This was a standout finale. It hurts seeing Negan break Ginny’s heart so that she leaves with Perlie. I hadn’t anticipated the reveal of Ginny’s dad being one of the people Negan killed. It is great how Perlie seeing and hearing this, you can tell it influences his decision to claim that he killed Negan. I had called from the first episode that this New Babylon was likely more sinister than they professed; something smelled rotten in the state of Denmark on that one. Now they have their sights set on the methane, giving Perlie pause. As you say, the Walking Dead universe has been filled with numerous groups, largely unsavory, who seek to gain control, and go to aggressive ends when that control is threatened. It is as Emperor Palpatine once said, “Remember back to your early teachings. All who gain power are afraid to lose it. Even the Jedi.” As for Negan, I like how he started putting the pieces together, particularly how he deduces Maggie’s intentions less through what she says, but how she says it. It is refreshing, as you say, how self-aware Negan is about what he did. And yes, I do believe, at least from Negan and the audience’s perspective, he and Maggie could have teamed up and figured out how to save Hershel had Maggie been honest about the whole shebang. What he takes the greater exception to is Maggie’s deception, which I would be the same. I LOVED his line where he says that she can’t get over it, nor does she have too. I would add she doesn’t have too if she doesn’t want to. A striking moment when Hershel yells at his mom and accuses her of being more obsessed with revenge against Negan rather than caring for him. It felt like Hershel even gets largely why Maggie has the mindset, but in yelling at her as he did, it does show a spotlight on how it has been harmful to him. Now I’m not saying I don’t get why Maggie has that attitude, and I hear what you’re saying in that you would relate to her in that regard. You say how it is easier to hate someone rather than forgive them. And that’s the twisted thing. You say how in a way, she attained revenge. In my experience, the most powerful form of revenge towards an enemy is forgiveness; you demonstrate they no longer hold any power over you. And of course, Maggie cannot do that. Worse still, how Negan has changed. It feels like she can’t fully reconcile the monster he was with the strives toward redemption that he’s made, without being unable to prevent the trauma and hatred that exists within her to surface, thus leading to a vicious cycle. And with the revenge she got, it feels like the line Mike had in Better Call Saul, “You know what happened. The question is, can you live with it?” which her final lines hint she’s going to be doing something about that. The Croat proved disturbing in that he says how he “understands” Negan’s actions toward him as it was because he disobeyed orders, not because of the HORRIFIC things he did to that poor girl. The Dama, I believe it was, is setting herself up to be a memorable villain. I had a small moment of solidarity with Negan when he stated that he favors gin, leading me to say, “Good man, Negan! Good man!” You are correct that being at the mercy of the Dama and the Croat, being forced to become again the monster that he was, is perhaps the worst hell for Negan, thus, Maggie inadvertently attained a most poetic revenge. And I don’t think Negan would even hold that much against her for it, especially seeing as Maggie seemed under the impression that she was sending Negan to his death. That final shot that was a most interesting homage to Bergman’s Persona was great. This was a lovely time that was had these past few weeks in sharing this season of Dead City with you, Jess. I thank you for how lovely it all was.

Another thing that I believe I failed to talk about in my long rant was the narrative of Negan and what happened with Annie intwined in this show. And how it directly relates to the want of revenge. I think not only does Negan understand Maggie, I think he oddly respects her for having the strength to not tear him limb from limb. She struggles with it every day and is utterly consumed by it but she hasn't done it. He was faced with something horrific happening to the person he loves and what did he do? He brutally murdered the men who did it. There's a very interesting parallel there. Now, I don't really blame him but I think Negan is very aware of the rage he stores inside and what happens when it gets released. I believe in those moments of killing those men, he felt maybe a taste of how Maggie has felt all this time. Except he is still alive by Maggie's (and Rick's) mercy which I will continue to say is the harder route to take for people like them. I've always believed in my core that Glenn is the strongest or close to the strongest character ever on this show. Because it was in his nature to forgive (even when he really shouldn't have my god) and help people. People who did terrible things. People who get easily corrupted by this world no matter how badass they seem, I really believe are weaker. And the funny thing is.....I think Negan agrees with that sentiment. I think he's well aware that Maggie has every right to treat him like he treated those men that hurt Annie. And if she can't let go of what happened, that's not on her. That's on him. I think given his first hand experience with feeling that rage when you watch someone you love so very deeply get brutalized made him respect Maggie so much more. Does he wish she wouldn't have lied? Probably but at the end of the day, I really don't think he blames her at all.

Yes, that is a most intriguing parallel to Negan and what happened to Annie compared to how Maggie has fought long and hard to, as you say, not tear Negan limb from limb. I would say, Jess, you are right on the money about Negan respecting Maggie in that regard. He is in a situation where his wife is harmed, he instantly goes for revenge. He’s very self-aware of his failings, rage-wise. Maggie, and by extension you brought up Rick, by contrast, showed mercy, which yes, is the far more difficult path to take, especially in this world. You mention the sentiment of feeling Glenn and people like him are the stronger ones in this world, I would agree that Negan likely agrees with that. After going through the experience of what happened to Annie, combined with his traveling with Maggie and how she doesn’t try to kill him in his sleep, it has likely increased his respect for her, I agree. I think the only thing he was mad at Maggie for was that she lied to him. Like he said, they could have come up with a plan had she shot straight with him. Or hell, supposing Maggie told him upfront that the Croat wanted Negan in exchange for Hershel and say Maggie didn’t want to team up with Neagan, I think Negan would have willingly let himself be traded, so long as he knew that Annie, Joshua, and Ginny would be cared for. Would I be wrong in thinking that? Perhaps, but I think Negan would have agreed to it because he owed Maggie that much and he would have likely harbored no ill will.

As someone who stopped watching Walking Dead after Season 3 and gave up following news about it completely shortly after Negan's introduction, it's a bit surreal to see all the fans talking about him like he's this super nice, fun guy who everyone loves, and I can only assume he went through some of the most incredible character development ever after murdering Glen in cold blood.

Thomas Corp

He has gone through significant character development, yes. I would NOT, however, go so far as to call Negan super nice. Fun, sure, provided you aren’t his enemy, or even if you are, he can still be fun, provided you don’t give him reason to hurt you. As to everyone loving Negan, well, that’s down to personal preference. I’m a villains guy, so I love him and he’s second to Samantha Morton as Alpha for my favorite character in The Walking Dead universe.

He's a complex character. I wouldn't describe him as nice or in my opinion all that sympathetic. He has come in clutch and has helped the community. Which is more what I recognize and in my opinion the best thing about him is that he's self aware about all the damage he has done. He does not make excuses or play the "oh but I'm good now" card. I personally wouldn't describe him as fun like the majority of the fandom would. But I'm in the severe minority. He can have funny moments but sometimes his jokes are at the expense of the trauma he's caused people and to me, I almost always sit in silence disgusted while most other reactors laugh. So I know I'm in the minority with that. But all that being said, Jeffrey does an impeccable job.
