The show's crew seems to have realized they had little chance of topping the emotional power of the Season 2 finale, so instead they lean more on pure spectacle to make a fitting end to the season. And it completely works, with them clearly having reserved a sizable chunk of the season's budget for this battle, and while Dodonna's presence means it's clear the whole time that this group won't be wiped out, it's still a bit up in the air just who will survive, and Kallus making it out is especially a huge surprise (and may I say, that one loose bit of hair while he's captured is a lovely animation touch). It's also pretty neat to see that even before Benicio Del Toro in Last Jedi, the franchise was already giving the all-too-rare message that anyone who declares themselves "above it all" and refuses to take sides is probably just a lazy asshole who'll do whatever's easier for them, which more often than not means siding with the bad guys, and then has the nerve to act like this makes them morally superior to people who actually give a shit about something important. At least the Bendu gets a killer line to go out on.

I had that thought back when this aired of it would be a touch difficult to even match the emotional power of the Malachor two-parter that concluded season two. Thus, as you note, the show wisely doesn’t really try to and instead goes for a more action heavy approach which worked beautifully. It was a surprise to see Kallus survive the season’s end. The loose hair was a good touch. Good observations on how it explores the themes explored by Benicio’s character later that same year about those being “above it all” and refusing to take a side.
