I'm glad you are putting out Mike Flannagan shows. I don't think Midnight Club had full reactions? I don't watch when they're released( and we miss out), but will like to catch up later.

For some reason the final scene isn’t here, so just in case, it has Pluto complete with collar walk past Leo’s body. And Flanagan has confirmed that this was meant to indicate he really did just wander out during the party, and even Leo finding his body in the last episode was one of the hallucinations. So there you go, the show doesn’t have as much animal abuse as it seemed (no such luck for the chimps, though). I’m a bit surprised you never said “Oh, he just wants to give you presents!”, and that whole sequence is another big showcase for the show’s sound design, with every squish being an essential part of putting you in the moment. Some fans argued that Leo didn’t deserve to be thrown in with his siblings, and a lot of that is just down to Rahul Kahil’s natural likability, but his totally unquestioning willingness to suckle off the opioid crisis even as he insists he had nothing to do with it definitely put him there for me, and his completely missing the car and just hitting the sidewalk was one of my biggest laughs. Another was the mockery of the notorious “enhance button,” which really solidified for me that Pym has basically the same appeal as Shades from Luke Cage: he’d be an unstoppable badass in a more realistic crime story, but has the bad luck to be stuck in a supernatural horror story instead and can only shake his head at the lunacy all around him.

The two episodes she did got viewing numbers way too low for the rest to be worth it.

Good catch with the color motif. Yes, this show is excellent of the trainwreck is coming, and you’re not emotionally saddened by what happened to the children. Traumatized, maybe, saddened, not really. This episode focuses on Napoleon, which I was informed about in advance, and I had beer ready to go if the cat violence got too bad. I even took a hearty pull right after I hit play, just to be on the safe side. You sum it up well that he’s so used to avoiding consequences that he thinks he can just buy the new cat, no one the wiser. I concur that the smarter option is just lying by saying Pluto ran off, never to return. But his ego, combined with his being a victim of drug use, but in an extreme form, such an idea would likely not occur. You also sum up well that he seems the most openly grieving of the bunch. I liked your observations on the children’s grief, or lack thereof. I was fully on board as you were for the revenge of the kitty-cat. I’m with you on living for the cat being petty as fuck. Evidence of the pettiness is leaving her prey around the house. Rahul Kahil sold Napoleon’s spiraling well. Carla, likewise, continues to be brilliant. You handled the one graphic scene with the cat well, Jess. Me, as soon as I saw him grab the cat’s head, I looked away, saying, “Nope. No. I am not looking, I am NOT FUCKING looking at the goddamn screen!” Unfortunately, my peripheral vision callously betrayed me as I caught a blurry glimpse of what happened, which upon registering the imagery, I yelled, “I HATE EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE ON THIS FUCKING PLANET SO GODDAMN MUCH RIGHT NOW!!!” Most satisfying is when Napoleon brings about his own demise through his efforts to be Ahab. A fruitless effort as “The black cat does not die. The black cat is deathless. Deathless as Evil. It is the origin of the common superstition. You know, the cat with nine lives.” And it continues a pattern of the children largely condemn themselves, Verna has minimal direct involvement in their deaths. Then to rub salt in the wound, we see Pluto reveals she’s alive and well. Other big highlights of the episode are when Roderick’s reactions to his hallucinations become more overtly dramatic causing Dupin to start yelling back, leading me to chime in, “Come now, Sirs. Are we men or are we children? Of what use are all these melodramatic gestures?” It was intriguing to see how Roderick and Dupin met, complete with Dupin showing off his deductive skills. Most fitting as his namesake is Poe’s famous detective. Yes, most fascinating seeing how Roderick essentially became the man he despised so much. Alas, not too much with Arthur this episode, though I loved Mark conveying his annoyance and frustration with the family. First, with him having to patiently explain to the Usher siblings that the enhance button isn’t real, despite its prevalence on television, that “You can zoom in, but that doesn’t actually enhance anything.” Shame Frederick isn’t present for that, as he would concur, “Arthur’s right. In The Departed, they zoom in, but all they get is pixelation.” to which, Mark would sell Arthur’s withering disdain, by saying, “For once, the little shit’s right.” Said withering disdain being most prominent when he asks Frederick to try and unlock the phone, which was a darkly humorous scene. Less humorous is Frederick spiraling from that, culminating in his desire to get higher than he got flying on the bicycle across the moon. I shared your reactions to his scenes. It is great how it’s slightly ambiguous how much of the puzzle at this point are Roderick and Madeline piecing together, and like you said, with Flanagan, you have complete faith in his storytelling that you just sit back and wait to see how it all unfolds. One thing for sure, Victorine is digging herself deep, and it appears Verna is starting to drop a little blood in the water where Tamerlane is concerned. Another marvelous reaction to this show, Jess, much appreciated.

Yeah, I found out about Flanagan confirming that with Pluto. I surmise he got a lot of shit that he decided to be open and outright say, “No cats were harmed in this show.” And I focused on that on my rewatch of this, knowing that the cats were not harmed. Doesn’t mean I have to like seeing the imagery though. In fact, with the scene with Pluto in the pool of blood with the knife, this time I did like Jess does when a snake and/or needle is on screen in that I held my hand in front of my line of sight. Later with the scene where he gets hold of the illusory cat, I looked away again, and was more successful in not seeing that HORRIFIC image. The “presents” idea you presented was my thought. My cat, Muffin, when there were mice in the house that she hunted and killed, she’d leave them in the kitchen. She displayed her kill, she presented it, offered it as tribute. I was always proud of her for it too. God, I miss her. I did hear Napoleon was the recipient of fan response saying he didn’t deserve what happened, which yes speaks to Rahul’s charm and likeability. Still, he made his own bed, now he has to sleep in it. His missing the car was hilarious, though his crashing into it would have given it a fresh coat covering up the ugly yellow of that car. But yes, a hilarious subversion of expectations. Likewise, the enhance button scene was a gut buster of a laugh. Yeah, Arthur’s got the bad luck of being in the show that he’s in. Mark is beyond fantastic in the role.

In the previous episode, I was relieved that we were at least spared the scene with the cat’s eye from the original Poe story. Then this one happened.
