Ryan

Yes, that's right, if you're not a vegan, you're just as bad as a slave owner! That whole speech is maybe the worst case of all of the condescending, sanctimonious writing that these early TNG seasons often get accused of, and it's a shame it's here because this is otherwise a pretty solid episode, with a neat meta twist that the warring races have absolutely nothing to do with the central problem. Though it does also have a just plain bizarre "Oh, that wacky spaceship!" tone to what should be an extremely serious development in its final moments.

Will need to start binge watching this to catch up on Jess's reactions. Been rewatching too much Star Wars - again!

First off, sorry to hear, Jess, you’ve had a rough week of minor inconveniences during filming. As you say, nothing major, yet I relate to how the little things build up to a significant annoyance, thereby exacerbating your anxiety. In this case, the power flickering, which I suspect the floofy cloud, to use the technical term, is responsible for the problem in this incongruity in power. Like you said, though not a standout episode, it was not bad, it was decent enough. I share your thoughts of wishing for more focus on the squabbling political plotline. As it is, it’s kind of just there. As I see Ryan notes, the main thing that came from the plotline was the soapbox moment of the writer’s having an anti-carnivore shpiel. That’s not to impugn anyone who has chosen a vegan lifestyle, rather it is frustrating how as Ryan described how sanctimonious and condescending it is when said shpiel is written in such a way that it deals in absolutes that would make a Sith blush. The ending scene with the show basically saying, “Oh-ho, those Anticans and Selay!” is jarring as hell. I did get a kick over your description of the one prop looking like a Spirit Halloween party favor. The overall narrative of whatever entity from the floofy cloud possessing the crew and ultimately Picard, though not bad, yes, was a touch light, depth-wise. It kind of felt like an unused episode script from the original series, though I doubt Shatner would have been happy with it, then again, we did get the Tholian Web episode. Essentially, it feels like an episode that has two intriguing enough plotlines, and yet, neither gets properly explored. A highlight is Data going full Sherlock Holmes. I do have a nerd moment in that, I observe that if Data had studied all of Conan Doyle’s Holmes stories, he would know that the Calabash gourd with meerschaum bowl was not in any of them. I even like to think Picard’s annoyed by the inaccuracy. Of course, pop-culture has made that particular pipe synonymous with Holmes, hence the inclusion. It also makes me think that I should reread those stories and/or rewatch the Granda Sherlock Holmes series. God, do I love Jeremy Brett as Holmes. A solid reaction, even with it being split in two. I thank you for how fun it was. As to your burnout, I am sorry you’re going through the rough patch. In respose to how you say we can yell at you for not taking a break earlier in the year, I would have advised you earlier in the year to take a break come spring, but that was the time of your surgery, and the timing didn’t work out as you yourself stated, hence my not saying anything months back. I do hope your upcoming break proves most beneficial for you, Jess. Thank you again for the fun reaction.

Oh Jess. I well understand the anxiety, being a lifelong sufferer myself. I hope the break lifts that away. Annoyances mount up and there is a phrase in a poem 'The Lost Body' by Aimé Césaire which sums up the effect of the mounting up of tensions nicely! "I who Krakatoa" I've Krakatoaed quite a few times when things mount up.

This episode is my least favorite so far. The one thing I loved about it was the thing others seemed to have not liked. I loved the speech saying "we no longer enslave animals for food purposes...". There is nothing wrong with eating meat. There is something wrong with the factory farm way we produce most of it. With cellular agriculture now approved by the FDA and USDA I am looking forward to companies like Upside foods and Believer Meats making meat a new way. Even old meat companies are into cellular agriculture since they see the current way we make meat as unsustainable, so they are investing in the cellular agriculture companies. I have always thought companies like Upside foods should use that quote from Riker in their commercials when the get to that point. Still a way to go before a lot of meat is made this way but Believer meats is making a facility near me that will make 22 million pounds annually. It is start.

I don't know how often you have run into issues like the power flickering but I had that from time to time and for stuff like my computer and internet i decided to get a battery backup (UPS) so in the very least i could have time to save what i'm doing and shut down if power might not be coming back. Might be worth the $150-200 investment to save on future headache/stress? Basically its plug a power strip with a battery in it so the power cuts out it kicks over the battery for the designated plugs that run off the battery then a few outlets that are just extras with surge protection. So other than hearing the thing click on when it goes to battery power or beeping if its without power for an extended period its pretty seamless.

I thought this may be Ophidiophobia territory for Jess. Maybe the anthropoid form of the Selay weren't snakey enough thank goodness. Very worrying to see Jess panic-stricken like that. That's some phobia.
