For anyone like me whose Star Wars fandom didn't go as far as reading the comics (I didn't even bother with the animated shows until people made a big deal about the Darksaber appearing in The Mandalorian), the reveal of Kanan's real name is a bit confusing as you just wonder why there even needed to be this kind of big reveal about it. But luckily, any background you want is easily available online these days, so that didn't last long, and I was able to find out there was a comic series about the Jedi padawan Caleb Dume going on adventures with his master during the Clone Wars, and their similar appearance caused many fans to suspect from the start of Rebels that Kanan was actually him. So this was a really big moment for them, also cleverly hidden in how unless you have subtitles on, it sounds like the wolf has just been saying "Doom." The second episode features a bit more housekeeping with Hera becoming a general, in line with a background announcement in Rogue One calling for "General Syndulla," plus her total impatience for strategy meetings seen here nicely explains why she's not present at any of them in the movie. All that and we also have time for not one but two shout outs to the single funniest moment of the whole franchise. "Had a slight weapons malfunction, but it's all right now. We're all fine here now. How are you?"

I also have not yet read the Rebels comics, though I knew the name through friends, websites, things like that. The reveal still works as it shows Kanan has been hiding himself for so long now, even from himself. The subtitles do tip their hand early. The episode does provide a good reason as to why Hera is not seen in Rogue One, even though it would make realistic sense that we would see her in the one scene especially. What really makes that moment in A New Hope was how Harrison largely came up with it himself, especially that moment where he asks the guy how he is, and then grimaces, likely thinking, “God, I’m a fucking idiot, sometimes.”

Maul mentions his name in season 3 when looking for the holocron on the Ghost, so it's seeded there for the show to return to later.
