I am reminded of how you and I had different experiences with Star Trek, since you said Next Gen was on a lot in your house growing up. My dad was never a Trekkie, though he did appreciate certain aspects of it. Mom, likewise, isn’t the biggest Trekkie in the world. Not something she sought out much, though like Dad, there are aspects she most appreciates, Uhura, especially. I only ever started heavily getting into Star Trek around my early twenties. I agree with your thought that the passage of time, combined with how you’re a different person than way back when, it will be a different experience. And speaking for myself, I would most relish the opportunity to go through the journey of Next Gen with you, and share that experience with you, Jess. Now onto the pilot. You know, prior to the other day, I don’t think I had ever seen the inaugural episode of Next Gen as one continuous episode. I had only seen both parts back-to-back in syndication/reruns. Just from your reaction to the opening, I can tell that this is going to be really special to share this show with you. You had a certain gleam in your eyes that was most wonderful to see. Captain Jean-Luc Picard is my favorite Star Trek Captain, and my favorite of the main crew of the series. A lot of that is due to his being played by our dear beloved Patrick Stewart who is marvelous, also, Picard is immensely relatable to me, and not just the unashamed baldness. I knew you’d relate to when Picard said he doesn’t deal well with kids. You said he spoke to your own heart on that, he did the same thing with me. So, if you were curious, Picard’s my favorite of the main crew. A very close second in terms of favorites of the main crew is Gates McFadden as dear Beverly. I say favorites of the main crew because my favorite character introduced in Next Gen, and tied with Spock for being my favorite Star Trek character behind only Khan, is the marvelously mercurial and menacing Q, who makes a strong debut right out the gate. I LOVE John de Lancie as Q. I like the fact that you didn’t remember Q appearing as soon as he did, and that you’re most interested in exploring Q’s character. He doth sport a grand and glorious outfit. During the trial, I loved your reaction to the scene with Denise Crosby killing it with the speech Tasha had, I felt that part too. Watching it again, made me say, “Man, Tasha gets slept on. It feels like hardly anybody gives her the proper appreciation. I don’t even give her the proper appreciation, and I should.” It’s interesting with O’Brien. You asked why he wasn’t taken. Presumably, the reason is that it was not deliberately meant to be O’Brien in this episode. It is him in retrospect, but, when they filmed, Colm Meaney was just playing a random crew member, who would then evolve into being O’Brien. A solid introduction to Riker, especially with him sensing something’s afoot, especially when the shiny-ass apples, as you put it, popped up out of nowhere. I believe Picard agrees with you and was testing Riker on the belief that he and you hold. I had a feeling you would have a strong reaction to that scene. I still can’t get over how Jonathan Frakes looks like a college kid without that great beard of his. When rewatching the pilot, I was attempting to deduce your favorite of the main crew. Like Rebels, I thought a case could be made for any of them being your favorite, all seemed plausible. I did think there was a high likelihood that Geordi would be at the very least one of your favorites of the main crew, if not your favorite. Seeing you smile that wonderful smile and the way your eyes lit up upon seeing Geordi told me I was correct in thinking that, and even before you clarified, I knew that Geordi is your favorite of the main crew of Next Gen. LeVar Burton is most excellent in the role. And now I look forward to your reactions to the Geordi episodes, one in particular. I would not doubt that Geordi will reign supreme for you in terms of the main crew of the show. Which brings us to DeForest’s final appearance as Bones. Well, it’s not literally his final appearance, this predates Star Treks V and VI. This is, however, I believe, the final chronological appearance of Bones, though I may be mistaken on that. And seeing as DeForest was the first actor of the main crew of the original series that we sadly lost, it is most fitting that he was the one to pass the torch. I KNEW you would have a most marvelous reaction to Bones. I was right. It got me too, revisiting it, I sobbed some. And it is a most lovely place to pause the episode, and end the first part of your reaction to the pilot episode of Next Gen. A reaction that thus far has been exceptionally lovely, Jess, thank you so much. I am most looking forward to the remainder of the reaction.

I remember I was in college when Next Gen first came out. I've rewatched certain episodes over the years, but had never sat down to do a full rewatch, looking forward to doing that with you!

Nice. Recently managed to get ahold of this series again as I thought Jess was about to start. Look forward to the journey warts and all especially the rough first few seasons before it settles down into the best Star Trek series. Will watch the reactions later tonight.

This episode, and most of the season, has some very serious writing issues and is pretty darn lucky they got Patrick Stewart, whose ability to deliver any material with utter conviction no matter how silly it is carries the show single-handedly at times. But I still can’t help having a ton of nostalgic affection for it as the first Trek I ever knew, at just three years old watching with my parents.

Cruel Angel

My first Trek was TOS reruns in the 70s, aired them every day after school. Then we got the films.. but never thought I would get to see a new Trek series. TNG premiered when I was a junior in high school, and there was so much build up for it. My favorite ad was them showing brief clips interspersed with "In two days... the 24th century begins". My favorite is Riker, but boy did I hate how he was in this episode with making Geordi do an official report. Glad they loosened him up and kept Picard as the stick in the mud :P

Let's see what's out there . . . Engage!

Interestingly enough, before I found that Jess was doing this, I found a nice little get-together of the ST:TNG crew in an interview by Mariette Hartley on their new roles back in 1987. Good fun. Possibly a short reaction?

Leonard McCoy: "What now? Saucer separation at warp speed? Dammit! I'm a doctor! Not a squashed bug on a deck plate!! What greenhorn is piloting this ship? - shakily gets to his feet helped by two medical orderlies - Ah'm alright, Ah'm alright! Don't point that tricorder at me! There are no bones broken, only ma dignity! - turns a mean look at the orderly - Whatever happened to sense - throws off the helping hand - and the sanctity of life?!"

I just finished a watch through of TNG last month. It's such a good show too watch and re-watch, especially after years and you have changed. I love Roddenberry vision. So much to think about.

Dave Hampton

Jess, can I ask what version of this you are watching? I tried to synch this with the version I bought from Apple, but they are very different and hard to synch. Your version is better in that there I scenes I remember but my version does not have them. Mine is two parts so it may just be the premiere that is like this. I also own the series on blu-ray (I know I have a problem that I own two version of this show) so if that is what you are watching I will try that (though harder for me to synch on same screen...). I really enjoyed your reaction. You can see the joy in your face for some of the characters (Geordi was obvious as you said). I think Data is your second favorite, but we will see. : )

Haha this was fun. Its been a fair while since I watched this too, though I have caught several episodes again over the years multiple times. The pilot here is a bit rough and ready, with many of the actors not getting a hang of their parts yet, notably Brent Spiner as Data. Then we have the glorious overacting of Martina Sirtis and Denise Crosby putting eggs on top of every line they deliver. Then we have baby face Jonathon Frakes bringing the testosterone to the party in his own inimitable way. Frakes has always been great as Riker, even when the material sometimes is lacking. I haven't seen Picard season 3 yet (I'm avoiding season 1 and 2) but the bits I have seen show Frakes has still got it in the role even if he is wizened these days. Stewart bringing the gravitas right from the off for Picard, showing authority but also a willingness to listen to his crew and not be a despot. I've seen Stewart in many things over the years, but Picard may just be his best role. However the star of the show has to be - aside from the guy with the little gong which he was ringing as much as he could! - the great John De Lancie as our loveable mischevious Q. He steals the scene in every one he is in and is a joy. That man can act. Think this will be a good ride watching this alongside Jess and everyone. Looking forward to it, especially when we get to the really good stuff.

Hey Jess. I do remember the plot of this and a few scenes, but that’s about it. I forgot all about McCoy. So my reaction was very similar to yours. I kept noticing Data’s orange lipstick,I don’t know why. This was fun. I really enjoyed your reaction, thanks!

Josef Schiltz

I wonder if Jess has ever heard 'Alien Voices' with Leonard Nimoy and John de Lancie?

Josef Schiltz

BTW: Jess! Your face was a picture when DeForest turned up at the end!

David Vandervliet

The point where you stopped - Data, and McCoy - is where the episode ends, when the 2 hr pilot is split into 2 episodes.

Alvin Cura

Is it weird that I eagerly look forward to when you get to Lower Decks and Strange New Worlds? ;)

Jenny Chalek

I can't wait until you eventually get to Picard.
