Boy, you really know you've screwed up when the Fourth Doctor chews you out in a deadly serious tone. One of Baker's greatest acting moments.

Azmat Mahmood

Well, that used to happen all the time during the Hinchcliffe era. The reason it hits so hard here is because it's so unexpected and such a sharp contrast from the much more comedic and silly way Tom has been playing the Doctor since The Invisible Enemy really, but especially since The Invasion of Time.

The Captain's little pet, the Polyphase Avatron, is supposed to be a robot parrot -- because what else would a half-robot Pirate Captain be wearing on his shoulder? In an earlier version of the script it could even speak, squawking "Pieces of silicate! Pieces of silicate!" at regular intervals. I knew you'd love seeing K9 have his very own opponent to take on and defeat, for once. The whole story absolutely fizzes with ideas and clever dialogue, and was produced during a crazy-busy period when Douglas Adams was working on both it and the first radio series of The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy simultaneously. Indeed, the script was so ambitious that the head of the BBC's drama department took quite some convincing to let the production team go ahead with it. Adams did admit afterwards that he probably should have put the flying cars and crashing spaceships on radio and had the people standing around in corridors talking on TV, rather than the other way around... :-)

Would have been creepy if the Polyphase squawked "Pieces of meat!" after each victim. Too dark maybe? Maybe one of the lines that crossed Douglas' mind and he hastily crossed it out!

"Hello, K9. Surprised to see me?", "Amazed, Master.", The Doctor and K9, "The Pirate Planet" That is my all-time favorite K9 quote. When we, Classic Who viewers, watched the 13th Doctor's "The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos", the idea of a collection of miniaturised planets seemed quite familiar. I always took that as a nice echo of the situation in this 4th Doctor story. The idea that a ruler, Queen Xanaxia, was suspended in the last few seconds of her life was injected back into "The Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" book (and second radio series) where it was adjusted to be the hereditary Emperor of the Imperial Galactic Government (meaning that all the heirs had died off and the political structure had to be changed). This story was about the planet Calufrax being the second segment. As a name echo, we can recall that one of the planets of the stolen planets needed for Davros's reality bomb in "The Stolen Earth" was Calufrax Minor - an RTD reference to this story. This was a fun story - two segments down! "By the great parrot of Hades, you shall pay with the last drop of your blood!", The Captain, "The Pirate Planet"

K9: - Dog of great wisdom - "Hexagram nine. Hsiao Ch'u. The taming power of the small. Quote, if you are sincere, blood vanishes and fear gives way."
