They are good little episodes. Nice set ups for some character that we might see in the future.

I had a feeling you would love the Mandalorian messiness in the first episode. It is great to have more focus on Fenn Rau, you said it right, don’t worry. It’s interesting revisiting this as this was the first-time seeing Gar Saxon in animation as the final season of Clone Wars hadn’t debuted yet. He debuted outside the animated shows, so this was our first time seeing him in a visual medium. Quite the memorable villain. I loved his interrogation of Ezra. Strictly speaking, Ezra wasn’t lying, at least not about Rau. Saxon grills Ezra as to where Rau is, and Ezra answers that as to where Fenn Rau is at that exact moment, he doesn’t know, not exactly. He could be on a rock formation, chilling in the Phantom II, several possibilities, thus Ezra is not lying. I like the hints of Sabine’s past, specifically her mom. I loved when it came to Sabine fighting Saxon, you yelled, “BEAT HIS ASS!!! Bringing up your mom and shit! Like, UGH!” I laughed, and said, “My thoughts exactly. Mandalorian politics aside, we leave the mothers out of this.” Of course, in Mandalorian culture, the greater insult is insulting one’s father. You see this when Boba Fett lets slide the insults Bo-Katan and Koska Reeves slung his way, but when Jango was disrespected, THAT pissed him off something fierce, and I relate. Lovely that Rau came back. True, he doesn’t have many other options, still lovely, nonetheless. You bring up a good point that they do keep things fresh with the fight scenes. The second episode was not the most warmly received when it first aired. Many fans didn’t like Iron Squadron too much. The bulk of the less than favorable opinions were centralized on Mart. In revisiting the episode, my own opinion seems to have shifted some. I remember the little shit being a LOT more annoying in this episode when first I saw it. This time the annoyance was dulled some. Admittedly, I’ve been going through a mental and emotional spell that’s, well, it’s not good, not good, so, that likely affected my mood whilst watching the episode this time round. There is still that moment when the statement is made that “Mart’s the best pilot in the galaxy.” I don’t even flinch, nor blink before I say in response, “That’s a fart in a stiff wind.” To your point, there is something to be said about though Mart made his own imbecilic choice, he doesn’t drag his friends into it, and faces the trouble alone, that is true. The bangs being over his eyes being part of his problem is a most amusing thought, yes. Lovely moments that Ezra had of being insightful, as you observed, in this episode. Thrawn, of course, is a highlight as per usual. You are correct that he tests the Imperials just as much as the Rebels. Another highlight is the expansion of Sato’s character. He is a champ. I liked how the one scene he had made you emotional. It induces a big laugh when Thrawn’s Star Destroyer, the Chimaera arrives, causing Mart to evacuate his bowels before he wisely evacuates his ship. Just a lovely reaction today, Jess, thank you.

Yeah, of the 74/75 episodes of Rebels, there is only two I consider pretty mediocre; Iron Squadron and one (unfortunately) in season 4. Thats an excellent hit-rate for a series, but Iron Squadron is the worst episode in the show imo, even though it still has its moments, especially with Chopper.

The design of the imperial Mandalorians here, is a direct hark back to Boba Fett's original armour design for Empire Strikes Back, before they changed it to what we know his armour looks like now. Indeed the title of this episode, Imperial Supercommando's, is what Boba Fett was supposed to be originally, a type of super stormtrooper who would hunt down Han Solo in Empire, before Fett and the Mandalorians got a story of their own, in of all things, the ludicrous Star Wars Holiday Special, as you have had the misfortune to have recently seen Jess! As Thomas said, Gar Saxon was the main Mandalorian antagonist in the Siege Of Mandalore who fights Bo-Katan in a cool elevator scene. She captures him eventually once Maul is caught but then everything turns to shit, and the clones instead of being liberators, become Imperial occupiers. Gar Saxon is then made Viceroy of Mandalore by the Emperor. He is voiced here (and in that arc in TCW) by Ray Stevenson, who we'll see again in the Ahsoka series playing someone else. Unfortunately he has since passed since filming that, which is rather tragic as he was a fine actor, and a fairly young man in his prime. RIP. Onto 3x8. Zeb says a ship full of Ezra's, he got that right! One is more than enough! :P The YT-2400 looks familiar, as its a heavier variant of the YT-1300, which the Millenium Falcon is. This episode is apparently a nod to a film called Red Dawn, in which a bunch of teenagers defend their home from invading forces. Think this is the first time we see Thrawn's Star Destroyer, the Chimaera, with its engraving of the many-headed monster, in which it takes its name, underneath the ship. I think the many heads signifies, that no matter what tactic you use against him, he'll have another waiting to trap you. Thrawn's name is Mitth'raw'nuruodo, with Thrawn being taken from the middle letters of his name. I really need to read his books one day. He is testing everyone under him as well as the rebels; probing for strengths and weaknesses. He is formidable. Ezra is learning from his lessons and giving out some guidance now too here and in the episode recently that covered the Clone Wars where he saw the whole picture; which all shows he's coming on as a Jedi. He has still far to go and much to learn, but he is progressing well.

A nice call-back to the original look for Boba and the original idea for Boba with the name Imperial Supercommando. Ray Stevenson is great as Saxon. Early buzz says whoever he will be playing in live action is sure to be impressive. I was sorry to hear of his untimely death as he was a fine actor. Yeah, one Ezra is more than enough, especially for Zeb. I was unaware the Iron Squadron episode was meant to be an homage to Red Dawn. You said that, I said, “Wait, that was supposed to be an homage to Red Dawn? ...Hm, doesn’t come across that way.” I believe this is the first time in a visual medium that we see the Chimaera. Those Thrawn books are wonderful. I still would like to hear how to pronounce Thrawn’s full name. Apparently, the Emperor is the only one who addresses him by his full name, though there hasn’t been a pronunciation guide to it. And yes, lovely to see Ezra’s journey continue.
