who takes this single episode role and bites down hard to make Smeech a very memorable part of the show despite the brevity of his screen time. But before any of that, we get Vi's sole appearance, perfectly built up with the Gray seeming to hide some Lovecraftian horror before it turns out to actually be Caitlin's crew, and the one thing sure to destroy any last hope Jinx had in her sister is the sight of her in an enforcer mask. Her facial animation during this whole sequence combined with Ella's wordless gasping and screaming is one of those unpredictable times where different kinds of artists combine to create a piece of magic none could do on their own. And then there's Victor's turn to Arcane Jesus (or Spock). No matter how much this seems like a good thing, everything about how it's presented has us suspicious anyway, and that's always the sign of a skilled storyteller. Harry Lloyd is able to alter his vocal quality from Season 1 to make clear something is profoundly different in him, without just sounding like a different person, and we can all hope this isn't just headed for a gold crown. An inevitable part of this being the story's end, we have no guarantees for anyone.

Rather generous of this show to deliver both counts of what you wished for. These first two episodes back do a great job of showcasing the similarities and differences between the perspectives of Piltover compared to Zaun. Well spoken about how for Piltover, the recent attacks against them, it is the greatest threat to everything that they are. But for Zaun, the recent attacks against them, it is Tuesday. Power plays are a brewing to take Silco’s place. One downside to the season is Silco is dead, so my favorite character of this show’s already been killed off. Eh. On the other hand, the tension’s gone. Sevika seems well suited for the task of taking up his mantle, though first, she was stuck dealing with that cyberpunk Hämsterviel looking fucker. Jinx is still reeling from losing the one person who accepted the Jinx of it all, as Silco did in his very Sith manner. Following the death of the father figure, she’s in that aimless thing of it is a sort of detached calm as you noted. Everything’s settling in her helping her along the way of some sort of acceptance. I think you’re right about that. She looks to have a protégé with her mini-me. Shared loving the dynamic between Jinx and Sevika. Fantastic fight scene and team-up complete with Sevika getting her new arm. They took the Treasure Planet of it all and escalated it with Sevika’s new arm. Loved your reactions to the arm, especially the speaker system that made me ask, “How do you pipe in John Williams into this arm? Because I need this in my daily life.” There is also of course, the recurring thing of Sevika and her dramatic cape tossing done with such passionate gusto. We love. The one death of the aforementioned cyberpunk Hämsterviel looking fucker would have to be pretty gruesome if it isn’t shown onscreen. Rather horrifying to see the scene of the air quality of Zaun getting worse as a result of the green gas. Gets you good when Jinx has the perfect shot to kill Vi, and still, she can’t do it, leading to one hell of a wail. And since she got away, Caitlyn is quite put out. Makes sense as she is going through it tougher than the tough time she went through when Cedric Diggory was murdered by Wormtail, not to mention how Hermione fucked up her friend’s face. Viktor now had the eye-opener that you anticipated. Sort of sucks for Jayce that Viktor then just leaves, complete with those lines that got you in the heart. Viktor is now off playing his Moses routine, complete with cosplay sans beard. So far, I see no immediate danger of the cult forming, just hopefully they don’t resort to human sacrifice as a way to save their apples. Early days and all. One quick thing, the guy he healed made me ask, “Wasn’t this guy that one stoolie from last season?” I think he is. Now to your dear beloved Ekko. Love to see your love of him. Him and Heimerdinger look to be dealing with problems of the tree. First presumption is that the tree has been poisoned by the filthy brown acid rain pouring down like egg chowmein. Hence their off to get the second opinion, loved your delightful reaction to their sneaking about. Two episodes back, and I am greatly reminded how much I loved your analysis and commentary for this show, Jess. It is lovely to be back with it. Thank you for the great reaction.

For me it would be a request for Ennio Morricone, who I put even above Williams, though it's a very close ranking (and I'm profoundly thankful they both found their perfect match director who they got to work with for decades).

Thomas Corp

They are both at that same level of pure excellence, and yeah, it is a very, VERY close one in ranking; John just has the slightest edge for me. Plus, like you said, they both had that perfect match of director and composer. Ennio would be awesome with that arm.

Thomas Corp

Seeing as she sat out the last episode, yeah, you’d figure this one would have Jinx more front and center. The patience of the waiting game of the reunion is great. I am greatly anticipating the idea of what it’ll be like getting to see Lucy MacLean get to the same level as Jinx in her journey with one well-dressed fucking Ghoul to hunt down Hank and find out where his fucking cute little butt is hiding. I haven’t seen Penguin because I haven’t seen the Batman film that it’s spun-off from. And if I ever do see the film, I am completely going to be unable to take it seriously whenever the caped crusader is onscreen, and I’ll keep sounding like Christopher Walken. By the same token, I do hear the show is reasonably its own standalone thing, so I guess it would not be the biggest problem just seeing the show without seeing the film. The actress team-up you mention, however, does sound very agreeable. That arm was something. Everything and everybody came together to sell Jinx’s despair at seeing that Vi has now become the very thing she swore to destroy. Given the look of his staff, I got more the vibe that Viktor is now Arcane Moses... or Spock. 🖖 (They play Like a Prayer, I’m losing my shit by the way.) Kudos to Harry Lloyd’s voice work. If this does build to another golden crown, I ain’t even going to be mad as that’s, well, technically Ellaria did not physically die in her last scene, but the golden crown’s tied with that last Ellaria scene for being the second most satisfying death/demise scene in Game of Thrones. Number one being Ramsay’s death which was EXTRAORDINARILY pleasurable to witness. Seeing it, my face had to have looked like that massive shark grin that the Emperor had when he and Yoda had the lightning battle before it blew up. Still the only mild to the point of inconsequential complaint with this show is that I don’t recognize a single artist on the soundtrack for this show, and I don’t see that changing. On the other hand, at work the other day, I reminded myself that I know one more Billie Eilish song than I thought. Voice in my head reminded me of her song that’s used for the theme for True Detective season four. Took a second to recall, saying, “Wh-Oh, that’s right, that was, I forgot about that! Completely slipped my mind!” And now, I remember I have a, I guess go-to for favorite of her work thus far. Now if only I could remember her Barbie song.

Ryan

There’s enough from the Batman movie that I’d recommend watching it first. I don’t think it’s any kind of masterpiece but it’s definitely a very neat take on the characters where I barely felt the three hour runtime. And its reputation for being overly self-serious is very undeserved and I can only assume is based on the constant wisecracking that people think of the MCU for.

Thomas Corp

I wouldn’t mind if it won on a future poll here. The overly self-serious reputation, people do remember The Dark Knight Rises, yes? That’s a bit mean, granted. There is fair bit of wisecracking in the MCU to be fair, though yeah, not QUITE as bad as people like to make it out to be.
