Saltire le Hutt

One thing Rebels does so well is in its season finales, all of them deliver. Onto the first episode. Remember back when we were only concerned with getting some fruit!?! Thrawn has been waiting for this moment. The codes AP-5 and Chopper stole a few episodes ago, have alerted him to the fact that the rebels were planning to attack the Lothal shipyard to take out his TIE Defenders, and he times it correctly when General Dodonna's fleet head off, so Thrawn assumes he is meeting up with Sato and Hera's cell; and he uses Kallus's call to triangulate the planet they'll head to - Atollon. You don't want him to succeed, but like Vader, he is also too cool not to enjoy watching. On General Dodonna, he is in the original trilogy and I believe Rogue One too, and is played by an actor who was in A New Hope as well, which is a great tie-in. We see here how much Ezra has learnt from Kanan and Hera throughout the series. Ezra is special, and the Spectres - well aside from Chopper!! - have helped him become a selfless person, great rebel and on the long path to Jedi Knighthood. There is something endearing the way he says "may the force be with me!" :D There is something about the sound of all the Star Destroyers flying in simultaneously thats terrifying. We rarely see them at their worst in battles, but they are indeed something to be feared in the right hands. Always smile at the pilot played by Dave Filoni, who is Green Leader here, with his 70's tache, its a beauty! :D Hera going toe-to-toe with Thrawn as a military leader here. She can't win, but getting out without being completely decimated, will feel like a victory. I don't know what the heck Konstantin (who has been with us for some while throughout the series) was thinking, breaking ranks and undermining Thrawn. Even if his attack succeeds and they all get out with victory, he'll be executed for insubordination by going against his superior officer's orders. Sato takes him out as he sacrifices himself and his pilots (who are god-damn heroes for staying!), just to get Ezra out. RIP Phoenix Cell Leader. Love the scenes with Kanan trying to rile Bendu into fighting. As he always says, he is the one in the middle, but apathy and acting in self-interest - no matter how ancient and wise he is - is almost as bad in this situation, as what the Empire is doing to his planet. We've seen Kanan be a lot more Jedi-like this season as he has rediscovered his balance and has something to fight for; but here he is acting more like his old self, Kanan Jarrus the rebel, to try to get Bendu involved. Some great space action shots of the battle, and every ship the rebels lose here is utterly devastating. The sound design throughout and particle effects of the explosions are horrifically satisfying. This Battle Of Atollon for me is even more devastating than Hoth in Empire Strikes Back. There is only one hope here for our heroes, Sabine.

3x22 : Eugh, right from the off we see why Star Destroyers would be terrifying to a local populus, when they can orbital bombard like that. Sabine's shield held, but it wouldn't have lasted much longer had Thrawn not stopped the attack, since he was under orders from Tarkin to capture the rebel leadership. Great to see Sabine having Ezra's back after his pleas for the Mandalorians to get involved. She has always seemed quite distant with Ezra in their earlier days, but its warming to know that after everything they have went through now, she trusts that Ezra can make 'the impossible possible' if given the resources. I like the line from Hera that if she is going to be killed here, she is going to 'go out' on her beloved Ghost. She loves that ship as much as Han loves the Falcon. :D Bendu transforms into a Force Storm, one that fires indiscriminately at everyone. It provides cover for the remnants of Phoenix Cell to escape, something Thrawn couldn't have anticipated, but Bendu only wants rid of everyone to restore quiet to his world, and if that means also taking down rebel ships escaping, so be it - he is the one in the middle after all. Just as well the Ghost has strong shields, else he'd have killed everyone on the ship. Bendu gives a warning to Thrawn that he sees his defeat; the force does frustrate Thrawn as he doesn't quite understand it since he isn't force-sensitive, and its an annoyance to him especially when his plans get undone because of it. Bendu seems tied to Atollon in some way, and it appears he just transformed again into another form that will stay there and guard that planet for aeons to come. I love the music as the rebels flee, its heroic but isn't triumphant. They only got out by the skin of their teeth. I love what Kanan says to Kallus at the end : "thank you, for risking everything...", its a line that hits hard because he has been a long-term antagonist, but after his experience with Zeb on the ice moon, he did then risk it all to ensure the rebels are one step ahead as best they can be in this sector. If not for him this season, all might have been lost. So our rebels lose Chopper Base at Atollon, Sato, countless ships and pilots, and Pheonix Cell is all but destroyed; but they live to fight another day, and that counts as a win for those that survive. Kanan is right, they have got to want freedom, but he sees it coming for them if they keep fighting. Next stop Yavin!

You started by saying your anxiety was high going into this finale. One’s anxiety doth kick up a notch when Thrawn is in the mix, yes. It’s great that we open with Thrawn informing Tarkin of his progress and it allows Kallus to fall into the trap. To be fair to Kallus, he likely panicked and failed to consider what Thrawn’s plan was. You know, the old adage: “Imperials don’t take a dump without a plan.” A man of Grand Admiral Thrawn’s rank and intellegence isn’t going to give Grand Moff Tarkin an update like that without having thought the matter through. Your concern for Kallus and fear that he would die, Jess, that was shared by me when I first saw this six years ago. I too was relieved that he lived, albeit I loved your reaction to his survival better. And yes, no excusing his past actions; we’re not justifying that. It’s Tala’s line, “Somethings you can’t forget. But you can fight to make them better.” I LIVED for Thrawn demonstrating his brilliance. I’d be his hypeman, paraphrasing Negan by getting on the loudspeaker, yelling, “Knock, knock! Who’s there? Butter. Butter who? Well, Shady Bunch, you butter break out your umbrellas because Grand Admiral Thrawn is about to make it goddamn rain!” A most beautiful moment during Thrawn’s orbital bombardment when Kevin Kiner goes full force with Thrawn’s malevolent theme spreading its web around the scene, especially when the primary dies iræ, dies illa motif overwhelms. And when Thrawn is bombarding Chopper Base, it is most certainly the day of wrath and doom impending for the rebels, “Solvet sæclum in favilla. Teste David cum Sibylla. Quantus tremor est futurus. Quando Iudex est venturus. Cuncta stricte discussurus!” as they say. I had suspected Sato’s death would get to you. I remembered what you said about your eyelash in the Supernatural reaction. I caught that when it happened, and said, “Oh, that’s the moment Jess was talking about.” Sato died well. I love how you see his body language when he makes his decision, and Keone Young expertly conveys in his voice the emotion Sato goes through in making his decision to lay down his life, and a bonus being he takes Konstantine with him. Lovely Sabine and her clan come through, your reactions to that being delightful. Terrifying when Kanan incurs the wrath of the Bendu and the Bendu goes Old Testament, leading me to note, “Jesus, Tom!” Credit where credit is due, Thrawn, taken aback though he is, shot the Bendu down. Though the Bendu gets the last laugh by imparting to Thrawn about his defeat being like the cold embrace of many arms. And Thrawn does seem a trifle unnerved, though I like to imagine part of that is though such a defeat does sound artistically done, there is question of would it be at such an artistic level to Thrawn’s satisfaction, and that gives him pause. Other highlights: The moment Rex and Zeb have is indeed sweet. I knew you were going to comment on AP-5 and his slow run, though as you note, he moves faster than 3PO. I’m watching AP-5, yelling, “Hurry it up there, Marv! You’re going to become a permanent resident if you don’t!” And when Kanan’s making it back to the base whilst the Empire starts shooting, I went, “Serpentine, Kanan! Ser-Holy... He’s actually serpentining! Kanan is adhering to the Peter Falk wisdom! What a guy!” Now the Rebels are off to Yavin 4 where we know they’ll be safe. At least, for a while. A beautiful reaction, Jess, thank you so much.

Each of the finales do deliver. Thrawn is too damned impressive to hate. A thrill for those of us familiar with the old canon seeing him in action like this. Throughout the episode, I want to yell, “Grand Admiral Thrawn, you magnificent bastard, I read your BOOK!!” Yes, lovely to see Ezra’s growth. A lovely thing to see the Star Destroyers be destructive beauties. Hera v Thrawn, as you say, she can’t win, but she’s not going down without a fight. With Konstantine, maybe he’s just an idiot. Sato and those pilots taking him down, does form the lump in the throat. Kanan does good to rouse the Bendu from his apathy. As a wise old woman said, “Apathy is death, worse than death, because at least a rotting corpse feeds the beasts and insects.” The space battles of this episode, when my brother gets to this show in full, he’ll love. He’s a sucker for the space battles, and this is one of the best.

That opening bombardment was terrifying and wonderful to behold. Most heartwarming how Sabine comes through. Yes, Hera would prefer to go down with the Ghost after all she’s gone through with the old girl. I love how Thrawn manages to keep his cool enough when the Bendu attacks, especially since that’s not something he could have anticipated, though yes, hearing about his defeat does rattle him some. It does appear the Bendu is somehow tied to the planet. The well-earned respect that Freddie Prinze Jr injects into Kanan’s line to Kallus is great. Yes, as you and Jess observe, though it is arguably a defeat, the rebels live to fight another day, or as Thrawn would describe, they live to die another day. Great season finale.

The more times I watch this episode the more times it solidifies in my mind that Bendu is a manifestation of rare, unpredictable, neutral nature. Nature is a part of The Force. It has no side. It always remains, peaceful, quiet, everlasting. It is unchanged, uncaring about the suffering of others, "like a stone in the river". It remains after war has tarnished the landscape. It is invisible but always present. When one turns to it for advice one learns to just to BE MORE PRESENT, like it always is, and it can create a storm which will reek havoc upon all, without sympathy, when the right conditions are met.
