Haha Sam Witwer is so good as Maul, he has that threatening, creepy vibe down to a tee. Got to feel for the Rebel staffer getting attacked from Ezra and being almost sliced in half, because he thinks he was Darth Maul! Poor fella will be having nightmares for years about that! Bendu being a bit more tetchy with Kanan and Ezra because he likes his peace and quiet, and our heroes are anything but that! Unlike on Malachor though, Kanan lets Ezra take the lead and trusts him more now, even if he has has also placed a tracker on him in case he gets into trouble. On the Satine portrait all cut up. It is kind of psychotic, but it does represent a victory over Obi-Wan for him. Also the Mandalorian writing Maul has scrolled on the wall says one word : KENOBI!!! Its been 18 years or so since their last meeting and all both have went through, and yes Maul is being hypocritical telling Ezra to let go of the past when he cannot do so, as he knows no other way, but it could also be him trying to sweeten their relationship and try to pass himself off a bit as Kanan to entice Ezra to become his apprentice. It doesn't work though. He does want him as apprentice, and its almost pitiful how much he wants to 'adopt' Ezra. And now that Ezra has shown he wants nothing to do with him, he just accepts it as his lot in life. In days gone by, Maul would kill Ezra, but now disappointment takes over his rage. In the earlier episode where Maul and Ezra merge the holocrons, before they look inside the holocrons, Maul tells Ezra he is looking for hope. The episode where Ezra lost his parents, in that vision at the end, his mother tells him 'without hope, we have nothing'. Indeed, what does Maul have at this point? He has lost his brother, his master abandoned him, he no longer has any power and has lost his crime syndicate; he has been wandering aimlessly this past decade trying to find his place in the galactic story. When that has failed, whats the one thing he still clings on to? Obi-Wan and vengeance. For all his ingenuity, he never learns to move past all that. "It ends where it began", yep Maul is remembering that it was Tatooine that he first bumped into Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan, so it makes sense for him that there is still a link with Obi-Wan and that planet. Sabine is right though about twin suns not narrowing it down as our friends don't know that its Tatooine, and in our own galaxy, its estimated that binary star systems are more prevalent than any other, perhaps into the hundred billions of systems - so that would be quite a search and the SW galaxy is bigger than ours! So the key to destroying the Sith is Obi-Wan Kenobi? Interesting. ;) Sabine picking up the Darksabre at the end (which was Maul's but he doesn't use it after his fight with Sidious), the story of that continues... 3x12 : This is the only two-parter remanining that will be split Jess, all the rest you'll be able to do in one sitting. The construction modules around the planet have been cleared. The Empire wants all traces they were there wiped away. Andor was set 5 years out from Rogue One and A New Hope, but the series takes place over the course of a year; this is now a few years on from that here in Rebels, so this is after the last time you 'saw' Saw. :D The design on the rebel helmets of Saw's crew, is a nod to Return Of The Jedi and the helmets they wore there on Endor. We are approaching that time now, so that makes sense. Actually if you look at some of the designs of the hair and facial hair on the background characters in Rebels, it is clearly trying to emulate the very 70's look of A New Hope, which again is a nice little link up for cohesion. Great that they got Forest Whitaker back to play Saw. Thats one thing Rebels does well over Clone Wars, try to get the movie actors in most of the time. He does give Saw a very creepy and cold laugh though, indicating that he is slightly unhinged, which we know he gets by Rogue One. Sabine moaning about the sand, well we know that its the worst foe in the Star Wars universe, according to Anakin "it gets everywhere...". ;) Talk about harsh critics! Kanan shows some serious force power in this episode, force-pushing Ezra across that gap, balancing a bridge to allow Saw and Rex across, then does one of his insane force jumps - and STILL Rex says he's no Anakin! Sheesh! To me this line also says something else; that Ezra hasn't told Rex that Anakin is now Vader (and probably because he thinks both Anakin/Vader and Ahsoka are dead), as Rex clearly still idolises him.

Sorry to hear it was a bad morning for you. If I have dates when you filmed this right, I don’t think I had a pleasant morning that day either, if it helps. Maybe, last month was a troublesome blur, so it’s hard to say. It is therefore nice to hear you say that despite the difficult morning, you know watching Rebels will go some way in making up for it. Quite rotten a situation of Darth Maul fucking with Ezra with his “I am here. Now I am here.” routine. It is great as you observe Kanan’s trust in Ezra. Likewise, it is demonstrated that Ezra’s seeking more closure, rather than acting out of any trust for Maul. Lovely to return to Dathomir and dip your toes back into that old black magic. Sad to hear Maul say he is the last of his kind. That scene with the portrait of Satine, accompanied by her leitmotif mournfully played on piano, that made me sob. Revisiting it for your reaction ten years after first seeing Satine’s death in Clone Wars and nearly seven years since this episode of Rebels aired the pain from that has lost none of its potency. You mention unpacking that. I don’t think that would be a good idea, nor do I wish to think about it much. To Maul’s defense on the flesh and blood payment, he never said it wasn’t a condition, nor did Ezra ask. It’s the thing with the Sith, you ask direct questions, and you keep asking direct questions until you have all the answers. And you will receive the truth, because the Sith never lie. Though of course, they do on occasion bullshit. As someone who has Darth Maul in my top five Star Wars characters and top ten favorite characters of anything, yes, it is REMARKABLY RICH hearing him of all people advocating forgetting the past. Your reaction to that was great, by the way. Sam Witwer who is also a hardcore Maul fan even notes it saying that Maul’s obsession with Ezra is a way to fill the void left by Savage’s death, not to mention Maul didn’t take his mom’s death all that well. And now he’s off to finish what he started. I also laugh when Ezra says the Darksaber doesn’t belong to Sabine, I say, “There, See? Ezra gets it. He’s right. It should be in the possession of Emperor Palpatine, it belongs to him as he is the rightful claimant.” The Geonosis two-parter is great. I did figure your reaction to it wouldn’t all be in the same video, still I did rewatch both parts the other day just to be safe. “Better to have and not need than need and not have.” as my grandmother used to say. Yes, a big highlight seeing Saw Gerrera again, especially for how we have Forest Whitaker, an incredible actor that he is, returning to the role following Rogue One. I love how the exploration of Saw’s character was something you are interested in. The reunion of Saw and Rex was lovely. I also loved your reaction to Rex talking about Steela. A major highlight of the reaction was Kanan being impressive. What was particularly great was how you were being the most wonderful hypewoman for Kanan, and then Rex chimed in by talking shit, by saying, “Eh, he’s no Skywalker.” Thank you for the terrific reaction, Jess. I look forward to next week for your reaction to the conclusion of the arc, and your reaction to a particularly wonderful episode.

Sam is brilliant as Darth Maul, yes. Good analysis on the portrait of Satine and Maul’s hypocrisy. Yes, Maul is left with nothing at this point. From the looks of it, he lost his criminal empire to the Dragon Queen. His last real chance to gain the power necessary to defeat the Emperor and Darth Vader failed, thus, Obi’s death is about the only thing left that he’s got going for him, and he knows it. Great to see Forest as Saw again. There are still one or two gaps with his character, though I assume that the second and final season of Andor will fill some of that in. Anakin was always right about the sand. To be fair, though one can say what they will about Anakin, in terms of objective Force abilities and ludicrously amazing feats, he is one of the very best, and Rex did have a front row seat to a lot of it. Hell, when they tried to rescue Tup, how though Rex noted Anakin’s plan seemed extreme even by Anakin’s standards, he still held no doubt that Anakin could pull it off. Naturally, this would lead to Rex feeling that Kanan would fall under Anakin’s shadow, mighty impressive though Kanan is. Also, Kanan snips back with the “I heard that!” indicating that tis all in good fun. I do wonder if Ezra put two and two together about Anakin and Vader. By that I mean I wonder how much sense he made from Vader and Ahsoka’s exchange of dialogue/how much he heard, considering how undoubtedly scared out of his mind he was. Of course, if he did deduce the truth, like you say, he probably didn’t tell Rex to spare him that pain and heartbreak. I don’t blame him.

Yeah its always good to return to Dathomir. Its like one of these special places in the SW universe, like Kashyyyk, Tython or Korriban, that has a lot of mystery to it. In canon now (though I am not fully upto speed on it), there is at least still one Nightsister around, but that became true after Rebels here was aired. I'm hoping for another as well, that hopefully gets told on screen, and not in books, to the fate of their story. I noticed the both melancholic and warped version of Satine's leitmotif too, the Kiner's are the best!! True the Darksabre, if the ideology of it at this time is true, does belong to Darth Sidious, though a trinket like that to him is meaningless when he controls the entire feckin' galaxy! I still haven't finished Son Of Dathomir, so dunno if Maul did use it there, but perhaps the blade reminds him more of his failures, which is why he sticks with his trusty red double-blade and abandons the Darksabre. I'm not sure if Jess spotted it at the end though that Sabine picked it up, so the story of that will continue in this series now.
