Amazing to think that Torchwood is over 12 years old now... For your info, this episode premiered in October 2006, a few months after Series 2 of Doctor Who had ended (hence all the references to the Battle of Canary Wharf in "Doomsday"). The last we'd seen of Jack was him being left behind in the far future at the end of Series 1, so his reappearance in the 21st century and his inability to die were both background mysteries which would not be fully explained until he rejoined the Doctor in "Utopia". The fact that the majority of the Torchwood organisation has been recently wiped out in London explains why Jack is running the Cardiff branch on his own, with no one to report to or challenge him. This first series has problems keeping the characterisation consistent, partly because it was a very rushed production -- Russell T Davies' pilot script wasn't finished until January 2006, and the pressure of work on Doctor Who kept him from any further day-to-day involvement in Torchwood. With all the other scripts needed in less than nine months, a lot of them were being written simultaneously, without much reference to each other. The episodes were also made wildly out of order (to be exact: 2, 1, 3, 7, 4, 8, 5, 10, 6, 11, 9, 12, 13) which means it's hard to get a handle on the characters until more than halfway through the series. There are some obvious mis-steps, too; I suspect the sequence with Owen and the alien pheremone spray (or whatever it is) was supposed to be comedic, but the date-rape implications are really ugly, and darken his character a lot more than was probably intended. Anyway, I hope you really enjoy your break, and look forward to seeing what you make of the rest of Torchwood in the new year.
