Yes, another interesting episode of the show. A sort of calm before the storm. Talk about Maggie’s parenting of Hershel. Given how Maggie is always on edge with being protective given everyone she’s lost, it does make realistic sense the boy would bristle over his mother hovering as it were. By the same token, you think the kid would start to think that considering all and who his mom has lost, that maybe there’s a reason why Maggie is that way with parenting Hershel. You mentioned how he’s of the thought of he’s surrounded by capable people who can protect him, yeah, well, I would argue that was the same with his dad, who was a tough bird himself. And yet, still Glenn lost his life. As Negan so colorfully described... Well, on second thought, I won’t repeat Negan’s description of that event. All this to say, stupid teenage contrarian behavior aside, I think Hershel would be perhaps a touch more understanding of his mom, and when Maggie gets him back, I suspect he’ll apologize to her. Also, concerning your query on Maggie knowing about Rick. Difficult to say if Maggie is privy to the information concerning Rick. It depends on if Daryl informed her which I could see it going either way. Luther was interesting, in that yeah, hard to fault him for his attitude towards Negan especially, and Negan himself agrees with that. I was impressed with both Luther and Negan in their scuffle. Luther for the old use your whole body as a weapon strategy. Negan for being crafty with the cheese grater, gruesome sight though it was, though I loved your reaction to it. Negan’s going to have a tough time explaining himself. It recalls a line in Con Air, which was, “Well, you don't have to tell me. Most murders are crimes of necessity rather than desire. But the great ones, Dahmer, Gacy, Bundy, they did it because it excited them.” And though the Croat claims a similar mentality and claims not to care for barbarism, his actions thus far have suggested otherwise. Speaking of the Croat, I am continuing to LOVE Željko Ivanek as the Croat. Midway through the episode, I found myself saying, “Željko, I’m already a fan of your work. Your performance in this? You are creepy as SHIT, my friend! I am LOVING it!” I’m curious if the bit of his backstory of his family killed by cannibalism is a deliberate nod to Željko’s role as Cordell in Hannibal. Hard to say how much you are meant to root for Perlie. Particularly since his first episode, he was enforcing rather draconian laws, which makes me ponder the supposed altruistic nature of this New Babylon. In any event, he probably is just going to keep looking at the Croat as if he is bananas, crackers, and nuts, and you are going to continue to live for it. I’m familiar with the feeling, I get looked at much the same way all the time. I loved the scene of Maggie looking through her memory box and her and Negan’s talk. Both Jeffrey and Lauren were great in that scene. I like how once she says her piece, Negan reveals what happened to Annie and his son, Joshua. Nice to hear both are still alive. I was assuming they had died and was waiting to see if Negan would volunteer information to the contrary. I liked how Negan admits he wasn’t sure if he wanted to kill the guys who did what they did to Annie. If what I think happened, happened, I think I’d have a similar thought in that I’d likely want to break out Lucille. Preferably the one with the barbed wire and swing her at the men responsible, aiming for what’s below their belts. It was a strangely sweet moment when Maggie slightly needles Negan on not knowing when to shut up, and I liked your laughing at that part. If I were Negan, I’d have responded with, “I said I occasionally know how to shut up. “Occasionally” being the operative word.” The scenes with Negan and Ginny were great. Literally as soon as I saw the dinosaur, you were on my mind, Jess. Sidenote, your comment, “Not everybody can whistle.” I know, I can’t for one. Gets to be a pain in the ass from time to time. Hopefully Maggie doesn’t burn the sweet, innocent dinosaur. Thank you, Jess, for another terrific Dead City reaction.
