"I say, what a wonderful butler, he's so violent!" that's my favourite 4th Doctor scene😄. This story is iconic, and easily Douglas Adams best writing for the show. Julian Glover is back too! You might remember him as Richard the Lionheart from way back in The Crusade. He's been in a ton, General Veers in Empire Strikes Back, the Bond villain Aristotle Kristatos in For Your Eyes Only, Walter Donovan in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Grand Maester Pycelle in Game of Thrones, just to name a few.

Everyone say hi to Catherine Schell - here playing the Countess - Hungarian born actress Katherina Freiin Schell von Bauschlottwho has a little bit of a history in the SF genre. For instance, her film debut was in Lana: Queen Of The Amazons in 1964. She was a Bond girl in On Her Majesties Secret Service. In the 1969 film Moon Zero Two, she played Clementine Taplin. looking for her brother, a miner/prospector, Brief exposition: In May 2021, the Moon is in the process of being colonized, and this new frontier is attracting a diverse human population to lunar settlements like Moon City. In the U.S., the film was billed as a space Western. A few years later, she was a regular in Space 1999's second season playing the shape-changing Psychon, Maya. She has also appeared in films twice with Peter Sellers. The Return Of The Pink Panther and The Prisoner Of Zenda - the same year as this Doctor Who appearance.

Thank you for a wonderful reaction. Like you I give the episode 2 cliffhanger a 4. Quite ironic it centres around the Doctor & Romana being on holiday just prior to your own one! Now if you were going to Paris, that would be weird! I absolutely adore this story, it's in my top 10. I remember it vividly as a child - the cliffhanger to the first part where he pulls his face off scared the hell out of me - kind of laughable now in the best possible way. It was the very first time the production team filmed a story abroad & it is also the story with the highest ever viewing figures - one episode garnered a collossal 16.1 million views. I say 'they' filmed it abroad but as it turns out, only a handful of them went to Paris for the outdoor scenes. The studio based scenes were all filmed in the UK - much to the annoyance of those who had to stay behind! It is such an intriguing story from the get go with some great Characters & Tom Baker on top form. So glad you are enjoying it & I hope you have a wonderful break! See you next time!

I thought I recognised her from somewhere! it was Space 1999. Thanks for mentioning that, I can at last stop scratching my head over that one!

Forgot for an instant, David Graham - here playing Professor Kerensky - is a veteran of Doctor Who, having voiced both Daleks and Mechanoids. He was also the vocal talent behind some of the Thunderbirds characters Gordon Tracy, Brains, Parker and Kyrano as well as a number of characters in previous Gerry Anderson productions from Four Feather Falls, Supercar to Fireball XL5. One of his later roles was as Grandpa Pig in the series Peppa Pig.

Best wishes for your holiday, Jess. I hope you have a lovely time. SYS! Thing is though, have you shipped Lalla and Tom yet? Maybe there's a reason to the effervescent happiness. A chemistry?

And, of course, her father, Mentor, in her first episode, The Metamorph, was played by none other than Brian Blessed.

James Fish

Ah ok - will definitely have to revisit that series one day. I haven't seen it since it originally aired.

James Fish

I've seen videos where people talk about a summary of it, but yes, no straight up reactions. A pity as I used to hugely enjoy that series as a kid. Used to show on a Saturday on ITV before World of Sport in the UK if my memory serves me correctly.

It seems that Space 1999 was one of those programmes that was not broadcast across the country at a standard time. Looking into it, the time slot that you mention seems to be the LWT region time slot for series two. All others look to be early evening slots near 6 to 7 pm, which is the slot I recall having been on Anglia TV Region from Norwich. As opposed to Doctor Who's time slot, which can be readily looked up on the BBC Genome Radio Times pages, I entered "Space 1999 first broadcast showing ITV" in the Google search engine. A brief Wiki description for Space 1999 headed the first page with a clickable 'Broadcast History' beneath.

Dosen't he turn up as a character in the 1st series too? He instantly decay's to death or something right?

Josef Schiltz

Yup. He played Dr Cabot Rowland in an episode called Death's Other Dominion. The Alphans come across some humans marooned on an ice planet that have become immortal. The Alphans offer them passage on Moonbase Alpha. However when the Eagle transporters leave the planet's influence the immortals instantly revert to real time and the deaths and decay happen instantaneously. Cabot Rowland is holding Helena Russell's hand at the time and she is left gripping the hand of a decayed corpse.

James Fish

Yes, correct on both counts. Yes it was LWT (even though we could get Anglia because we lived in East Anglia, for some reason LWT was a better reception) and Yes, it was season 2 as it featured Maya and I don't think the first season did.

Josef Schiltz

Yes, well that would have been dependent on your transmitter. We're on Tacolneston. Maybe you were on Sandy Heath? Our aerial points to the North-East. Season Two, Barry Morse was out, So, I think, was Prentis Hancock - who has been in a few Doctor Who serials including Jon Pertwee's first. Tony Anholt was in and Catherine Schell. Tony's character used brew ale. Maya tried it and did one of her transformations into a hideous creature. I really like Professor Bergman. I was sorry Barry Morse left.
