Starting off with a rough one this week, where what could have been a perfectly fine Rocket Raccoon "I'm gonna get that arm" B- or C-plot is stretched beyond its breaking point. Chopper is basically Newman from Seinfeld, specifically designed for "quick hit" appearances and in no way equipped to carry an entire episode, and they try to compensate for that by pairing him up with Marvin the Paranoid Android's less funny cousin. Who is then blatantly forced into the role of 3PO to his R2 no matter how little it fits with his personality before this. The episode starts out on my bad side with a shameless use of the always irritating trope that being just out of camera range makes you invisible even if there's nothing actually blocking you from sight, and it doesn't improve much from there. It even wastes the theoretically interesting return of Ketsu by having her go through all her character development and joining the Rebellion offscreen, with Sabine's subdued reaction to her arrival implying it's not any kind of surprise. Though it does have one shining moment where the music takes inspiration more from Williams' work on Indiana Jones than Star Wars during the big chase scene (specifically River Phoenix Jones). Thankfully, the next episode gets things back on track, clearly telling us "Here's just a fun action piece before things get really heavy in the finale" and carrying through on that perfectly. And more Rex is always a plus.

To each their own, I like episode 20 but personally enjoy 19 a lot more. Totally get where you're coming from though, but I love AP-5 and Chopper's dynamic from the start as two grumbly old veterans in a new world that doesn't recognise them. I also just really like watching Chopper though, so an episode focused on him doesn't bother me anyway and he does end up finding a base for the Rebels, which they have been trying to do all season, so that offsets the arm thing for me anyways. Same with the trope and Ketsu stuff, different things bother different people I guess, I didn't consider the trope at all as that's not really how I see things I guess (for better or worse) and I didn't need to see Ketsu join the rebellion, think where she leaves off to here works well enough, Could it have been an episode? Sure and quite possibly better one than this, but when watching this episode it isn't something hat bothers me. She essentially joined last time we saw her from how I see it, just wasn't ready to confirm it right there and then. The action/adventure of then next one is fine and the spiders are certainly creepy (and absolutely more Rex is always good) but the only bits I ever really find myself remembering are what they are setting up for the finale, with the Jedi going off by themselves and how knowing they're leaving will affect the crew

Haha the Chopper episode always amuses. After the heavier episodes throughout this season, this is just a lot of fun and quite sweet in its own way! We've had character development episodes with all the crew this season, so why not Chopper too - he deserves it! When he rolls along on his squeaky wheel, I always laugh, it kind of shows his character, a touch unhinged, but really endearing and fun. Him keeping that image of Hera too is really sweet, as it shows just how much he cares for her after she helped him after his ship got shot down in the Ryloth campaign in the Clone Wars. He is an old droid, the C1 droids went out of production when the R2 units came along, and his parts are all mismatched, as shown by his leg, his front hobbled together, and his dome being more angular than what it should be, circular. I think him wanting the leg back would be like restoring a part of himself, hence why he wanted it so much. With all the mismatched parts and him not being wiped just like with R2, he developed his cheeky, surly attitude. Its rather cute when he connects with AP-5 (aka Alan Rickman droid!) as he is just as cantankerous as him! And now he has a friend, AP-5 is his C-3P0! Hera calling Chopper by his designation, C1-10P - you know you are in trouble when she uses your full name! Love the line about the Rebel fleet counting on Chopper! He may be a bit reckless, selfish and maniacal - but he IS a Rebel! :D Onto 2x20. First time we have ever seen lightsabres in training mode. If you get hit with them, it merely stings, instead of cuts limbs! Chopper chasing one of these little snail things on the Ghost, reminiscent of a cat chasing a mouse! He is ths ships ginger cat we have to remember! :D The spiders were originally another one of Ralph McQuarrie's concept drawings. And good eyes Jess as they do make a reappearance in Mandalorian, when Grogu is eating all of Frog Lady's eggs! Rex still showing he's an absolute boss in tackling them, he may not be what he was, but he can still fight with the best of them and is still fearless! Ezra and Kanan putting too much on their force push and almost killing Sabine, thats something they need to practise on!! As noted by Sabine herself, this is when she could use a jetpack of her own. Surprising she hasn't built one as she is a tech genius. Dicer didn't make it - though they didn't try very hard to find her! :D Got to love Hera, she is always amazing as a pilot, leader, 'mother' to our crew and is the glue that keeps everyone together; but you feel how deeply worried she is about Kanan and Ezra going to Malachor. Such a well rounded character. This is more of a contemplative episode, taking the spider battles out and yes it does feel like the calm before the storm, especially as we hear those chilling notes as the episode ends... Finally, I love that it is official Star Wars canon, that one of the bases the Rebels use to fight against the Empire, is named after that little lunatic, Chopper!!! Finally getting the recognition he deserves! :D

I agree Oliver, episode 20 is fine but spends too long on the spiders for me, though it does drop breadcrumbs about whats coming and shows just where our crew are mentally at this time. However episode 19 I've always loved; I was never overly fond of droid episodes in Clone Wars, but the ones in Rebels I'm always more invested in, and who doesn't want to see Chopper take down an imperial ship by himself, and shows his more caring side at the same time with his love for Hera showing through and his blossoming friendship with AP-5. Great fun.

Upon rewatching the droid episode especially, I very much began to anticipate this reaction, because I knew you’d love it. Yes, there was pure fuckery at the beginning. All of it started because Chopper really wanted that leg. I love when you observed that Chopper would just steal the leg, I said, “Yes, of course Chopper’s going to steal it, and that ugnaught will receive naught in sales and commissions for that leg.” It is great how Hera knew the score. I love Ezra being worried about Chopper, leading me to note, “Supposing Chopper was still on the planet, he’s presumably safe. Everyone else on the planet, they’re the ones in danger of the population dropping to zero if Chopper decides to be in a murderous mood.” Of course, it leads to the introduction to dear AP-5. I love how the character is so clearly based off Marvin the paranoid android, complete with Stephen Stanton deliberately styling his voice after Alan Rickman, though it also sounds like a shade or two of Stephen Moore’s vocal performance from the miniseries is mixed in as well. Makes my nerd heart happy. It ended up being somewhat of a poignant tribute to dear Alan as this premiered around two months after Alan’s death. Made me sob some. Still does. Yes, lovely to see Chopper and AP-5 team up and bond. Everything about your reaction to all of it was beautiful, Jess. I love how the music at the one part sounded most similar to John’s music during the street chase/basket chase in Raiders of the Lost Ark. I see Ryan has compared it to the opening of Last Crusade, and yeah, I can hear that too. And as you noted, Jess, it is a highlight how it shows there is a deep bond between Chopper and Hera, despite Chopper’s normally clamorous behavior. Everything about your reaction to the first episode got to me, made me cry. The second episode was a terrific calm before the storm, though yes, “calm” is a relative term given the circumstances which were kicked off by the poor pilot, I assume horrifically killed, even if they never fully addressed that. I loved Zeb being scared, saying, “Multi-leggers. Why’d it have to be muti-leggers?” and I chime in with a John Rhys-Davies impression by saying, “Arachnid-style! Very dangerous! You go first!” Those creatures were something. It almost took me back to the time of playing Jet Force Gemini. I say almost because these are spidery creatures rather than big damn ants. It was amazing in the reaction how you got quite shrill when Rex was in danger. The sign of your strong and powerful love for our beloved Rex. Another sign of strong and powerful love, as you noted, is when an introvert shares their space and time with someone such as Zeb’s lovely scene with Ezra. As someone who’s introverted to the point of being a hermit, I wholeheartedly concur. I suspected that you’d relate what Hera was going through in this episode. It is rich how Kanan needs it spelled out to him to go talk to Hera. I have jackshit in terms of relationship experience, and even I could have told him that one. Yeah, Kanan making the promise of seeing Hera again, that did raise the blood pressure just a hair or two back when this first aired. That feeling persists seeing how it got you deeply worried. You asked why Kanan had to say that he and Hera would see each other again. My response to that being, “No comment.” Just how it ends on the ominous notes of The Imperial March sends a cold shiver running down one’s spine. Worse still, how they have a specific presentation of it from Return of the Jedi that never fails to make me weep. Reminding us that the jocularity of these two episodes was a necessary thing before the dark times. Thank you, Jess, so very, very much for this beautiful reaction. It was a balm for my soul and was most appreciated.

Thomas Corp

Funny you should compare Chopper to Newman as Wayne Knight is often someone whose voice, I imagine Chopper’s voice sounding like. One, because Newman is my favorite from that show. Two, Wayne’s maniacal over the top line delivery often feels a most appropriate fit for Chopper’s histrionics. Yes, more Rex is always a plus.

Thomas Corp

The squeaky wheel does sum up Chopper well. Yeah, Chopper’s in deep shit when his mom calls him by his full name. I had noticed that about the lightsabers being in training mode. That always stood out for the longest time of if the Jedi trained with them, wouldn’t that be risking loss of limb. Though, as we see, that concern is addressed. Love the Ralph McQuarrie design for the creatures. The same ones in the Mandalorian episode with Frog Lady, who I swear, every time I hear her name said, my brain instantly goes to Everybody Loves Raymond. The Imperial March never fails to get to me and is such a perfect way to conclude the calm before the storm. And what a storm it will be.

Ryan

I imagine the reactions to Rex in danger are helped by how he hasn't yet turned up anywhere else in the franchise so far (though he'd probably already have died of old age by the time most of them are set) so there's a real chance that he could bite it at any time here.

Thomas Corp

Yeah, much like Clone Wars, the fate of Rex is a question mark for Jess, hence the reactions that we have received.

Saltire

I never really watched Raymond. Tried a few eps and liked the big fella but I couldn't get into it. I want a Frog Lady series though along with a Ziro The Hutt series - dew it Filoni!

Thomas Corp

Fair enough on the opinion of Everybody Loves Raymond. Like most shows, perhaps not for everyone. I know who you’re talking about with the big fella, and yes, he’s great. Frog Lady and/or Ziro getting a show sounds fun. Oh, by the way, you mentioned last week about Tony Curtis in The Boston Strangler. It made me want to see that movie again and I managed to catch it. I forgot how good a movie it is, Tony’s performance especially.

Saltire

Oh yeah Boston Strangler (like Planes, Trains and Automobiles or Jaws) is one of those films that whenever its on, I try to ensure I see it, no matter how many times I've seen it before. The final scene is phenomenal stuff. We shouldn't forget that the great Henry Fonda is in it too as his foil and is also, as always, fantastic. Glad you 'enjoyed' it - though given the subject matter I'm not sure enjoy is an adequate term! :D

Thomas Corp

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and Jaws are two that will suck me in as well when they’re on tv. Yeah, Henry Fonda too is excellent, as he always is, in The Boston Strangler. The whole cast in that was phenomenal. Right, a bit odd to say “enjoy” with a film like that, or like when my brother and I talked about Once Were Warriors following my brother and my sister in-law seeing it for the first time. We said something like, “Objectively great quality and entertainment value aren’t always mutually exclusive.” Certainly, one can appreciate the quality of a work, like The Boston Strangler, which yes, that final scene makes an impression.

Saltire

Yeah Alan Rickman, like Carrie Fisher or Lance Reddick recently (and I've just restarted The Wire with him too), is one of those celebrity deaths that really hit hard. With Rickman, he was apparently the kindest and gentlest of souls too, who would help young actors as best he could and had a wicked sense of humour (he was great friends with the brilliant Emma Thompson too who is known to be a hoot herself). I really need to make sure I check out some of Rickman's earlier stuff outside of his films when he got into Hollywood. I have a theory with Chopper that he gets away with doing what he does with our crew (and those unfortunate to get in his way!) because Hera sees a lot of her more reckless side in him. He knows not to take it too far with her and Sabine though, and possibly Kanan; but Zeb and Ezra are fair game! :D What the second episode does rather well outside of the action stuff, is show how close our crew have become. Obviously Kanan, Hera and Chopper were the original Spectres before Zeb and later Sabine came on board; but we can also see that Ezra has found his place in this 'family' and is accepted not just for his abilities and quick-thinking, but as a little brother for our crew members. It also solidifies Kanan and Hera being very close and showing how worried Hera is for the resident Jedi on board. They have prepared well and have greatly improved in their combat abilities and force power, but are they ready for a mission like this, even with Ahsoka at their side? You can understand her fear.

Thomas Corp

Yeah, I remember well the day when news broke that Alan had died. I saw that, and said in pure disbelief, “...What?” It did not feel real. My mom was particularly devastated. She loves him as Snape in Harry Potter, and especially Colonel Brandon in the film adaptation of Sense and Sensibility with the equally brilliant Emma Thompson. One of my theatre professors from college also listed Sense and Sensibility as his favorite of Alan’s film work. All the behind-the-scenes stories about Alan, yes, all spoke to what a kind soul he was. He is deeply missed. That’s a good theory about Chopper. It is great to see how close our heroes have become to one another, and how Ezra in particular has been embraced as a member of the family. And yes, Hera is right to be afraid of the mission that Kanan and Ezra depart for. Considering they’re going to Malachor, even with Ahsoka’s accompaniment, Hera’s fear is MORE than well justified.

Lynn Walker

I just love how much you understand Hera. Like I’ve said in previous comments but a lot of people seem to not appreciate Hera enough so it’s nice to see that you love her.

Thomas Corp

The love that Jess has expressed for Hera has been truly wondrous, particularly for like how you said, how much Jess truly understands and appreciates dear Hera. It’s been one of my favorite parts of the reactions to Rebels.

Saltire

Yeah I've never seen Once Were Warriors (Temuera Morrison as well is the lead in that isn't he?) but I know some of the subject matter. Its a bit like the lauded Gary Oldman directed film Nil By Mouth which is apparently fantastic, but so bleak and hard to watch. I try to veer away from the more sobering stuff these days. I remember Requiem For A Dream and sat there for 30 minutes after the creds just staring at the screen. I had to watch a comedy afterwards to get me out of that state. Its one of these films I'm glad I've seen, but never want to see again. Threads is another film like that, Jesus thats a bleak one.

Ryan

Plus we were all still reeling from the death of David Bowie just a couple days earlier.

Saltire

Speaking of Ahsoka, the new trailer is up for the series today. I'm going to have to stay off Star Wars on Reddit for the next month now as I don't want spoiled as I haven't seen the trailer and want to go into it fresh. Downloaded the official poster though, she looks a total badass in it. :D

Thomas Corp

Temuera Morrison is the co-lead with Rena Owen in Once Were Warriors, yes. Very much like you describe “Bleak and hard to watch.” Requiem for a Dream was my favorite film of 2000 and even then, if I’m going to watch it again, I need to prepare myself mentally and emotionally for it because of how emotionally taxing it is. Once Were Warriors is similar in that it’s in my top three of 1994 and there’s prep work that needs to be done before watching it again as it is a brutal watch. My brother says that though he doesn’t regret watching it, especially Rena and Temuera’s superbly brilliant performances, he’s not sure if he ever wants to see the film again. Haven't seen Nil by Mouth or Threads, but I would be interested in seeing them.

Saltire

If you do watch those films, put on a Chopper compilation after, you'll need it mate! :D

Saltire

If anything Hera becomes even more awesome in season 3! She'd have to be in my top 20 Star Wars characters.
