Thrawn's major gimmick from the books was that he would study the full culture of his adversary to look for any advantage against them, so it was great to see that carried over here (and they made sure to put his line about it in the season's trailer so we knew it was coming). On the second episode, this is another of those times when you have to remember that at the time this was made, there was no real hope that Clone Wars would ever get a proper ending after the fifth season, so Filoni and crew took this opportunity to do the closest they thought they'd get to it. Kalani had been presumed killed in a Clone Wars episode where his ship is destroyed, but this was easily retconned as another droid of the same model, and having him here really solidifies the connection to the previous show. The fans ate it up, and the final touch of doing the Rebels bumper in the style of the Clone Wars one is the perfect way to send off the story for good.
