To me, I'm more likely to side with Mon Mothma's approach - what good is rebelling against evil if you yourself become evil?

Thomas Corp

As Obi-Wan pointed out to Anakin, “You have allowed this Dark Lord to twist your mind until now, until now you have become the very thing you swore to destroy.” It is of course easier said than done, but it is why we fight so hard not to lose ourselves to evil; to not succumb to the darkness.

Yes, this two-parter is a standout. As you note, it’s always a thrill to dive deep into the question where is the line which you do not cross, and as you posit, what rules/morals do you hold onto, every time they do so, it’s great. In this two-parter particularly, it’s great to explore the difference between Mon Mothma and her approach of seeing the bigger picture versus Saw’s approach of just fucking shit up. I loved their confrontation, Genevieve and Forest were great in that, especially how Genevieve conveys Mon Mothma’s genuine anger towards Saw, highlighting how his actions are frowned upon with the higher ups of the Rebel Alliance. Of course, part of the anger is, in part, because the alliance is probably still sore at Saw for how they were cultivating a high-ranking Imperial defection, that Saw is responsible for it proverbially and literally going up in flames. Then again, by doing so, Saw may, keyword, MAY have done the alliance a MASSIVE favor, vis-à-vis Princess Leia’s parentage being kept under wraps. We’ll never know of course, which makes it difficult to properly assess the situation. I love how Ezra and Sabine get wrapped up in Saw’s latest quest to uncover the small moon sized secret the Empire is hiding; thus, Ezra gets another crash course in the bigger picture versus the immediate concern. And it shows how Ezra, though he does understand the need for a concern for the bigger picture, just wants to help people, like the prisoners on the Star Destroyer. And you feel for all these innocent contractors hired to do the Death Star job quickly and quietly; roped into a war they had nothing to do with. Though I suspect some of them went along willingly. I mean think about it, you’re a roofer, and some juicy government contract comes your way; you got a wife and kids and a two-story in suburbia. This is a government contract, which means all sorts of benefits. You have no personal politics. You’re just trying to scrape out a living, so you say yes. Of course, once you learn the full scope, you’re horrified and want to back out, thus you don’t mind so much when these left-wing militants like Saw and his partisans swoop in and save you then proceed to blast the Imperials with lasers and wipe out everyone within a three-mile radius. I loved how you lived for the one sassy guy’s commentary, especially his noting, “We ARE still prisoners.” Your laugh at that and his other moments of commentary was great. It’s good to see the group join the fight at the end. This two-parter builds beautifully to Saw’s monologue. Forest breaks my heart a little where he expresses Saw’s belief that he can never return home. It’s subtle, but it feels like Saw envies Ezra for being able to hold onto his idealism, though I doubt Saw would outright say it. I love your thoughts on this two-parter, especially how you’ve expressed many things similar to things I’ve said over the years. Particularly how it pertains to Saw and how I love the show never outright demonizes him. As I’ve often said, you, Jess, said something similar, “The show doesn’t expect you to condone Saw’s actions, but you can understand where he’s coming from.” Tellingly, Ezra hesitated to reply to Saw’s one query about Lothal, and at the end of the episode, when Ezra asks the one question, no answer is provided. You’re right on the themes in this episode being similar to Andor. I’ve said Rebels and Andor are companion pieces with Rebels being slightly more family friendly, and Andor being geared towards a more adult audience, especially with its John le Carré feel. Watching this reaction makes me suggest to you that it would be a good idea, Jess, to rewatch Rogue One upon completing Rebels. And that can be done off-camera if you like, unless you would want to film a rewatch, that’s entirely up to you, Jess. I’m with you on leaning towards Mon Mothma’s approach. Partly because of pragmatic concerns. If one employed the guns-a-blazing approach with zero restraint, eventually the Emperor would personally involve himself, obliterate all his enemies and be home in time for corn flakes. Other highlights of the reaction, your reaction to the new look Kallus had. I figured you’d make note of Kallus’s new look as I remember on the internet six years ago, lots of women on the internet expressed appreciation for the new look, dudes too. I loved your reaction to Ezra’s gambit of using Titus’s name backfiring. I saw him, said, “Oh, no. This Nazi-poster boy looking motherfucker’s BACK!? AGAIN!?” Thankfully, he’s gone now, Slavin, uncultured swine that he was, likewise, has been taken off the board. This reaction was amazing, Jess, thank you so much.

Always great to see Yavin, such a beautiful and nostalgic Star Wars location! Chopper not wanting his oil bath, so much like a cat! Remember R2 loving his bath in Clone Wars whilst C-3P0 was off getting tortured by Cad Bane! :D Liked the conversation with Ezra and Mon. He is naturally desperate to help his world, as is she with her's. However they aren't ready to take on the Empire head-on as was shown in the season 3 finale. In fact story-wise we can't have a victory against them for a bit to come yet, as in the opening crawl of A New Hope, it mentions that the Rebels have just won their first fight against the Empire, which was at Scarif, which is not for months to come yet. There is a lot of talk about Saw and his 'methods' here. In fact by this time, he was formally censured by the Rebel Alliance and made a pariah, they stopped having anything to do with him, which is why Cassian is tasked with capturing Jyn Erso, so that they'd have a way of going to see him in Rogue One. Speaking of Rogue One, his appearance is far more like his appearance there, only he's not been blown up yet, to have his respirator mask and cybernetic legs. I think I remember saying in the Andor episode when Luthen is speaking to Lonni, the ISB double agent who wants out; and he said that the rebellion needs heroes so to stay with him. I said that at that time, it also needed monsters like him, Gerrera and Andor (to a lesser extent). However while these people are important to get many rebel cells up and running; they won't be the ones to win this fight. It will be the heroes who do so, and these episodes show the conflict between Gerrera and Mothma's sides intensify as well as showing that the Rebel Alliance has move on from the short-termist goals of Gerrera and co; and it will be the heroes of the Spectres here, Luke, Leia, Han, Wedge and Lando etc, who will end up winning this war and defeating the Empire. Poor Hera is conflicted about whats the right thing to do. Strategically tapping into the comms tower is the best option, but destroying it sends the Empire a message. You can feel her anger brewing as she states this. She is her father's daughter and Cham would take it down. She is such a rock for our crew and the Rebellion at large; but even here she feels helpless at just the scale of the task they all have in front of them. She is usually the one with the wise words, and is so strong a leader; but there is times we see that she has a vulnerability to her, and Kanan provides her the comfort she needs to push on in this one. Brilliant character, so well-rounded. I love Chopper spinning around as they fall, sums him up! Then when they hit the dish, the technician notes the interference. Good to see the Empire still has the old CRT monitors! Chop hitting that receiver looked so sore, and even when he gets up, you can feel how sore it would be, even for a droid - I'd give him a hug but it would probably end up being the last thing I'd do! :D Poor Brom Titus, every time he runs into Ezra, its always going to end badly for him, first he was an Admiral on the gravity well ship, then he got demoted after that, so was running the scrapyard when the crew needed those Y-Wings, which ended up being destroyed, and now here as Ezra gets up to more shenanigans! Unfortunately its the last thing he'll do, as runs into Saw, who just blows him up! Onto 4x4 and Chopper looks cute in yellow, but he doesn't act cute in this episode, he is at his maniacal best in this one, the way he is guiding the tech's, slapping one of them, then going full on barbaric with the stormtroopers, and telling those techs to 'get on fucking board!!' He's some droid! :D The Death Troopers being under orders from Krennec himself, linking up with Rogue One. In one of the early episodes, which Kanan mentions here, our crew infiltrated and took down one of these kyber crystals. They are for the superweapon core of the Death Star; these crystals are what give the Death Star its destructive power. I like Ezra stating to Saw that his focus is making sure the prisoners get out first ahead of the mission, its not only the Jedi way, its how he's been raised by his parents and our crew; he's now acting selflessly showing how far he's become since the pilot episode when he was only in it for himself and stealing to survive. As for their departure, Saw says to Ezra "I hope we meet again" - they won't. He is off to Jedha to find out more about the kyber crystals the Empire is taking, which is where he is for Rogue One, and we know how that turns out for him and his crew. The explosion as the kyber crystal goes critical, looks like the Death Star explosions, nice continuity there. :) Not a spoiler Jess, but next episode is the start of one big long arc to end the series.

It is interesting that Saw mocks Mon Mothma for her idealism while respecting Ezra's. Perhaps because he's always been fond of the Jedi, who after all trained him up to start his personal war against firstly the Separatists, and now the Empire. Also Ezra is out in the field doing his part, while Gerrera feels Mon is a housecat who runs things from afar and sees things in black and white. As for not demonising Saw, that's a Filoni trait learnt under Lucas. Show and not necessarily tell. Leave it up to us to dwell on these characters and scenes. Rebels and Andor make good companion pieces indeed for the start of the Rebel Alliance, and telling the story from different points of view. Obviously Rebels got there first as it was the first Star Wars thing done under Disney's tenure, and is more along the lines of classic Star Wars; but arcs like these are where we can see a merging between the Lucas style of Star Wars, and the more le Carré style of Tony Gilroy for Andor and Rogue One. Episodes like these here could easily make it into season 2 of Andor. I'd echo your comment Thomas about Jess rewatching Rogue One if she wants to, especially with all the Star Wars she has subsequently seen since she first saw the movie. She can see it through new eyes, either off camera or with a reaction. Sexy Kallus makes his first appearance. He looks like some 70's playboy, and I love it! In all the times I've watched this series and these episodes here, I never realised that was Slavin getting killed on the Star Destroyer at the end! Ha! Good riddance!! :D

Most lovely to see Yavin 4, yes. I like how Mon mentions her home planet when explaining to Ezra why they can’t fully go against the Empire. I’m curious as to what was the straw that broke the camel’s back that led to Saw becoming persona non-grata to the alliance. I suspect his bombing the one chalet on Naboo would be a likely act that would factor into it. Recently talked with my brother on how we don’t know when Saw loses his legs and presumably at least part of his lungs, though we theorize we could see that in Andor season two. Yeah, though Luthen maintains rebels like he and Saw are necessary evils, monsters who plunge their hands into the filth so Mon and Bail’s hands are clean, he also knows that they are not the heroes; the ones who will receive the praise and adoration, nor will they be the ones to ultimately save the day. Still, at times, they are, as I say, necessary evils. As is said in True Detective, “World needs bad men. We keep the other bad men from the door.” It is a highlight how steadfast and stalwart though Hera is, she still has her vulnerabilities and times where she struggles to determine if she is doing the right thing. Lovely moment when Kanan provided the comfort she needed to push on. Good touch with the CRTs. Hugging Chopper would be a very brave act. Titus surely had incredibly rotten luck. Twas a good color on Chopper. Excellent nod to Director Krennic, my brother will be MOST pleased when he gets to that whenever he gets to Clone Wars, then this. Yes, Ezra’s concern for the prisoners is not just his Jedi training, but his parents’ influence, and the influence of the Shady Bunch, his family, and it is lovely character growth. There’s something that gets me about Saw’s farewell to Ezra. He sounds like the crazy uncle who can’t wait for the next family get-together, which as you note, will not come to pass. Nice continuity touch with the explosions.
