Will you please react to the live action Little Mermaid? It’s out on digital today 🤞🏾🥹

Mark McKeown

Movies are normally done on a poll basis, so I'm sure Jess can add it to the next poll :)

chaos_witch

Yeah that would be great! She's already reacted to the other live-actions so I hope she'll add this to the poll since this is my favourite ^_^

Thrawn originally appeared in the tie-in Star Wars novels written during those long periods between movies. These were all officially made non-canon when Disney acquired the franchise, to much controversy as a lot of fans had gotten just as attached to those stories as the actual movies. So as you’d imagine, it was a pretty huge deal when the trailers for this season revealed that Thrawn was being added back into canon, raising hopes that it might happen for other aspects that had originated in the novels, though so far he’s still the only one. He’s played by Lars Mikkelson, the older brother of Mads, who’s also known as the Russian President in House of Cards and Magnussen in Sherlock. He’s also been confirmed to still be playing Thrawn when he finally makes his much-foreshadowed appearance in Filoni’s live action shows.

Six months have passed since Malachor, we are now 2 years out from A New Hope. Ezra has had a growth spurt. We don't know how he got his green lightsabre, but green sabres are my favourite colour when they have this specific hue, a darker tint to them like Ezra's here and Luke's. Yoda's green sabre is lighter in colour (as was Ahsoka's first ones) and doesn't stand out for me much, so I vastly prefer this sabre colour. And it looks more threatening in interiors. Ezra getting his own brief corridor scene, showing how he has vastly grown in power in that 6 months. You almost feel sorry for the stormtroopers, who are mere mortals like the rest of us, being pitted against a strong force-user who knows what they are doing. Like Maul's corridor scene in TCW, or Vader's in Rogue One. Terrifying to the poor sods trapped with them! We see a lot of dark stuff in Star Wars, but I might just think what Ezra does to that Walker pilot, is the darkest of the lot. Zeb calls it a Jedi Mind Trick, its way more intrusive than that. Its a Sith power called Mind Domination, and to completely take over a mind, do your bidding, then have that person commit suicide, is dark. Last time we saw Hondo was in the Lasat episode where Zeb finds Lira San, and Hondo got captured. He's been in jail ever since! Sabine's hair change in this season is my least favourite of her looks, however her new colour scheme on her armour is very nice, and she has a convor owl on her left pauldron as a memorial to Ahsoka. Zeb has Big Bongo the Joopa, who almost ate him on his new look, and Hera has her Captain's rank insignia now on her shoulder. Kanan has now what the fandom calls his 'depression beard' which really suits him. The eye markings on his mask are Mandalorian (same as on Rex's helmet), so one can assume Sabine painted it. Love Bendu, the 60 foot force-wielding space moose! Note how he opens the Sith holocron with not a care in the world. He's a force of nature, a vergence in the force like Anakin is, though he cannot be influenced by the light or the dark side, he's 'the one in the middle'. His name comes from an original term for the Jedi. Before they became the Jedi Knights, originally they were to be called the Jedi-Bendu. We've had one 'Doctor' in David Tennent appear in Star Wars, now we have another, with the great Tom Baker playing Bendu, the best of the old school 'Doctors'. Beautifully powerful voice and diction, just like with Kallus's VA David Oyelowo. Its kind of great that you are watching Tom Baker in Doctor Who just now and hearing him here in Rebels too! Congratulations Jess, you have finally met Thrawn, complete with his boss theme!! This is as severe a threat to our Rebels, as Vader would be. The Empire is known to be very xenopohobic and note every officer they have is human, except for Thrawn, who is a Grand Admiral at that, the highest rank in the Imperial Navy. For an alien to be promoted to the equivalent of an Admiral Of The Fleet, suggests this is a person who gets things done. You have summed him up well so far in these brief first thoughts on him, and you can gauge more on his character as we progress through the series. Governor Pryce is with him. She is Lothal's Governor. Back in season 1 it was always mentioned that Pryce wasn't around on Lothal and was elsewhere. There were comics made around that time and she was teamed up with Thrawn there, so she was busy with him, and Minister Tua who we saw, was the bureaucrat that tried and failed to deal with our Spectres. As a Brit I was astonished to learn the other week, that Pryce's VA is American. Usually I can tell when an American is doing a British accent, even with the better attempts, like Stephen Stanton doing a passable Peter Cushing for Tarkin. But with Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, I couldn't tell the difference and thought it was a genuine English accent. Kanan has got rid of his armour in his look now and wearing his full lightsabre in public. Those six months, while he has blocked himself off from everyone and allowed Ezra to slip towards the darkside, look like he's been reflecting on who he is and all that he has seen. However he has become a bit lost again and needs Bendu's help to get him back on course, and back into the fight. Lovely scene where he realises what he's become, full of anger, grief and fear, and frees himself as he accepts this, as Bendu tells him 'if you can see yourself, you'll never be truly blind, Kanan Jarrus, Jedi Knight'. Its very much a lesson we can all try to take on board to get over our own faults and regrets, and you articulated well, the journey you are currently undergoing Jess about how you are trying to be self-aware more of how you react and go through your life. Its something I think more us, myself definitely included, should take more attention as it will allow us like Kanan here to accept our faults and begin to move forward and be better people. Going back to the show, Rebels is much more character-driven show than Clone Wars and moments like when Kanan comes back to the crew and back for Ezra, really bring out the tears, they are incredibly moving. Rex showing when it comes to droids, he is still the king of taking them out! That droid was a real monster! Ezra is very cocksure in these episodes, as if he now believes the things he's learnt from the Sith holocron have made him almost unbeatable; but his world falls down like a house of cards when he loses the Phantom and things start to turn south putting his life in danger. Its a message about the darkside and what Kanan says is bang on; Ezra may gain significant power in his abilities quicker using the darkside, but there is no foundation there and when things start to faulter, a darksider can unravel. The lightside is more patient and it is about looking inward (hence no need for therapy when Jedi are supposed to do that themselves if they are to become Knights), and once they find that inner balance, they can move forward without fear. Poor Chopper, he has PTSD about Y-Wings with being shot down in one in the Clone War, and now he is thrown into one by Zeb, like a toddler being put in a high chair! The Kanan rescuing Ezra scene has a lot of symbolism. Kanan is bathed in light, Ezra the dark; and what they say to each other is essentially Kanan telling Ezra to let go of the darkside, and come back to the light, to him. He hasn't been there for him these past six months, and Ezra has wandered off the path; but he is back to guide him to try to help him become a Jedi once more. I'm glad you mentioning the animation again Jess as Rebels gets criticised generally because it isn't in the style of Clone Wars due to its budget in comparison. However what they do with this graphical engine at times is magnificent and using the retro Ralph McQuarrie and Colin Cantwell designs, helps this series stand out to where at times it can be jaw-droppingly beautiful. RIP Phantom, you were a fine dropship for our crew! The writer who suggested to 'kill off' the Phantom became known on the team as 'The Phantom Menace'! :)

There’s recently been a bit of a push for “Grey Jedi,” though the best anyone can seem to describe them is those jackasses who make a big deal about being “not political” but then inevitably side with the bad guys (to keep it within Star Wars, think Benecio Del Toro in The Last Jedi).

Thomas Corp

Season three surely started with a bang. I am pleased to see you most enjoyed it. It is always a pleasure to see our old pal Hondo again. I love that you continue to love seeing him. Startling to see Ezra in this premiere, especially the move he made with the walker that even Hondo’s a bit taken aback by. And of course, we see Ezra has been using the holocron. Ezra listening to the voice of a wise old woman whispering into his ear. That brings back some Star Wars video game memories. I loved your analysis of Ezra and his dipping his toe in the Dark Side waters. He gets a check on his mission of the Y-wings. Love those ships. Only real drawback to the Y-wings, of course, is that they are a touch sluggish. My brother, I remember, chaffed at that a little bit when he had the missions where you had to fly the Y-wings in video games. It hurts seeing Kanan in the state he’s in. He goes through it. Recovering from Malachor, Ezra said what he said. And now he’s discovered this unknown creature on the planet. I feel for him because the Bendu is completely out of left field for Kanan. He didn’t see that one coming. The Bendu is one of the more fascinating elements of Rebels. He seems a creature who is seraphic in nature. Or at least connected to a higher plain of the Force even more so than the great Master Yoda. Tom Baker brings gravitas to the role. Intriguing how he is in the middle, Force-wise. His lessons to Kanan are great, and your reactions to that were wonderful. Much like your analysis of Ezra, your analysis of Kanan was wonderful, and it warms the heart that the connection with his journey is resonating within you. No apologies are necessary, Jess. I always am willing to listen to you when you have the more personal discussions in your videos. On the villainous front, we now meet Governor Arihnda Pryce, a fantastic Imperial character. It is great how her look is clearly inspired by dear Cate Blanchett as Irina Spalko from the fourth Indiana Jones film. Shame that character’s theme could not have carried over as John created a most wonderfully sinister and seductive villainous theme for Irina. Could have been great for Pryce. I loved your protectiveness of Chopper and your continued love for Rex. And now, to gush about one of the BIGGEST aspects of these episodes. Something that was heavily advertised in advance which caused Star Wars fans of a certain age/fans well versed in the expanded universe of old to have a collective stroke. The reintroduction into canon of a character that’s high on my brother and I’s list of favorite Star Wars characters, Grand Admiral Thrawn. Full name: Mitth‘raw’nuruodo. (Still haven’t heard word on how to pronounce that by the way.) Created by the author Timothy Zahn. First debuted in the year of my birth, 1991, and he was the main antagonist of the acclaimed Thrawn trilogy of books. This led to him becoming a most beloved character. I remember when Disney bought the franchise, he was one such character my brother and I anticipated/hoped for, and there was the hype of who the FUCK was going to play him, and I am happy to say Lars Mikkelsen is so perfectly cast and exceeds all expectations. Kevin Kiner provides an astounding organ theme for him that fits the character like a glove. I was curious given his being mentioned in The Mandalorian how your reaction to him would be. And I know I’ve been hyping him up in the comments whenever he got mentioned. Your reaction to finally meeting dear Thrawn was most excellent. What’s even better is that he does not have the largest role in this two-parter. It only provides you with the looking price, giving you but a taste of what he is capable of. You mention how others are playing checkers, Thrawn is out here playing chess. It made me say, “Ah, to play chess with Thrawn. ‘Twould be a most relishable experience.” I LOVE that you are intrigued by Thrawn, Jess, and I thank you for the most wonderful reaction.

Love the green saber. Of course, I’m a Sith man, so I would have a red saber. Were I a Jedi, the darker green is what I would go for. Yes, another Doctor joining the Star Wars universe. I want so badly to see Peter Capaldi in Star Wars someday. In fact, he was a top pick my brother and I had for Thrawn, one, because we thought he’d be great in the role, two, because we both just really want Peter to be in Star Wars somehow. The whole concept of the Bendu is most fascinating. Lars Mikkelsen is perfect as Thrawn, his theme is wonderfully ominous, especially how there’s the main motif, which is the four to eight recurring notes, sounding like a dirge-like dies irae, dies illa, and it’s awesome. Pryce feels like an underrated villain. At least, I don’t hear much in the way of fans singing her praises. Mary is fantastic in the role. Rex is great. I love there’s the one moment he sounds like me where he gets particularly mad, and yells, “That tears it!” I say that a bit myself. Poor Chopper and the Y-wings.

Ryan

After seeing The Fabelmans, Irina Spalko’s hairstyle became pretty unavoidable and really made me question what things Spielberg was working through in the movie. And it has to be mentioned, the Y-Wings are specifically said to be going to Dodonna, meaning they’re the very same ones that will become Gold Squadron and fight the Death Star, all being shot down but playing an invaluable role in securing its destruction.

Yeah Grey Jedi is a term for those that want it all. The idea that they can somehow master the lightside and the dark - oh another thing that they refer to is that Mace Windu is somehow this because of 'Vapaad' which he somehow is able to master, flittering between the light and the dark when he fights - to explain how he has a purple lightsabre. Do they honestly think that the Jedi would have the leader of the High Council being ok with using the darkside in his duelling? They just don't understand what Lucas was going for with his definitions for the Ashla and the Bogan. Bendu here is an interesting one, he claims to be the one in the middle - is he though? We can explore this later I suppose, but if he was, then I'm sure Filoni would have to have spoken with Lucas on this as he tries to stay as close to Lucas's vision as possible for the franchise; and it may be explained that since Bendu is a vergence and a unique one-off, he can flitter between the light and the dark.

We really need to see purple for a darkside colour. I was looking at a vid last night of the characters that Hasbro are bringing out this year (and the Ghost which though its $500 I'm severely tempted to buy!!), and one of them was Revan wielding a red blade and a purple one. I believe we are going to see an orange sabre soon too, though for spoiler reasons I haven't looked too much into it; but purple would be something else a bit different than red for darksiders, and it would look boss. After all why should Windu be the sole lightsabre wielder using a purple blade. My ideal sabre would be Count Dooku's hilt with the Luke/Ezra green tint; oh how I wish it was that colour for Dooku's blade in Tales Of The Jedi. Interesting note that Lars Mikkelsen voices Thrawn too in the Danish version of Rebels. And yes I HATE Pryce! Another reactor I follow detests Tarkin, and anytime he appears on the screen, she'll shout loudly "NO!!! - Get off the screen!" which I always find amusing. I'm similar with Pryce!!! ;)

Need to see The Fabelmans. Any of you doing Barbenheimer this week? :P

Thomas Corp

The Fabelmans is my favorite film of last year. I can wait until Barbie hits home video before I see it. That’s not meant as an insult to it, rather I just personally don’t have the desire to see it in the theater. I would like to see Oppenheimer in the theater. Small problems in that I can’t drive, and there’s no Imax theater close by. Last I heard, my sister in-law saw Barbie. No word if she liked it or not. My brother hasn’t seen either yet, last I heard, though he did see Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Minor quibbles notwithstanding, he quite enjoyed it.

Saltire

Yes Thomas I've really come full circle on Y-Wings. Used to think they were a bit ungainly in their design back in the day, but there is a shot in the finale of Clone Wars where Rex places the shovel back on the side of the ship after he and Ahsoka buried Jesse and the other clones (trying not to type that without weeping slightly!), and the profiles of the Y-Wing they used to get off the Venator, was beautiful. So 1970's, and sleek. In fact I think I prefer them over X-Wings now for rebel ships, even if as you say anytime you play with one in a game, they tend to handle poorly in comparison with the legendary X-Wings or of course A-Wings. You have me curious about Spalko's Theme now, I'll need to check it out. I'm listening to Andor's score as I type this. When I first started watching reactions to Rebels, one of my early viewings was Blind Wave (who have watched it through twice on the channel), and the first time they were reacting as Rebels was airing, and I remember seeing Eric's reaction to seeing Thrawn in this, which kind of showed what you were saying Thomas about how big a deal it was for fans to see him brought into canon here in this show. He is an iconic villain, a great change of pace and something new for our heroes to deal with. And his theme is one of Rebels best, which is saying something in this show.

Thomas Corp

The Bendu, yeah, he can be debated. Purple being a Dark Side lightsaber color is not a bad idea. Darth Revan often is shown in fan art and/or figurines with the red and purple. I think orange is often cited as the color for “Grey Jedi”. I do know that orange has been an option for a lightsaber which would please Jess as that’s her favorite color. I would want the lightsaber Dooku has with the curved hilt and red blade, though I would have to give thought as to the more precise design of the hilt. I wouldn’t say I find Pryce an admirable character. As a villain, however, she is fantastic, and I love her in that regard. Tarkin’s in my top ten characters of Star Wars. Peter Cushing was just too damn charming. Carrie Fisher even said so.

Saltire

Yeah if you are going to watch Oppenheimer, make sure its on IMAX. Been hearing a lot about how weird the aspect ratios are skewed from theatres showing it who aren't IMAX.

Thomas Corp

Yeah, my brother and I love the Y-wings, especially for their bombs and ION cannons. Like I said, my brother’s only occasional gripe was their speed, and he gave voice to that gripe every once in a while. Love the X-wings, A-wings, and especially the V-wings. Hopefully I do have the good fortune to see Oppenheimer on Imax. Oh yes, the JOY of seeing Thrawn was obscene. I squealed a bit myself. His theme is wondrous, and Lars is magnificent as Thrawn. Here’s a link to Irina’s Theme, since you say you’re interested in it: https://youtu.be/SxX2q_ehWEQ

Saltire

Oh yeah Pryce is a great antagonist, and she is one of those characters I love to hate! I dunno where I'd rank Tarkin, but yes he would be up there for sure, easily top 15 for me too, perhaps scraping into my top 10 also. Yes Peter Cushing was an absolute gentleman in the best possible sense. I'm sure you know about the slippers story; but as an aside I was flicking over tv the other day, and there is a retro channel I watch occasionally that shows old films and documentaries and little stories from yesteryear in the UK. Anyway this little 20 minute film was about how people would make toy soldiers and models back in the 50's and 60's. And Peter Cushing appeared in the film as he had a huge collection of soldiers, horses and all sorts of military vehicles and stuff. And the best part, he got them out, sat down on the floor, and this man in his 50's at the time I believe, a very famous actor over here, set about playing with them on film! Great stuff!! I told myself this was what Tarkin would do on his days off! :D

Saltire

Are V-Wings an older design? I can't remember them from older Star Wars content, only stuff we've seen more recently. Adapted from Jedi Fighters aren't they? I do kind of like them too though, along with Gerrera's U-Wing. Oh that leitmotif that Williams uses for Irina's Theme, could easily be applied to Pryce solidifying the link between the two characters! Cheers for the link!

Saltire

Ah that's nice, did not know that about the V-Wing's. I never owned any Nintendo system so never played Rogue Squadron, but thats cool that they have been around for nearly 40 years at this point making them a classic Star Wars ship. TIE Interceptor's remain my favourite though! :D

Ryan

The real life explanation is that Samuel L. Jackson specifically requested the purple lightsaber as a nod to his character in Unbreakable, plus making it easy to pick him out in the huge climactic battle in Attack of the Clones.

Ryan

My brother is a physicist and very much looking forward to Oppenheimer, and waiting until the whole family can go. Though I’ve heard some horror stories about how the physical film for the IMAX version is so huge that the projectors have to be physically altered to run it, which has caused issues like half the screen turning pink (which of course got a lot of jokes about Barbie invading the movie).

Adam

I like how you connected with Kanan's journey. I have been doing the same thing. I didn't think of his journey like that. I really like that The Bendu's voice was acted by Tom Baker. He sounds great. I really like his character. Very balanced and logical.
