Rogue One was newly released at this time, so this two parter was mostly designed to bridge the gap in Saw’s story and show him having degenerated in his morality and headed to Jedha having been denounced by the rest of the Alliance. And we get a pretty fun story along the way, especially with the addition of apparently the only prisoner who’s able to speak (handy way to save on the actor budget) who’s thoroughly unimpressed by the rescue, and who can blame him? This guy works much better for me than knock-off Marvin ever did with the exact same schtick. I also love that the Stormtrooper commander is made a woman just for the hell of it, and naturally a lot of fans suppose this is an early cameo by Phasma, though oddly enough Filoni has never given confirmation of that.

Yes, I loved it when we first had the Geonosis two-parter with Saw, and then this one. Made me real happy getting more of Forest as Saw. It does serve as a great bridge between Rebels and Rogue One and is a damn good story. That one prisoner was a hoot. The female stormtrooper being Phasma, I’d be fine either way on that one. If it is her, it’s a nice early appearance. If not, then it’s not. I like the idea, though.

You could always see how tight the budgets were on this show by the fact that Filoni, the supervising director and creator of this show, did VA in almost every episode of the series; so its no surprise that we only heard from a couple of prisoners when there are many of them in these episodes. Its also one of the reasons we keep going back to Lothal, so they could reuse the assets. Disney were definitely testing the waters with this and Resistance, before ploughing the money back in for the final season of Clone Wars, Bad Batch and Tales. I like to think of that Death Trooper as a kind of Phasma-lite too, she definitely sounds a lot like Gwendoline Christie.
