An interesting episode is putting it mildly. A bit of a mixed bag as you said. I too have a mixed reception to the episode. To your point, this type of episode’s plot is tricky to pull off. I’m told the writers have spoken about it by saying that it was meant to be an allegory of Apartheid, which in that regard, it’s subtle compared to District 9, faint praise though that it as a goddamn sledgehammer to the face is subtle compared to that movie. This sounds like it wasn’t a popular episode amongst the cast and crew. I’m with you on not strictly speaking hating the plot of the episode, yet problems with the writing are there. One of the big ones being, as you observed, the day is saved via mansplaining, which, ...yeah, yeah, that is unfortunate. I heard Wil Wheaton felt the same way, saying that had the speech been delivered by Tasha and/or Deanna it would have been better. I don’t want to speak more about it as I’m too afraid I’ll say the wrong thing. Ultimately, yeah, not the best plotline ever, yet it feels like it could have been much worse. I will add that I share your issues of the ending where they just take the leader’s word on things, which yes, I know of your “fondness” of that Trek trope. On to the virus subplot. Great to see Beverly get that spotlight. I loved how you were critical of Picard going against doctor’s orders. Yeah, well, Picard is like me, and I KNOW Patrick brought the damned theatre mentality to those scenes. I did love Beverly being forceful though in making him go to bed. Which brings us to Geordi assuming command. I knew, Jess, you’d love that part of the episode. LeVar sold it well, the reverence Geordi has of the weight he has to carry. And Michael got a lovely moment when Worf advises Geordi, your reaction to those sweet moments being most delightful. Data came through with his following the orders to the letter. And Beverly came through with her medical skills. Reminds us how she and Bones are at the level of skill of those at the 4077th. And this episode shows that if Bones is at or superior to Hawkeye’s level, Beverly’s at or superior to Charles. This is like you said, even if the episode may not be the best, it is still most marvelous to continue in the journey through show, and to share it with you, Jess. And I am sorry about the congestion, somewhat ironic with the timing though it was considering the virus plotline. All in all, an excellent reaction, Jess, thank you.

Many, many people have commented on the story problems with this episode, including several actors who were even in open rebellion during filming. So I'll instead note that you have to pity the casting director here, tasked with finding a bunch of women over six feet tall. Naturally, acting ability wasn't going to be much of a factor under those conditions, and the results speak for themselves. I also have to point out that in the original script, Worf's line "Klingons appreciate strong women" was spoken to Data, trying to help him understand the issues involved. But for whatever reason, it got moved to him saying it while next to Tasha, giving many fans the impression that he was hitting on her.

This episode has the "I am Gene Roddenberry, and I demand to see beautiful sexy women as much as possible!" all over it. It's.... unfortunate.

I've been going through this again, and am remembering why season 1 and some of 2 have issues. A lot of episodes have good enough stories, but the execution falters especially in the second half of them. Of course with them having to hit the target of 45 minutes 30 per episode, this does leave some things feeling rushed, so the sense of resolution comes across as flat. The actors try their best, but you can see one or two of them already going through the motions.
