Ohhhh this is the on I've been waiting for. Very excited to watch this reaction

Ryan

"I promise we'll see each other again." Yeah, turns out you were right about that being ironic foreshadowing, just not quite in the way you were expecting (and yes, the show's crew have confirmed it was a very deliberate choice of words on their part). My one complaint about this one is that you can see Maul's face a bit too clearly in a few shots before the reveal is actually made, and with Sam Witwer doing such a fantastic job of starting with an unrecognizable old and weakened voice and then building it into his usual Maul voice, it would be really cool if everyone could figure it out at their own pace. But his whole appearance kicks so much ass, striking a perfect balance between his slipping just enough good points into his pitch to join the Sith that you believe it would appeal to Ezra, but at the same time Ezra doesn't quite buy it all so he doesn't seem like an idiot who it would be impossible to root for. And then there's the true main event, Ahsoka vs. Vader. First of all, OF COURSE Anakin is such a drama queen that he would arrive standing on top of his TIE Fighter. And you might recall that in the final episode of the Obi Wan show, we saw the left side of his mask get sliced open. You may have seen it in the reverse intended order, but now you have the whole picture of what they were going for with Ahsoka cutting off the right half. And unfortunately one consequence of watching Rebels last is that there can't be any suspense on whether she would survive, as at the time we hadn't seen anything of her after this time period (and of course there's the question of why she wasn't helping out during the OT, which we're actually still waiting on and hopefully her own show will give some answers).

"I'm not scared of you" "then you will die braver than most"

Jenny Chalek

I knew you would probably cry at this one. It's super emotional. Having you to rewatch these with is definitely a treat for me!

Rex and Ahsoka's conversation at the start, is a hark back to their very first conversation when they first met, in the Clone Wars movie. Ezra hearing voices and touching that obelisk throwing them underground, suggests he's very susceptible to the dark side here. In fact in the design of Malachor and the Sith Temple, its reminiscent of Dante's Divine Comedy (and mainly his ideas of the descending circles of Hell) where each level represents our crew sinking further into darkness - and note Ezra goes one level below Ahsoka and Kanan, where he is 'tempted' by an actual Sith in Maul. Note Maul using a warped version of the mentor trope that Yoda says to Luke on first meeting 'away put your weapon, I mean you no harm' to 'please put your weapon away, I mean you no harm' - yeah ok Maul!! Ezra using Jabba as a pseudonym again, not realising Maul worked with Jabba lol! In the original script, Maul was going to tell Ezra that Sidious used to bring him here to explore ancient secrets of the Sith and to train. I think it was subsequently brought up in a comic, which is why Maul knows of this place. Chopper able to deal with Inquisitors, what a little hero he is when he wants to be! Cool seeing a crossguard sabre like Kylo Ren uses, when Ezra picks one up here. Old lightsabres ran 'hot', so to help with cooling, vents across the side of them were installed to stop them overheating. Kylo uses a cracked kyber crystal that is pretty unstable, so found these old designs to be useful for his iconic 'sith' lightsabre. Maul gaining Ezra's trust to try to manipulate him; guess where he learnt that from!?! Such a fun villain.

Saltire

Maul hobbling around as if infirm in the first episode, then jumping around kicking and killing Inquisitors in the second, always playing games! For once they should listen to Chopper when he says its a bad idea to hang around, it truly is for many reasons! The exterior of the temple and its levels were designed to be challenges, the higher up, the greater the challenge. First tackling Inquisitors; Ezra being pushed and pulled one way and another by this place, he is on the precipice; then once they deal with the Inquisitors, Maul needs to be dealt with as he drops the act and reveals his plan; and then Vader, the ultimate challenge for one of them. Sam Witwer kills it as Maul's VA here : "... which I shall use to exact my revenge, on AAAAAAAALL my ENEMIES!!!" - so good. He is so villainous, but also kind of great! Kanan being blinded by Maul (after promising Hera in the last episode, he'd see her again note), is horrible. Something else he now has to learn to deal with, as if Order 66, self-doubt, fear and guilt wasn't bad enough for him!! At least he kicks Mauls ass after, not many outsabre Maul, and none of these opponents were actually blind! "Running away again Lady Tano" - Maul referencing their escape after the Siege Of Mandalore, again people wondered what that meant when this aired. Fits in beautifully now. Ventresses VA voices the holocron. The voice is known as The Presence, an ancient Sith Lord put their essence into it so that future Sith would use the power within it and the Temple. Its never been revealed who the Sith Lord was (and we are talking 4000 years before this time), the origins of Malachor are from a game, and this generator was used to kill off the Sith and Jedi storming the temple, hence why the ground was scorched. In that game Knights Of The Old Republic 2, your character is guided along by a fallen Jedi Master named Kreia, who in the end becomes corrupted and you fight her as the end boss when she becomes Darth Traya; and this is who is heavily hinted at, is the voice we hear here. Enter Vader standing on that TIE, lightsabre activated. He always had a touch of theatricality to him! If I was Ezra I'd have force-pushed him back as he jumped in the air, even just to stall him for a few seconds - he's coming to kill him anyway! The dialogue between Vader and Ahsoka is perfection : "our long-awaited meeting has come at last" - many wondered if Ahsoka would ever meet Vader from when she was brought into the Clone Wars show. And the "I'm no Jedi" line from her shows what a boss she's become! Filoni calls her the fearless Jedi, and we could see why throughout her story. When she duelled Anakin on Mortis, she did the same move on Anakin when under the spell of The Brother to recover her sabre. Here she cuts the mask off him. What is slightly annoying now, is that we've seen Vader's mask be severed in the Kenobi series, which takes away from this fight slightly. However, both were done to show Anakin underneath. While we got Haydn's Anakin appearing in the Kenobi series, here we have Matt Lanter's Clone Wars Anakin, and it hits doubly hard, because this is Ahsoka's Anakin, and hearing him say to her through Matt's voice "now you will die..." is hearbreaking to her. She won't leave him as she thinks she can save him, but he won't be saved yet. Lucas and Filoni believe in the poetry of Star Wars, and I heard this about the mask stuff, which ties it all together with Vader and the mask. Obi-Wan sliced the left side, Ahsoka the right; but only Luke could remove the mask. Thats why I think that scene was included in the Obi-Wan series also. When I first watched this, I and most thought Ahsoka had stumbled to her death, and Ezra's painful look of acknowledgement to Rex when they get back, is gut-wrenching; even if we do know now she makes it. Hera's look of horror at Kanan too as he arrives back knows this episode cost them greatly. Kanan is blinded, Ahsoka gone, and Ezra is teetering towards the darkside, fueled by his pain of what happened here, and him looking to bring down the Sith in vengeance, as he opens the holocron in the final shot. When most more casual viewers think of Rebels, these tend to be the episodes they think of. One of the best episodes of Star Wars out there. As you note Jess, the music too is top notch again, as they use variances of Ahsoka's Theme during her duel with Vader, and in the final sequence. Wonderful. Many thanks for these Jess, its great seeing you go on the journey of Rebels and see for yourself what a gem of a series it is.

These reactions are the highlight of my week, Jess. Even when my mental health is absolutely kicking my ass, these are always such a great chance to escape and experience one of my favourite shows all over again with you. I'm so happy to hear that you've been getting a lot of love and support from the fandom, we all know Star Wars fans can be a little toxic sometimes, but it seems like you've cultivated a little community, especially here on Patreon of people who just really love the franchise and adore your reactions and insights on it. There's still so much more amazing stuff to come with Rebels which I can't wait to watch with you and everyone else here. Much love to all!

Thomas Corp

Now we have arrived at my favorite episodes of Rebels. You speak of being overwhelmed by stress and nervousness going into these episodes. That was a shared experience for all of us. Oh, I had a time seeing these episodes when they premiered shortly before my birthday seven years ago; a PHENOMENAL birthday treat by the way. That experience is matched, and in some ways, surpassed by how lovely it is to share these episodes with you, Jess. Seeing Malachor in the new canon was emotional. I laugh at your comment on being nervous about who else is interested in Malachor. That would include me. I am most interested in Malachor. I have a great passion for the Sith and Malachor is a significant planet of Sith history, and a planet where fond memories exist. I also laughed at your good comparison to those spinning fairy toys of the nineties, leading me to quip, “Spinning doth remain a good trick.” Of the Inquisitors that I know, the Eighth Brother introduced here, has thus far made the least appreciable impression, though he does get a fantastic death scene, so he’s got that going for him. Yes, there was much JOY in seeing the return of our beloved Darth Maul, well, my beloved Darth Maul anyway. Like your experience, the scene is dark, thus, it is difficult to see him right away. But Sam Witwer’s voice is too iconic, though I like how he plays up an old and feeble sound to it, despite only being in his earlyish fifties, give or take. And his mention of his mother, and his brother’s death is the final bit of proof, and I loved your reaction to that moment. Still don’t know how Maul ended up on the planet, though I suspect there was some conflict with the Dragon Queen. It was a highlight of you and Kanan being in the same camp, roasting marshmallows and not trusting Maul. I liked your analysis on that dynamic. It is great how Maul is not without fair points. It is after all, like a wise old woman once said, “One quickly learns that the Jedi Code does not give all the answers. If you are to truly understand, then you will need the contrast, not adherence to a single ideal.” and one of my favorite lines from the Emperor in Revenge of the Sith, “If one is to understand the great mystery, one must study all its aspects, not just the dogmatic narrow view of the Jedi. If you wish to become a complete and wise leader, you must embrace a larger view of the Force.” And then there’s Maul’s points of pragmatism when dealing with your enemies. Setting aside how dangerous that is for a Jedi, Maul’s not incorrect that showing hesitation or mercy can be harmful in the long run. His killing of the Seventh Sister is a memorable moment, particularly for how you see he cuts her in half, only he aims higher because he knows one can survive bisection, and it gives me a dark laugh. Likewise, his killing of the Fifth Brother is a great moment, and I love how upon being disarmed, the Fifth Brother has just enough time for that to sink in, before Maul sinks his blade into the Fifth Brother. A most startling moment when Maul blinds Kanan. Your reaction to that stood out. I love how you loved Kanan pulled it together. Lovely to see Chopper help him, and your own reaction to that was lovely. All of what has happened has now done a number on Ezra as evidenced by his being able to open the Sith holocron. A situation that Kanan is going to need to keep an eye on going forward.

Which brings us to, as was said in the episode, the “long awaited meeting.” First, I LIVED for Darth Vader and the entrance he made, as well as his BADASS line to Ezra, “Then you will die braver than most.” You said your heart was breaking, Jess, EVERYONES’ hearts shattered at this scene. It almost didn’t feel real, hearing James Earl Jones and Ashley Eckstein’s voices in the same scene. I wondered if I was even alive seeing it for the first time. Both were phenomenal. Ashley got me the most at her line of beginning to believe who was behind the mask. Just the way she has her line delivery is such that you can just hear how she’s struggling not to just weep. And how it is countered by James and his COLD delivery of the line, “Anakin Skywalker was WEAK. I destroyed him.” You mention Rex if he were there. I don’t even want to THINK about that. Again, you sum it up perfectly how phenomenal a fight though it is, you can’t properly enjoy it due to overwhelming sadness. Then comes the moment when Vader’s mask is split open, and we hear Matt Lanter as Anakin. And it is James and Matt’s voices combined. The heart shattered further when Ahsoka assures Anakin that she won’t leave him, not this time. And how you see the sentiment register with Anakin before Vader coldly replies, “Then you will DIE.” It twists the heart of Kanan, Ezra, and Chopper forced to leave Ahsoka, especially Kanan sounding like he’s a hair away from an emotional breakdown. Your reaction to their reunion to the rest of the Shady Bunch got me, especially the heartbreaking look that was on Rex’s face when he sees Ahsoka did not return. I KNEW that would get to you, Jess. Now to talk about the music. Kevin Kiner delivers outstanding music in these episodes. Excellent atmospheric music, great battle music. I love the flutter of Duel of the Fates when Maul drops the act. It is several daggers straight to the heart, the music during the Vader versus Ahsoka battle. Particularly how Kevin utilizes his work and John’s work equally. Specifically, the use of Ahsoka’s Theme and The Imperial March, both aided by suitably dramatic choir and what sounds like war drums. Then there’s my favorite musical cue of Kevin’s in Rebels, the music that plays over the final montage, the moment that stands out the most being when Vader is limping away from the temple. Two perfect episodes reacted to SO PERFECTLY, Jess. To talk about your thanks to us, speaking for myself, it has been my privilege and my pleasure both to share this show with you. It is my honor. And it warms the heart to hear you say you appreciate the love that we have shown you for your reactions. Also, nice to hear your recovery from the surgery continues to go well. You say it’s still ongoing but clocking your outfit and the color of your nails, this was filmed about a month ago, so I hope that in the time hence, the recovery has been even better. Thank you, so, so very much for the BEUATIFUL reaction today, Jess. I loved it so much.

Thomas Corp

Excellent comparison to Dante. Darth Maul channeling both Yoda and his master is great. He learned from the best. Love how he doesn’t even bat an eye at the Jabba business.

Thomas Corp

Wish I had time to play KOTOR and/or KOTOR II again. The second especially, it’d be a real treat to spend time with that wise old woman again. Re Vader’s entrance, the Dark Side of the Force is a pathway to much theatricality some consider to be unnatural. I would say the mask being split open on Obi-Wan adds to the scene here, enhances it. If nothing else, the poetry, how the stanzas rhyme with each other is beautiful. Seven years later, these episodes continue to pack the emotional wallop.

Thomas Corp

Oh, I completely agree. Even the times when my brain is being a particularly cruel mistress, Jess and her videos provide such relief and comfort. Last week was especially bad for me, and Jess helped so much. Lovely to hear Jess and her videos are helpful to you as well in that regard. And yes, it is most wonderful to see Jess be embraced and welcomed by the Star Wars fandom as she has.

Ryan

“A situation that Kanan is going to need to keep an eye on going forward.” Go to your room and think about what you did.

Ryan

She posted on Twitter recently that she’d been able to breathe for several days in a row, so that seems to have passed the major hill.

Lynn Walker

These episodes are not my favourite but I really enjoyed watching a long one with you. Your Rebels’ reactions are my absolute favourite - its so refreshing to see a reactor so clearly understand the characters.

YodatheHobbit

"What FUN! What FUN!" "Oh boyeeee! OH BOYEEEEE!" Your FACE when Maul showed up! It was simply a joy trying to keep up with the changing of facial expressions, and determining where your mind is was going, hahaha. Thank you for reacting to this show. This is the point every watcher of reactions is always eagerly anticipating. Part 2 was actually the thing which made me a fan of this show. I didn't understand just how important Rebels was, or that Ahsoka was even a part of it, when I watched, so I watched Ahsoka v Vader out of context, I think in another's reaction on YouTube first, and then after being impressed with that, it made me watch ALL of the rest of the show.

Dave van der Kuyp

Hi! Loved the reaction, as always. Nearly none of the other reactors I have seen share my focus for the story as the #1 priority when it comes to these things. Not to make it negative for anyone else (each person brings their own thing to the table that I can appreciate), but I generally don't get distracted by camera techniques or CGI or anything when I'm watching a movie or show. It's telling me a story and I want to lose myself in that story. That other stuff generally just gets saved into the back of my mind and when it is over, then it shoots to the top and I get to the: "wow that was gorgeous." phase of my internal review. And your 'we'll talk about it after' mentality is something I greatly appreciate and love. Your videos are as non-toxic as anything and are little islands of peace and calm and positivity in my life. Especially on these platforms where tribalism rules. Thank you for all that you do, and I do hope everything works out for you health-wise too.

Saltire

I agree, I'd love to play those KOTOR games again too. I however took a break from games for a couple of years (been playing since the Atari console days in which one of my first games was Empire Strikes Back!) but have been catching up since on all the games I've been missing out on over the last few years, so its doubtful I'll ever get back to KOTOR until the new one is released - whenever that will be. Been thinking about starting up The Old Republic as it kind of reminds me of Star Wars : Galaxies which I also loved, but not bit the bullet on that one just yet. I can live with the other mask cutting scene now echoing this, as it was a great moment in the Obi-Wan series, and like everything thats best about the lore, there is poetry to be found everywhere within it. Yes, I've seen Rebels through hundreds of times now and these episodes always deliver still, even if I know every frame, its so good. There is a lot of fun with this show, with our crew and their shenanigans at this time; but it does pack a punch when it wants to.

Saltire

I remember hearing that Ashley Eckstein broke down when she read the script and her lines during the encounter, and she puts everything into that performance. She's a very understated voice actor, but she has done a marvellous job voicing Ahsoka over the years, from her enthusiastic early teenage years, to what happened to her throughout the war as sees all thats going on, and through to here, where Ahsoka is the finished article and a Jedi Master in all but name - even though she says she's "NO JEDI!!!". Its a great piece that Kevin employs over the ending, called It's Over Now echoing Kanan's dialogue with Ezra at the end. Its one of my favourite Rebels pieces, but some of the stuff in season's 3 and 4 at least equal this; and if you've never heard the alternate unaired version, I think it might actually be even better. Called "Where the Sun sails and the Moon walks", this was composed by Sean Kiner and if Ahsoka ever dies one day (if Filoni ever kills her off which is doubtful!!! :P ), then this would be a fitting send off for her I'd feel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Y5hnRQN0vw Side note, you guys know Jess's stuff far better than I and you think she filmed this about a month ago? Shame as I was wanting to ask a request for episode 3x6 for her to play the credits at the end, as there is a couple of fun Easter eggs in there.

Thomas Corp

I wouldn’t doubt Ashley went through the emotions reading the script. Yes, she is excellent as Ahsoka. I know the alternate piece of music that you’re referring to. I listened to both the piece in the show and the alternate piece by themselves the other day. Both are phenomenal. The latter would be a worthy send-off for Ahsoka. If in fact, that day ever comes. Concerning knowing Jess’s stuff, that’s more my brain making note of the outfits she wears and when I see it is the same outfit in such and such reaction, in this case, it looks like the same outfit she sported in the premiere of Marvel’s Secret Invasion, about a month ago. I don’t even actively do it most of the time, as I say, my brain just makes note of things like that, and it does give me the idea of when stuff was likely filmed. This is in conjunction with her own advice, which is to clock her nails, specifically the color of her nails. I know the episode you’re talking about as there’s been a suggestion I’ve wanted to make for that reaction as well, but I didn’t wish to say anything that could potentially be a spoiler/didn’t quite know how to phrase it without giving certain things away.

Thomas Corp

Yeah, I’m behind on playing video games. Never did play much of the Atari. Did play a fair amount of the NES at my great aunt’s house, years ago. I am chomping at the bit for the KOTOR remake. A phenomenal moment in the Obi-Wan show when Vader’s mask is split open. That was an EMOTIONAL night that night I first saw it. It is the case of when something’s so excellent/you love it so much, it will get you every time. Like when Jess watched Revenge of the Sith, I rewatched it to prepare. I was on the edge of my seat. I of course knew what was going to happen because I’ve seen it so many times, yet it still got to me.

Thomas Corp

I love that, what you said, “Your videos are as non-toxic as anything and are little islands of peace and calm and positivity in my life.” That is a most excellent description of Jess and her videos. I concur most sincerely.

Saltire

Yeah I think we spoke at the time when watching Obi-Wan, but that series was a turning point for me with Hayden Christensen's performances doing Anakin and Vader. He absolutely nailed it, and it showed that he does have good chemistry with Ewan and it finally shone through when let off the leash. On the ROTS rewatch with Jess, I found it interesting to note both Jess and I found myself, really tearing up watching Plo Koon get shot down. When I first saw the film it was all a sad event seeing Order 66, but we got to know Plo in Clone Wars, when Filoni subsequently developed him, and its one of the great Star Wars tragedies, that someone like him went out like that; and from his "Plo's Bros" too... :( Its similar with Return Of The Jedi now. I've said it before here, that Anakin would not make my top 40 Star Wars characters, but after he kills your boy, and with all the media we've had with him now, its difficult not to get moved as he comes back to the light before he perishes and sees the error of his ways. It never used to hit me like that before watching that movie back in the 80's.

Saltire

Ok mate, we'll see in the edit whether it gets put in; its no biggie but just a nice little touch to finish off that episode that I think she'll love.

Thomas Corp

Yeah, Hayden and Ewan always had fantastic chemistry, even if they didn’t have the best writing, and it was nice to be on full display in the Obi-Wan show. Plo Koon was always interesting in that I read comics, books, and the visual dictionaries when the prequel trilogy was released, so there was a bond with Plo because of that, and it hurt in the theater seeing him shot down. To then see him in Clone Wars, how much he cared for the Clones, and the bond with the character increasing, the scene hurt infinitely worse seeing it again. I believe I commented on the reaction itself that when we got to that scene, and Jess yelled out, “NOOOOOO!!!!!” That got me in the heart bad enough that I had to pause momentarily just to cry and collect myself. Similarly, I agree with how much harder it hits you, Vader's scene in Jedi where he takes out my man, Palps, and the subsequent scene with Luke. Between the passage of time, combined with like you said, all the media of Vader that we’ve gotten over the years, the scene is impossible not to be moved by. Even if one doesn’t hold the highest opinion of Anakin, like you’ve said you do not, that scene is one that gets me more than it did when I was a kid.

Andrew Sitek

I've been watching all your clone wars and Rebels up until now on Youtube and felt it was time to show some extra support and join Patreon for this full length one. Been loving all your reactions and I always get excited when I see them pop up in my feed. Glad to know you're doing better and the Star Wars community, while it loves fighting over Star Wars, is a supportive community so I'm glad you're seeing that as well. Keep it up
